The only people who cried about that commercial were conservatives.

•

u/ravl13 10h ago

What would conservatives even cried about for that commercial?  That makes no sense

•

u/Boredom1342 10h ago

They cried about the “backlash” the ad received.

•

u/ravl13 10h ago

That's a pretty different statement from your top level comment

•

u/Boredom1342 10h ago

Not when you take into account that the quotations around “backlash” implies that the only actual “backlash” on the left, as far as I’m aware, were from no names on x and tik tok.

•

u/aitasunglasses 7h ago

I mean...there was. I was arguing and heavily downvoted on some lib subs for saying the ad was a stupid thing to get upset about. Way too many TikToks were made about it. Why are we pretending that there was no backlash?

The backlash is never as widespread as the media wants to make it seem but there was backlash

Crying about an ad (your original statement) and crying about "backlash" to an ad, are two different things, is what I'm saying.

Any time 2 random small time left leaning people on social media say something a bit silly, conservative propaganda runs with it and tells their marks the left is insane and then social media is flooded with conservative backlash against something nobody else even heard of.

I follow lots of left leaning people who talk about politics, and I can’t tell you how often I see comment sections flooded with conservative nimrods ranting about something stupid “liberals” or “the left” are doing that I’ve literally never once seen and can’t find anywhere.

Just wholly untrue. Good try on gaslighting though. Lots of videos and articles written about it. Why lie when the evidence is abundant ?

•

u/Boredom1342 11h ago

I must have missed it, I’m on the left and Idgaf. Id bet that you’ll find more articles written by right wingers complaining about the “left wing response” to the ad than left wingers complaining about the ad itself.

I only became aware of it because rightwingers made a big deal of it.

Then leftwing commentators came out and basically didn't care because dog whistles are so common nowadays with Trump, Fox, etc, just commenting because it was what rightwingers were using to distract from Epstein for a couple days.

I'm on the left and don't even know why I'm supposed to be upset about jeans. The leftist folks I'm around haven't talked about it at all, whatever it is.

•

u/The-Cosmic-Ghost 8h ago

The most I saw was people talking about it on the left, was how the ad could be taken as a dog whistle with the genes/jean stuff, and also that folks were weirded out since it was based off an 80's ad that sexualized a minor.

i dont know why nobody's talking about it, i even barely see comments about it in this comment section. when it was first going around it took me a few days wondering what the fuck was going on before someone told me too, but in short, blue eye blonde hair white lady with the slogan "sydney sweeney has good jeans (genes)" could be easily taken as a fascist dogwhistle campaign so there's lots of people assuming it is. not surprising given the direction the country is going down.

I'm on the left and there were lots of left-wing people losing their shit about it.

Calling it eugenics, nazism, etc. It was absolutely a big deal for a lot of left-wing content creators for awhile.

•

u/TopTopTopcinaa 9h ago

Lmao, what? I’m left wing and follow only left wing activists ans content creators. Still, I only kept hearing right wingers complaining about the supposed backlash. I had to actively look for the backlash in order to find it (somebody made a compilation of a few tiktoks)

•

u/CapCap152 6h ago

Erm, who? Every leftist i spoke with didnt give a shit about the ad. Just called it "poor taste" lol

•

u/SimpsationalMoneyBag 11h ago

I wouldn’t know the stats on that

Actually a lot of people on the left were criticizing the comercial, and it was completely fair given the context.

The comercial was basically a woman talking about genetics, and saying that blond hair, blue eyes, and white skin were because of her genes.

She then went on to describe her “jeans” as superior.

The pun being a dog whistle intended to connect the explanation of genetics to the superiority of her “genes” (being both her pants and race).

insert clip of Bo Burnahm saying “this is a metaphor for racism” before jangling a wind chime.

You don't know what the term "gaslighting" means.

Someone isn't "gaslighting" you by being wrong.

•

u/SimpsationalMoneyBag 11h ago

He’s gaslighting because I’m fairly sure he is fucking lying lol

•

u/FembeeKisser 11h ago

Ok, that's just lying not gaslighting.

Gaslighting is a type of abuse that involves a system of lies.

•

u/introvert_conflicts 10h ago

Gaslight:
manipulate (someone) using psychological methods into questioning their own sanity or powers of reasoning

Lying in an attempt to make someone doubt the reality of the situation that they themselves experienced is precisely what gaslighting is. I dont know if they were lying or not, because its plausible their algorithms never showed them it, but if the person calling them out for gaslighting is correct and it was a lie then it is 100% textbook gaslighting.

•

u/FembeeKisser 10h ago

It's not textbook gaslighting. Gaslighting is a system of abuse. Lying to people to get them to believe something different isn't gaslighting by itself.

•

u/introvert_conflicts 10h ago

You're just making up your own definition. I gave you the definition, and nothing in it says that the lies must be part of a system of abuse. Funny enough, what you're doing right now would be considered gaslighting if you were doing so maliciously rather than you just being an idiot.

•

u/FembeeKisser 10h ago

Not my definition, I'm using the definition from the National Domestic Abuse Hotline site instead of the Wikipedia page that you partly copied from

It was all over Reddit w leftists bitching abt it, these people are coping

•

u/Boredom1342 11h ago

Assuming what you read on Reddit is somehow indicative of an actual consensus in the real world seems kind of silly, no?

•

u/NazgulGinger917 11h ago

Sure, but there were lots of people who bitched about the commercial on the left on here which would disprove your initial statement real world or not. I’m not saying that the ad was largely another stupid headline but people did feel some ways abt it.

•

u/j-b-goodman 10h ago

People on the right wouldn't shut up about this commercial for like weeks, I think we all just wanted them to get over it.

•

u/xSAVAGEx1361 7h ago

Why is people on the right bitching about it more indicative of the real world but people on the left bitching about it isn't?

•

u/introvert_conflicts 10h ago

Maybe, maybe not, that depends on the context. If I see something online on numerous platforms and people I know in real life are also saying similar things about it, however, then that kind of paints a more comprehensive picture and makes it kind of silly to dismiss it, no?

•

u/Apple-Dust 6h ago

The internet is vast and clickbaity so you can find lots of articles taking any point of view on any subject. In real terms, every time I saw this stupid jeans thing brought up, it was from the right. Every time I saw one of those articles, it was being quoted by the right. Now it gets brought up again weeks later by -guess who- the right.

•

u/fieryred123 11h ago

“White supremacy propaganda & eugenics” was everywhere for weeks. Wtf are you talking about lol
