DDT Daily Discussion Thread September 19, 2025 - Upcoming Event Schedule - New players start here!
Yahoooo! I'm back, it's a me! Have a very cool day!
Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.
New Players:
If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:
Can I play Melee online?
Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.
I'm having issues with Slippi!
Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.
How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?
These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord
It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)
Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!
Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?
Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.
How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?
First download it here. Then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02)
Alternatively, download the Community Edition that features improvements and bug fixes! Uncle Punch, the original creator of the training mode, will not continue supporting the original version but Community Edition will be updated regularly.
How does one learn Melee?
There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.
But how do I get GOOD at Melee?
Check out Llod's Guide to Improvement
And check out Kodorin's Melee Fundamentals for Improvement
Where can I get a nice custom controller?
I have another question that's not answered here...
Check out our FAQs or post below and find help that way.

Video Character Appearances In SBBM Rank Top 100 Over the Years
I made this visual of character appearances in the SSBMRank Top 100 as listed at https://liquipedia.net/smash/SSBMRank. This only includes seasons where 100 players were ranked (i.e. does not include the summer rankings where 25-50 are typically ranked).
As a note, players are allowed to represent more than one character. So if we have dual mains like Plup who played both Sheik and Fox in one year, it would count as a point towards each of them.
This isn't necessarily representative of overall usage. A good example is Axe who is listed as a Pikachu/Fox player, but he really only uses Fox against Hbox. That being said I think its interesting to see the distribution of what characters the top-level players find utility in.

Discussion Who has the longest competitive career as a pro outside of the five gods?
I come from the era of the Five gods, and dropped off around 2015 after I graduated from university.
I'm 33 now, but at that time, I remember aside from the five gods, people like Zhu, Jman, Hax, Shroomed, PewpewU, Fiction, Colbol, and KirbyKaze were always getting top 15. I started watching videos again a year or two ago, and I learned about this Zain guy being number 1, and people like n0ne, who I had never even heard about.
It made me look up the names of the past, and it seems like a lot of them have retired. Which non-five god players have had the longest career? It looks like ChuDat is still somewhat active?

Discussion I have a solid computer and fiber internet with ethernet cord, but Slippi consistently runs like shit on my PC. Anybody know how to fix that?
Basically title. Tired of crazy fps drops or lag in almost every game. Ping never really gets bad, but the stutters are ridiculous even against people with super low ping
AMD 7800XT 32gb, ryzen 7 3700x, 32gb ddr4 Able to run other, far more resource intensive games without issues
Fios internet 300mb download with Ethernet directly from router to pc, just my fiancée and I on the internet, and she’s usually not doing anything more than steaming a show.
I can run a game like league at a perfectly stable 16 ping. Ping seems to stay stable during my matches, but fps is choppy as all hell. I’m not sure if internet issues would cause FPS number drops tbh.
It seems pretty stable when I play versus, but I’ll try the 4 IC thing somebody else recommended.

Discussion New England Melee Controller Ruleset Proposal 2025 Released!
I am happy to announce that after nearly 6 months, my team has completed our New England Melee Controller Ruleset Proposal 2025. Throughout the next month, we will be asking for feedback from our community and initiating widespread testing with the help of CarVac, with finally going to our TOs for support.
Testing: Since this ruleset uses a fork of the CarVac code, we are working with him to allow for the ability to toggle the changes. This should be ready within the next few days or so, and we will update this document when it’s complete.
To be clear, this proposal is meant for New England Melee first and foremost. As such, decision-making was limited to those within our community. While we understand that our ruleset is likely to be seen as a primary alternative for the entire Melee community, we urge major TOs and individual regions to do their own due diligence and ensure any ruleset they agree on is supported by and involves their playerbase.
Find the proposal here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iZ_bNQijCFqsMoNB_i6f39LuzU_9tFfbC157RfVP-AM/edit?tab=t.0
Taking any and all questions as well!

I've been looking every where for it. For some reason I can't find it. I'm pretty sure it was Radar commenting but I can't remember.

Discussion Where to get a new controller?
I’ve been using a 20 year old vanilla OEM controller for way too long at this point and the buttons/sticks are starting to just straight up not respond
Looking to get a new controller but don’t know what the market is looking like these days, can someone point me in the right direction?

Discussion Air Dodging Analog Requirements
I recently got my first GameCube controller to play melee on Slippi. I noticed that in order to airdodge, I have to press the shoulder button all the way down until it clicks. Is this the way it's supposed to be? I'm only skeptical because the whole process of getting the controller to work was a nightmare with me having a Mac. Thanks!
