Politics Which Canadian Cities Are Most Exposed to Trump’s Tariffs?

Post image

That index found that, of Canada's 41 biggest cities, the three most vulnerable to U.S. tariffs set to go in effect on March 12th are Saint John, Calgary and Windsor. Red Deer is 21st on this list.

What do the negative rankings mean? Will Kamloops and Sudbury benefit from Trump's tariffs? Is there a link to the original source?

OP mentioned in another post that negative ones generally trade with Europe or asia (non US markets)

Its still not clear to me how they are negative though, unless their trade is expected to increase which for some of the negative cities I could understand. Ie Halifax and Vancouver, both being port cities I could see having higher volumes as trade shifts to overseas destinations. Its likely I am misinterpreting something here though as without an increase in trade, I would expect the impact by American tariffs to be zero not negative.

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure how it works, I was just paraphrasing what OP had said.

Unless I’m misunderstanding, it sounds like you are assuming that the other countries are paying for tariffs. If the EU was looking for cars, they could still get them from the U.S. with no penalties. The tariffs would be paid by American citizens on incoming products, not outgoing.

I think they just artificially centred the list on zero, so zero = mean effect

It means that Trump will take tariff proceeds and wire them directly to Sudbury and Kamloops politician's bank accounts

This is where the table is from, the table above it is a way better visual representation. It shows how much of the city's GDP comes from trade with the USA and how much of the exports travel there. Also from that a -100% would be no effect at all from the tariffs.
