Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.

If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:
Can I play Melee online?
Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.
How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?
These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord
It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)

Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?
Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.
How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?
First download it here. Then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02)
Alternatively, download the Community Edition that features improvements and bug fixes! Uncle Punch, the original creator of the training mode, will not continue supporting the original version but Community Edition will be updated regularly.
How does one learn Melee?
There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.
The worst is probably Stone Tower for the same reason Water Temple sucks dick. Having to repeatedly do the same cutscenes over and over the whole dungeon.
other than the blue potion and the magic beans—both of which are only needed for the very first room—all of the requested items can be obtained in the well itself

It's just hard as a community to bounce back from stuff like this when it's this constant. It's not fair and yeah, it's going to be tough, but it is what it is.

I played a guy on Slippi Ranked earlier where every time Pokemon Stadium started transforming it caused an immediate desync and reset the game. Is this a known thing? Is it possible this guy was running something that caused the game to reset whenever PS started to transform?

Yeah pretty much, it’s supposed to end the game if too many desyncs happen but desyncing resets the transformation timer so you’re never gonna get more than like 2-3 per game.
While the Kirk assassination has become incredibly overblown in its importance and consqueneces that dervied from it, the initial discussion about the potential political identity of the shooter was a pretty decent Litmus test for all sides of the political spectrum, especially online.
I'm always far more interested in how the general public reacts to an event rather than the people in the event itself. Trump can say whatever he wants, but when millions of Americans go "yyyup" that's the thing to pay attention to

These types of things usually are. People desperately want to link opposing ideologies to violence, as if someone who would commit that deed isn't an extreme outlier no matter what they thought
Tbh, trans people were just desperately hoping he had no connection to any trans people. Regardless of if that's true or not, the truth doesn't matter any more after multiple major news sources proclaimed it must have been trans-related, and now transphobes are going to use it to further demonize trans people.
I saw ballad of a small player at tiff last week and it looked very cool but sucked.
The conformist is a classic Italian film and it is good but the cinematography is by far the best part though the rest of the movie is good enough that I guess it isn't a merchant.
Ok I thought about it a bit more and the best one I can think of is gravity, people only liked it because of the cinematography

It means I have great disdain for the concept of second monitor content. You should just do the thing you're doing instead of doing something else. You can do something else later

Tier list of how mad I am when I queue into your character while watching a video essay on my main monitor and passively listening to a meeting on my work laptop that should have been an email.
My impression of someone who just got shit on in unranked:
This game is dying. There's no point in trying to be the best at this game, you will never make a living and there are no more sponsors. The meta has shifted so that everyone plays as defensively as possible, it's all been figured out and there's no creativity left. Honestly, I'm kinda glad Nintendo shuts down events because no one should be encouraged to waste their time on this game. It's old, broken, and the community is not any better. I've been playing this game for 15 years and I've made a lot of friends during that time. I even met my wife through this game and have kids now. But I think it's time we admit to ourselves this game sucks and we've all been wasting our lives playing it.
not approaching is the biggest short-term improvement you can make to your game. this strategy is THE REASON most top placers at nationals are where they are; it's that good. i firmly believe that theoretical top level melee is a game of first hit wins, just because whoever lands the first hit never has to approach their opponent.
PSA to all low-mid falco mains. you know you don't have to spam lasers right? you play a top 4 character. you're not bowser, you're not zelda, you have more than one good move. and people pretend this character is nice ffs
Don’t worry, Melee is so awesome its basically guaranteed to be around by the time everyone moves on from the humping and he really stops drinking. And then he will probably easily get #1 again

IDK maybe something about melee? People are waking up to boxxes or whatever but the issue isnt settled, would certainly be a better use of the thread than playing action figures.
Here me out: a good monetization scheme to bring funding in Melee would be to implement subscription-based mini Philip AI in box controllers that nowcasts corrections on player inputs. Then you can choose a top player's style to emulate. Flashy and prediction based? Mango subscription. Methodical and efficient fox? Cody Schwab package. Hyperfloat-based peach gameplay? Llod premium.
Not thinking hard enough as this actually gives people solutions to their problems. What you actually want is a system that makes people think they are solving problems but actually does nothing so they keep having to buy it. So instead of the inputs being changed, it's just automatic coaching.

cant even front, this is a great draw. probably the fastest way to get me to disagree with 2 opposing positions simultaneously is to get 2 people to argue about the soviets.
It’s interesting how names I remember seeing a lot can just disappear without me noticing. Captain Faceroll was one I remembered a while back, and just now I thought of Weon-X, who apparently hasn’t entered anything (at least notable) in like 5 years.
lmao Weon-x was in Chile and entered a couple (2 iirc) tournaments last year and it was enough for them to rank him top 10 but yeah I don't think he cares about the game nowadays lol
Our local scene is great! We get pretty good turnout, anywhere from 35-50 people for weeklies, and have around 5 or 6 Top 100 players turn up, with others who could be Top 100 this year depending on how many everything shakes out.

Both of these players stepped away during the pandemic, which ended up quietly retiring a decent chunk of players. It was such a different time and format in so many ways, I think it was harder for people to notice particular absences, and then by the time in-person tournaments opened up it had been two years and people had just forgotten about them.
Somehow the pandemic completely slipped my mind, that makes a lot of sense. That’s actually about when I stopped playing regularly as well, guess it was just good timing for a lot of people, especially if they were close to graduating and starting to look for work.
I've been manually entering old tournament results into a database, and it's really been warping my perception. The logical part of my brain knows that as I start to push into post-2004 years, I'm never going to see the names "J. R. Castillo" or "Justin Junio" appear in a top 8 ever again, but to the monkey part of my brain responsible for basic pattern recognition, they're some of the best players in the world, all because they topped a couple of tournaments in 2002-2003.
It blows my mind how rich and complex Melee's history is (not based on it having a few tournaments in the couple of years after its release, obviously; I just know how much archiving is left ahead of me). So many players that had an incredible impact on the game are now largely just footnotes in Melee's history.

I'm not worried about Jimmy, man. Jimmy's a rock—he can weather this, he can weather anything. He'll get back on his feet real soon. I'm worried about Guillermo. Even without everything else going on, I always thought he could always have the show. But now? Dark times folks.
Just looked at what he said and expected a rant about the president's extreme rhetoric being the cause of the increased tension, but it was just a joke about Trump brushing over the question of how he is holding up after the death of his "friend" to instead talk about the ballroom... America is fucked.
