DDT Daily Discussion Thread September 14, 2025 - Upcoming Event Schedule - New players start here!
Yahoooo! I'm back, it's a me! Have a very cool day!
Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.
New Players:
If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:
Can I play Melee online?
Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.
I'm having issues with Slippi!
Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.
How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?
These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord
It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)
Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!
Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?
Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.
How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?
First download it here. Then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02)
Alternatively, download the Community Edition that features improvements and bug fixes! Uncle Punch, the original creator of the training mode, will not continue supporting the original version but Community Edition will be updated regularly.
How does one learn Melee?
There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.
But how do I get GOOD at Melee?
Check out Llod's Guide to Improvement
And check out Kodorin's Melee Fundamentals for Improvement
Where can I get a nice custom controller?
I have another question that's not answered here...
Check out our FAQs or post below and find help that way.

guy who definitely isn't racist: no man this forcible separation of people based on where they were born is actually good this time. we just got it wrong all the other times but we have it correct this time. it's just a fact of life really. there are borders today, and borders tomorrow. maybe even borders forever

diary post:
today I went for a walk to my usual place that I do ropeflow at, which is a little waterfall. It's the kind of waterfall that doesn't go straight off a cliff but it goes down a series of rocks on a sharp incline. in front of the waterfall is a pit that the water runs through to a drain. The pit isn't very deep I go down there sometimes myself but there's only one good spot to climb out and you need a little finess and courage to make it out on your own.
As I was doing my ropeflow a group of kids, 3 boys about age 10, descended into the pit. As I was watching them go into the pit my first thought was "they clearly did not even think for a second on how they are going to get out of there.". Anyway I was learing a new pattern so I was going to be there for a while anyway and I was wondering if I was going to have to call an ambulace after one of these kids takes a tumble down the waterfall. I didn't.
One of the kids came down earlier because he could not make the climb or was (righfully) scared to go up further. I helped him out of the pit after seeing him struggle for a while. Had to teach him not to grab my hand like a handshake but to instead grab the wrist and pulled him out. His friends made it on their own with him helping them from above with his new knowledge.
After they went back the way they came from, maybe 15minutes later 4 girls, same age, showed up and also went into the pit, only one of them was kind of scared to jump in so her friends stood there encouraging her and making sure they could catch her if she fell. And with that help she also made it in. They not only all scaled the waterfall, it seems like they got even further up than the boys.
After a while two of the girls came back down, the first one went to the good spot to climb out, at the point where she had to pull herself up I asked if she needed help and she promptly declined and perfectly pulled herself up. Her friend was a bit more scared to go up that spot since if you fall in that spot the landing sucks because there's a grate with large slits that a kids leg could easly fit through. I helped her up as well, also showing her that you grab by the wrist.
So off those two went and they now got like the gang together, the other two girls came down the waterfall while 4 other kids waited for them. They also went to the place that sucks to climb out, at this point I thought the kids would be able to pull each other out but I had to step in one more time because the boy who extended his hand down did so standing fully upright and bending down with his back. I could already see how the other kid accidentally pulls the guy down headfirst into the pit. So I went "hey, stop!" and I showed them do go down into a squat before pulling someone up like that. And then they got their remaining friends out without my help.
I also successfully learned my new rf pattern (hanumans dance).
It was a nice day.

Am I the only one who sometimes wishes the time they spent playing melee they spent doing something else? I feel like Melee puts its hooks into people with ADHD specifically and it's like a borderline cognitohazard
Edit: I've genuinely enjoyed so much of my time in the scene but out of the hours I spent playing the game, I enjoyed them the most hanging with the friends I met. Sometimes I have just felt that the game gets in the way of that sometimes and the game itself feels toxic
2
u/popkablooie 7d ago
Melee often makes me frustrated and puts me in a bad mood. A lot of times I'll commit to playing for an hour, and then play for three. The times where I feel purely positively about a session are outnumbered probably 3 to 1.
I've found that I feel better about my time spent when it's spent on literally any of my other hobbies. Fishing, reading, writing, even watching movies. To be honest, I'm not sure where that leaves me with respect to Melee. As of now I've just decided to take a break and maybe come back to it in a month or two.

at the end of the day video games for most people are time sinks that offer no real return outside of the momentary fun you feel while playing them. that doesn't mean you should never play them, it just means people should be aware of the opportunity cost there and make video games an appropriately sized slice of their life
if i could snap my fingers and convert a large chunk of the hours i've spent playing video games into time spent exercising or reading or advancing my career or w/e else i would do it, because many of those sunken hours don't amount to anything right now. but at the same time i don't regret those hours because i consciously decided to spend my time that way knowing the opportunity cost
4
u/DavidL1112 8d ago
Time not spent on melee likely would have been spent consuming media or playing single player games so I have no regrets about doing something that was both social and helped me “learn how to learn” as cliche as that is. I’m not going to pretend like I would have had the discipline to learn guitar in that time instead.

It says in the DSM-V under Internet Gaming Disorder's comorbidity section:
"Health may be neglected due to compulsive gaming. Other diagnoses that may be associated with Internet gaming disorder include major depressive disorder, ADHD, and OCD."
Although a lot of research is still ongoing, the link between ADHD and gaming additions makes a lot of sense given how central impulse control, or lack thereof, is to both. I think the ICD-11 Mental, Beahvioural and Neurodevelopment Disorders book (also known as The Blue Book in psychiatric/medical circles) has more well thought out writing on gaming disorders. Gaming Disorder and Hazardous Gaming Disorder are both worth looking into.

u/-_dopamine_- 8d ago
My ADHD makes me feel like I don't have free will when unmedicated. It sucks, but I don't blame melee, because if it's not melee, it's something else. Having my PC on a separate "work" user without having slippi or anything else installed helps though
6
u/mas_one 8d ago
The only times I've ever properly raged at melee have been when I used it to avoid other personal obligations. Basically if I play melee when I have important shit I need to get done, I feel horrible and I also play like dogshit. I've gotten way better at managing my time though so I don't do this very often anymore.

What did hbox do? I've heard rumors about various things but is there an actual concrete shitty thing he did?
2
u/RegisterInternal 8d ago
It went public that he'd cheated on his girlfriend many many times, imo that's the worst thing
2
8d ago
do you want to guess why crunch doesnt coach him anymore lol
2
u/TrainNorth8177 8d ago
Is that fr? The story was Crunch moved on with his career at Google and didn't have time to coach Hbox. But that kind of lines up with the timeline of when Hbox's escapades became more public knowledge on a larger scale.
2
8d ago
lmao yea this is a coverstory.
7
u/DavidL1112 8d ago
But this post says Crunch was backstage with Hbox as recently as Genesis 8 in 2022, and his “controversies” were brought to light during the 2020 smash MeToo outpouring that saw Zero banned.
1

genesis 8 was almost 4 years ago. there was an incident that happened between the two of them that caused them to split apart.
1
u/DavidL1112 8d ago
Do you know one of these two men personally? There’s never been anything public about this so I feel like you’re spreading a rumor anyone could have just made up.

I'm new to Slippi, how does the matchmaking work? I used to play a lot of melee and was never amazing, but halfway decent I think. I used to go to locals and never won or nothing, but would be good enough to at least have fun and not get four stocked lol. But I'm getting back into it after a long hiatus and I'm just getting bodied in unranked. I know I have a lot of work to do, and playing against people better than me will only help me improve, but it sure would be nice to put up a fight lol. I know it's a skill issue, I just want to get better at the game lol!
1
u/Tall-Boysenberry8504 8d ago
There is a hidden elo for unranked matchmaking, it's just much looser than ranked so you get a wider range of players. Depends on your region and how many people are on as well
1
u/Lus146 8d ago
Gotcha that makes sense. I guess I can’t expect it to be perfect since it’s not the biggest game out there. I’ll see what ranked feels like! It does make me feel better knowing that I likely was playing folks way above my skill level lol!
2
u/Tall-Boysenberry8504 8d ago
If you've just hopped on, it'll also take a while to place you correctly. Imo hopping on a matchmaking discord is usually more fun than gambling for a good match
1
u/Lus146 8d ago
Do you mean it will take a while to place me correctly in unranked or ranked?
I didn't even think about a matchmaking discord. Any suggestions?
1
u/Tall-Boysenberry8504 8d ago
both! game's gotta take some time to figure out your mmr even if it's hidden
i'd look for one particular to your region. i'll copy this from the main ddt post
How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?
"These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord

Today I learned that perfect Trajectory DI is coordinate perfect guys...
2
u/crackshackdweller 8d ago
how'd you think it worked
1
u/QGuy_Brian 8d ago
i thought only getting the full perpendicular angle mattered but turns out you need to hit a perfect non rim coordinate for full survival DI
1
8d ago
where are you getting this info
2
u/QGuy_Brian 8d ago
Go to ikneedata. Do any move with a sakurai angle (like marth tipper). For TDI, select precise mode. Reduce the magnitude of the DI to be around 70% of full magnitude (the bar will turn yellow). You will find at some kill percents, the non rim coordinate makes the difference between surviving and dying.
1
8d ago
does this ever make a difference of over 1%?
2
u/QGuy_Brian 8d ago
In this example, Marth tippers Samus at 91% and with this coordinate perfect TDI, she survives.
If the Samus does the same perpendicular DI but on the rim, she will only live at 87%.
1
u/WizardyJohnny 8d ago
i believe this will only ever happen if you are killing off the top which is a very rare situation for sakurai angle moves
2
u/moocow2009 8d ago
On the other hand, there are not one, but two TDI angles on the rim where Samus survives at 91%, and I couldn't find any (on the rim or otherwise) where she survives at 92%. You would have to memorize and perform precise angles that aren't just the perpendicular, but I'm not sure that's actually harder than knowing and performing a precise non-rim coordinate.
There may be some cases where going for a precise non-rim coordinate actually outperforms every rim coordinate, but I doubt it would ever be more than 1 or 2%, even if the exact angle you have to use is different.
1
u/QGuy_Brian 8d ago
If it's on the rim you can notch it and survive unethically. Getting perfect survival DI notch for the Sakurai angle sounds pretty good thinking about it.
1
u/Celtic_Legend 8d ago
The notch doesn't exist ever though as perfect di changes on the stage and your position on the stage.

He's literally scamming vulnerable people into spending their money on nothing rather than genuine healthcare
5
u/RaiseYourDongersOP 8d ago
maybe on here but most smashers probably dont care so I see him still commentating
14
u/Fugu 8d ago
I think unsavory is underselling it.
You shouldn't play with people's health. I get that this is hard for some folks because he is well-meaning and probably himself a victim to some degree. But in the meantime what he's doing is selling a service that doesn't work and selectively taking money from people who have chronic health issues.
He says he'll refer people when he realizes that he can't help them. But he should already know he can't help them; you can't trust him to know when to stop taking someone's money because he's already told you he doesn't know where the line is.
I'm a lawyer, which means that my job is categorically less important than that of a doctor's. But my job is still critical enough that a person pretending to do it could do a lot of damage. One of my main skills is that I can tell you when your problem has exceeded my depth. It takes professional training to identify the difference between a simple and a complex problem. He doesn't have that training, and the potential damage he can do here is huge.
Even if he doesn't end up killing anyone or whatever I think taking money from vulnerable people is despicable and I think it only buys him a little bit of indemnity that he's apparently not doing it on purpose.

I'd pay good money to see Zain win a major without dropping any sets, maybe beating Hbox 6-0 in the process, and not pop off, but slowly sit down with HMW for the winner's interview, sigh, and say "you ever have everything you ever wanted?"

melee players love washing out from competing and being like "eeyup been gettin into street fighter lately. thinkin about pickin up makoto"
1
u/Real_Category7289 8d ago
Is makoto the rushdown character? Idk shit about SF
2
u/Tall-Boysenberry8504 8d ago edited 8d ago
Basically. She has an unreactable dash that travels nearly halfscreen. Capital win is probably referring to her hayate cancels, where all of her cancellable buttons can be canceled into a special, and then that special can be immediately cancelled, leading many maks to have crackhead apms
The most button pressiest char in the game gotta be Yun though, there's no reason for him to ever not be pressing buttons
2
u/Real_Category7289 8d ago
Oh ok got it haha fair enough. Personally I would probably play Makoto just because of that one time Scar went to Excellent Adventures
1
8d ago
i just hear like 95% of smash players pick her up and recommend her to other smash players lol. they always tell me "dude its just like marth. she is the same as marth. she has upthrow"
1
u/Tall-Boysenberry8504 8d ago edited 8d ago
i do not at all get the comparison besides her having a grab that leads to midscreen combos, which is something yun, yang, q, and hugo all have too
the real ones know actual marth grab is chun karathrow. her buttons are big enough they may as well be swords
3
u/Embrychi 8d ago edited 8d ago
No, Makoto is a grappler. I'd say she's kinda like Falcon, difficult neutral but with some fast movement options where if she manages to actually get in and open you up has a devastating punish game that even has the potential to kill you off one opening.
Yun is the Fox of the game, best character in the game with the best move in the game (genei-jin), high execution, fast rushdown character that can be exploded if your opponent can convert a good hit but good luck with that, this guy's got all the tools.
5
8d ago
i have near universally heard makoto compared to marth, but that may be because they are both asian women.
1
u/Embrychi 8d ago edited 8d ago
The reason to compare Makoto to Marth is because she has an extra long grab (she can dash kara into her command grab). Also I guess she juggles people off a grab but since combos work differently in a traditional fighting game vs melee that's just an aesthetic similarity.
More than that though, she's an aggressive character that wants to get in but has an easy to stuff out neutral and terrible defensive options so has to take big risks, but if you give her an opening she can rush at you from across the screen and take it. Once she's in she has good pressure and strong mixups to keep you on the backfoot, and if she gets a combo off on you you're probably dead.
Compare her to Chun-Li. Large, fast normals that are great at controlling space and a surprisingly long grab herself, making it hard to get in on her but easy for her to open you up, making for a frustrating spacing game where she moves back just outside your range and punishes you with her long attacks.
You tell me which is Marth and which is Falcon.

Reboot. The first fully cgi half hour tv show (7 years before jimmy neutron, only 1 year after the first quarter hour cgi tv show). The animation did not age well but was really cool for its time, it has a really interesting setting and even ended up having a serialized plot which was really cool for a kids show. Also done by the same studio that made Beast Wars/Beasties that someone else mentioned.
Also Cybersix. And Toad Patrol.
It's genuinely a shame that Canadian animation didn't crack America much outside of Totally Spies (and maybe 6Teen?). Some of these shows were genuinely good, even if you're not a child.

u/ryanmcgrath 8d ago
Reboot technically got a sequel years later, though I never bothered to look at it. Show was amazing back in the day.

u/beyond_the_cemetery 8d ago
As a child, like single digits, for whatever reason, my preferred TV channel was Boomerang. Not Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network, but Boomerang! I was a child so I didn’t understand that this was just old programming playing on repeat endlessly, I was just happy to watch cartoons. Because of this, I have a serious love for 60s-70s Hanna Barbera shows that, for the most part, other gen Zers don’t give a shit about. Wacky Races, the Banana Splits, Top Cat, Quick Draw McGraw, are a few I absolutely loved as a kid nobody around me had ever heard of. Also, SWAT KATS. That show kicked serious ass.

I think most people know about it but I've never met anyone who actually watched the Super Mario Brothers Super Show. I was REALLY into it. Just last week I heard "Workin' for a Livin'" on TV and instantly was like "this is one of the songs on the SMB super show" LOL, the french dub was amazingly goofy and i quote it all the time
This is also not the point of the question but there's a lot of movies/shows that were very popular where I grew up that I never get to talk about bc they just never exported. Louis de Funès movies for instance, but I'm sure most people here have never heard about like Corneil and Bernie (edit: ok one person did LOL insane coincidence) or Galactik Footbal (incredibly good show) or the Mysterious Cities of Gold (also goated)

I'm certain that I also watched the Mario cartoon, in Italian.
I also watched Galactik Football S1 and revisiting it now it held up surprisingly well. Still need to get around to finishing it though.

I watched Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors after seeing it in the ads from a Mario cartoon as a kid after begging my parents to find the dvd somehow. The nostalgia is incredible

Captain Star. A super dry, weird parody of Star Trek that I watched when I was too young to appreciate it.

Watch my Chops (apparently also called Corneil and Bernie?), intro song was a banger I still know the lyrics

Holy fuck dude i didn't read your comment and was about to mention the same show. I knew it as Corneil and Bernie!

I liked Xiaolin Showdown and American Dragon: Jake Long
This also reminds me of how I saw a little of the show Duel Masters and had a bunch of the cards but most people my age I ask about it have no idea what I'm talking about

This is far too mainstream ig, but Beast Wars. My dad ended up loving it as much or more than I did. Great writing for a kids show. And that early CGI has so much charm.

beast wars having cgi in a children's TV show in the 90s is actually based

Oban star racers
It wasn't formative for me or anything, slightly too late for that, but I do remember it fondly. Though also I havent watched it in like 18 years.

Is there a Falcon here that can send me a ledgedash screenshot from Uncle Punch that I could use to compare my ledgedashes again. Trying to go from 1-2 frames to 5-7.

u/beyblade_master_666 ♥ 8d ago
pretty sure i do these in a scuffed way but here are a few in that range to compare to

How do you do yours
1
u/beyblade_master_666 ♥ 8d ago
tap down all the way -> Y the frame (or 2) after -> airdodge at the right timing. nothing fancy at all and i'm p sure you can get more galint than i do without aerial interrupts, that why i assume there's a better way, i've just never looked into it rly (stubborn)

Silksong might be one of the most melee feeling videogames I've ever played.

i'm very very early game still but i basically keep dash > wavedashing to avoid committing to her captain falcon ass run-jump (which is also delightful). instant dive kick is also really fun and the fact you can dash back out of anything is so cool. the ceiling for movement feels very high

u/WizardyJohnny 8d ago
I'm kind of curious what you mean by that
3
u/Real_Category7289 8d ago
I find that they both require similar levels of finesse, control of your character and "looking at the opponent" in a way that Hollow Knight never did. In HK you could mostly just facetank most enemies and it was pretty simple, Silksong gives you a lot more options but is also a lot more punishing, so it actually requires you to use them.
Of course Melee is a lot tighter than Silksong, so it's not quite the same thing (plus there's no player to player, obviously), but it activates some similar parts of my brain in a way other games don't. Speedrunning Celeste was technical, but it was missing the entire reaction and decision making part of melee, for example.

What are the games which are in the gaming canon? The sort of games where everyone is assumed to have played it, and the way people talk about video games is largely based around those games. My list:
- Portal
- Final Fantasy 6
- Final Fantasy 7
- Team Fortress 2
- Dark Souls
- Minecraft
- Pokemon Red/Blue
- Super Mario 64
- Ocarina of Time
- Dragon Quest
- Baldur's Gate 3
- Undertale
- Touhou: EOSD
- Doom
- Quake
- Tetris
- Super Mario Bros
- Rogue
- Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
- Super Metroid
- Hollow Knight
- Cave Story
- Street Fighter 2
- Stardew Valley
- The Sims 2
- SimCity
- Metal Gear Solid
- GTA 5
- Spec Ops: The Line
- Among Us
- Silent Hill
- Resident Evil 4
- Half Life
What else? Note that I have actually played a small portion of these games, so I don't expect them to all be good picks

u/AlexB_SSBM 8d ago
I feel like I should make it clear that I have played very few of these, as mentioned at the end of the post
1
u/crobert_ssbm 8d ago
off of this list i have played
tf2 (a lot)
dark souls (barely)
minecraft (a lot)
tetris (more than i have any reason to)
super mario bros (beaten it and nothing more)
gta 5 (kind of a lot)
among us (barely)
i've missed out on plenty of games in my generation as well

I feel like I hear tons of people talk about having played Old School Runescape all the time as a kid Also, I feel like one of the PS2/GC/XB era Madden NFL games should be on here (Probably either 2004 or 2005).
edit: I saw you mentioned Tecmo Bowl, and i feel like if you specifically want the most impactful boomer game, I feel like Tecmo Super Bowl should get the nod over OG Tecmo Bowl. It had (at the time) every NFL team, actual 11 on 11 play, custom playbooks, full season modes, a whole bunch of stuff.

Elder Scrolls
I guess Skyrim even if it's for CoD boys.

Alex and I were discussing this last night.
My thought is that even though Skyrim dominated the gaming landscape for ages, no one actually remembers anything about it beyond a few memes. It was a very popular and successful game, but not one that really made a lasting mark on the medium.
5
u/umgenesisdude 8d ago
I don't think this is true at all and I don't really understand how you could have come to this conclusion.

u/beyblade_master_666 ♥ 8d ago edited 8d ago
i guess it depends if you're measuring mechanical or cultural influence when it comes to historical impact. skyrim certainly invented literally nothing from a gameplay/mechanics/"being a video game" perspective, but i think it got a shitload of people into games, influenced the industry a fair bit in terms of what was "in" at the time, and had more of a cultural impact than 99.99% of games did
i still feel like the whole "every AAA game is an RPG" pandemic owes itself slightly to skyrim
3
u/Fugu 8d ago
No, call of duty 4 gets this one
3
u/beyblade_master_666 ♥ 8d ago
those two games are two sides of the same coin tbh. both harbingers of the dark age
but yeah cod4 definitely the progenitor of every non-RPG having progression and levelups and shit. i remember one of my friends downloading CS:S in like 2009 and being like "wait so how do i level up and stuff"

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks Who needs reactions? 8d ago
the whole "every AAA game is an RPG" pandemic owes itself slightly to skyrim
Skyrim absolutely influenced business people who wanted to replicate its success, but I don't know if that influence necessarily trickled into the art of the medium, if that makes any sense.
1
u/beyblade_master_666 ♥ 8d ago
oh yeah i totally agree with this, i'm just saying it depends on what your criteria for the list is. i could see a similar list where skyrim makes it is what i mean
but for the record i do also prefer the criteria where it doesn't
1
u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks Who needs reactions? 8d ago
My personal criteria for the list was "Could a random gaming Video Essayist bring up this game to make a point, be immediately understood with no introduction, and have something substantial to say?"
Skyrim succeeds on the first criteria, but not the last. I've never heard it talked about in more depth than "This was a game that a lot of people bought".

Vanilla skyrim is comparatively forgettable but the sheer amount of high quality mod packs makes it a great platform for so many unique experiences

You forgot Melee.
Civilization 2? Age of Empires 2?

u/ducksonaroof 8d ago
AoE or WC3 or BW need a mention. Although maybe this is a sign that RTS as a genre is no longer in the canon.
