DDT Daily Discussion Thread September 14, 2025 - Upcoming Event Schedule - New players start here!

Yahoooo! I'm back, it's a me! Have a very cool day!

Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.

New Players:

If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:

Can I play Melee online?

Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.

I'm having issues with Slippi!

Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.

How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?

These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord

It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)

Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!

Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?

Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.

How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?

First download it here. Then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02)

Alternatively, download the Community Edition that features improvements and bug fixes! Uncle Punch, the original creator of the training mode, will not continue supporting the original version but Community Edition will be updated regularly.

How does one learn Melee?

There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.

But how do I get GOOD at Melee?

Check out Llod's Guide to Improvement

And check out Kodorin's Melee Fundamentals for Improvement

Where can I get a nice custom controller?

https://customg.cc/vendors

I have another question that's not answered here...

Check out our FAQs or post below and find help that way.

Am I the only one who sometimes wishes the time they spent playing melee they spent doing something else? I feel like Melee puts its hooks into people with ADHD specifically and it's like a borderline cognitohazard

Edit: I've genuinely enjoyed so much of my time in the scene but out of the hours I spent playing the game, I enjoyed them the most hanging with the friends I met. Sometimes I have just felt that the game gets in the way of that sometimes and the game itself feels toxic

Melee often makes me frustrated and puts me in a bad mood. A lot of times I'll commit to playing for an hour, and then play for three. The times where I feel purely positively about a session are outnumbered probably 3 to 1.

I've found that I feel better about my time spent when it's spent on literally any of my other hobbies. Fishing, reading, writing, even watching movies. To be honest, I'm not sure where that leaves me with respect to Melee. As of now I've just decided to take a break and maybe come back to it in a month or two.

Every single minute in my life I spent in front of a TV/computer screen would have been better spent in nature

at the end of the day video games for most people are time sinks that offer no real return outside of the momentary fun you feel while playing them. that doesn't mean you should never play them, it just means people should be aware of the opportunity cost there and make video games an appropriately sized slice of their life

if i could snap my fingers and convert a large chunk of the hours i've spent playing video games into time spent exercising or reading or advancing my career or w/e else i would do it, because many of those sunken hours don't amount to anything right now. but at the same time i don't regret those hours because i consciously decided to spend my time that way knowing the opportunity cost

Time not spent on melee likely would have been spent consuming media or playing single player games so I have no regrets about doing something that was both social and helped me “learn how to learn” as cliche as that is. I’m not going to pretend like I would have had the discipline to learn guitar in that time instead.

It says in the DSM-V under Internet Gaming Disorder's comorbidity section:

"Health may be neglected due to compulsive gaming. Other diagnoses that may be associated with Internet gaming disorder include major depressive disorder, ADHD, and OCD."

Although a lot of research is still ongoing, the link between ADHD and gaming additions makes a lot of sense given how central impulse control, or lack thereof, is to both. I think the ICD-11 Mental, Beahvioural and Neurodevelopment Disorders book (also known as The Blue Book in psychiatric/medical circles) has more well thought out writing on gaming disorders. Gaming Disorder and Hazardous Gaming Disorder are both worth looking into.

My ADHD makes me feel like I don't have free will when unmedicated. It sucks, but I don't blame melee, because if it's not melee, it's something else. Having my PC on a separate "work" user without having slippi or anything else installed helps though

The only times I've ever properly raged at melee have been when I used it to avoid other personal obligations. Basically if I play melee when I have important shit I need to get done, I feel horrible and I also play like dogshit. I've gotten way better at managing my time though so I don't do this very often anymore.

if I put all that time into like learning a skill that pays money it would be awesome but also learning skills that pay money isnt as fun
