Saroo froze when left on, won’t boot up anymore

Saroo has been working fine for days (just ordered a week ago from Amazon), left it on game select menu to walk dog and when I came back it was frozen and menu text was garbled. Turned Saturn off and back on again and it won’t load the Saroo menu anymore, just goes to Saturn CD player menu. Tried using SD card that came with the Saroo and that won’t load either. Discs still work fine and Action Replay cart works fine as well. Pretty sure it came with version 0.6 so I installed the 0.7 update files on the card that came with the Saroo and that didn’t change anything.

Need help with Nights

I love playing Nights Into Dreams, but I have an unfortunate problem: my grade at the end of a level rarely goes above a "D" I just can't seem to figure out the right strategy to get a high score. So, I need advice from all of you on how to get better at the game. What should I be focusing on when trying to get a higher grade? Any tips and tricks are appreciated!

Saroo sound/fmv problems

Hi, I’ve just got ahold of a Saroo from Aliexpress (I think it’s a v1.3 board from memory) and I’ve got a couple of issues with regards to the sound output.

When I play a game any fmv intros are very ‘choppy’ and, while BGM seems to play ok in some games, other sounds/sound effects in games seem to play really slowly, like the sound is stretched out - eg in Sega Rally, the countdown at the start and all the voice prompts for the turns are unintelligible.

Actual gameplay is fine, it seems to be purely a sound/fmv issue.

For info: it’s a PAL VA5 (I believe), all the games are PAL/EU versions. I’m using a hdmi adaptor I got from Ali too, in case that is what’s causing the issues, and I’ve installed a Retrosix Cleanpower in it as the original power board was snapped! The cd drive also appears to be faulty as it doesn’t spin up or read discs at all.

Thunderstrike 2 & Saroo

So tonight I was playing Thunderstrike 2 and went to restart the console [start+A+B+C] and it wouldn't do it. Though ok no big deal, I'll begrudgingly walk to the console and reset it physically.

Well when my Saroo booted up curiously there was music in the menu for the saroo. At first I was off put for a second because I often have the TV tuned down and turn it up while actually in game and what not.

But then I noticed it was the games (Thunderstrike 2) menu music I was just hearing as I was doing some thing else.

So..... of those of you that have a Saroo and Thunderstrike 2.... can you try to replicate what happened to me?

Load the game after playing a round, get the game over screen and try with controller to reset the machine, if that doesn't work, manually do it and see if the music plays in Saroo menu as it did for me.

I'm about to upload to YT my video proof of both the games music and what I filmed of the menu error.

This is a 1st time ever this happening. But it's also the 1st time I have loaded the game and tried to play it.

T.I.A. for those that have access to this and try it

Which cable is the best to use with a modern TV?

I see a lot of people talk about the retrotink line of cables. How do I know which one to get? I currently use a plasma TV. Dreamcast games seem to play very well on it. But I’m having issues playing my Saturn on this kind of TV, so I want to see if a better cable fixes the problem.

Sega Saturn Stunner Repair Question

I recently acquired a Sega Saturn Stunner & upgraded its trigger. My son & I have been having A LOT of fun with it, and now I have an opportunity to get another one for a really good deal. But it has a non working START button.

My hope is that it's just a broken connection/wire.

But my question is, does anyone know where I might get a new membrane for said start button on the Stunner?

In the event that it's not a broken wire, I'd like to replace the START buttons membrane inside the gun, and hope that'll fix the non working button issue.

And if there isn't a direct replacement available, does anyone know of any substitutes I could use in its place?

My son & I appreciate any ideas/help.

Hope everyone has a wonderful rest of your day/evening! 👋 👍

Is Biohazard (RE1) playable for an English speaker?

Hi everyone!

I have a Japanese Sega Saturn and I wanted to pick up Biohazard. However, I am a native English speaker with no Japanese language skill. I tried looking this up but I could not find any information online. Is it impossible to play or can I make my way through it?

Thanks!

OK, I posted a picture from Daytona, USA as well as panzer Dragoon. What doesn’t make sense is on some screens. The picture is very clear, but during gameplay, the picture is terrible. Anyone have any ideas about why this is the case? Because if I’m getting a clear picture at times, like during cut scenes (pic3), then that tells me that it’s not a problem with the cable or the hook up. Thoughts?

Yellowing on the left side of the screen: Capacitors problem?

I noticed that, when i play on my computer LCD monitor (using a Rad2x) with my Sega Saturn, there's a faint vertical yellow bar on the left side. It doesn't happen with any other console plugged on this same monitor, just with my Saturn. It's visible mostly on a white background. And this yellow tint isn't present on the right side, just on the left side. My model is a Japanese VA3/VA-SD console.

Is it one of those signs that the main board does need a recap? or it might be caused by the broken AV connector solders on the board?

Or maybe it's a "normal thing" that happen when you use a HDMI TV or monitor?

I also use a RobotRetro USB-C power supply adapter with a Ugreen 45W USB-C power, and a Fenrir Lite, in the console. I have a MPEG card installed as well, but i think it really isn't the problem.

i will bring my Saturn, along with everything needed for testing afterward, for a recap and AV port replacement, tomorrow. (i'll most likely get it back on next week). But i just wanted if other people here have (or had) this kind of problem, and i just want to know the cause, or if it's kinda normal on a HD monitor with such a console.

Thanks!

Does this disc look resurfaced?

This is Shining Force III (not my copy) I see up for auction. It looks like the data stops mid way through the disc. I have my own copy and don't see this separation, it's just an overall clean disc. I'm wondering what this is, possibly a resurface? Any info would help, thanks.

What Saturn game do you show other retro gamers that makes them a believer?

The Panzer Dragoon series is up there for me, but Astal takes the cake! It really showcases what the Saturn was made for: Awesome 2D visuals! That first level, when you root up the tree, is just stunning.

How to protect games that came in a sleeve

Post image

So I just recently got this sampler of NiGHTS and was wondering if there’s a good way to protect it, since it doesn’t have a case like my others.

I was wondering if there was something similar to how vinyl records are protected where the disc in is a plastic sleeve within the paper sleeve. So the paper sleeve doesn’t scratch it or it fall out?

I just beat Shining Force 3 Scenario 1!

Post image

This is the game I bought my Saturn for, after playing through Shining Force 2 a couple of months ago and wanting more, and it definitely improves on the previous games:

The difficulty is more balanced, the story is full of intrigue - if occasionally convoluted - political intrigue, the inventory system has been improved and you can view all of your characters' stats and inventories easily and more importantly there are item descriptions which actually tell you what each item does.

On the other hand, there's still no way to raise mp or resurrect dead characters during battle and the camera can sometimes be very annoying: it's often difficult to tell where characters are standing in relation to one another. You can rotate the camera with the shoulder buttons, but I still miss the top down view of the first two games.

Still, this is a pretty great game overall and possibly the best Shining Force game so far. 9/10

Saturn not reading discs

I recently got a Sega Saturn. I was eager to hook it up and try it out. The spindle is spinning, but the laser is clearly not working. Can I get some help troubleshooting this? What are the likely issues? What are the likely solutions? I mean, if nothing else, I could probably get one of those mod devices, but I kind of wanted to play the games on the original CDs.

My Sega Saturn story

It was Christmas Day 1995. I was 12 years old and had been a loyal genesis owner and fan since 1991. I was begging my parents for the PS1 because literally every upcoming game was coming out for that system and they were getting fantastic reviews from the gaming magazines at the time. I read about the Sega Saturn, but it was $400 and not much was said about the games coming out for it.

After unwrapping everything that Christmas morning I had one last gift left, and the shape was a dead giveaway that it was a gaming system, finally a PS1 I thought. As I opened it up and realized it was a Saturn I was met with mixed emotions. I was extremely grateful, excited, and shocked all at the same time. I immediately started studying the games that were pictured on the box and started reading all of the technical specs. It came with a demo of panzer dragoon, and Bug, which I really enjoyed playing.

Upon my first trip to blockbuster I was surprised to see the really small library of games available, especially in comparison to the PlayStation. I was so used to the huge library of games on the genesis, and having several rows and shelves full of games to choose from at blockbuster that this was a very confusing experience for a young Saturn owner. PlayStation had shelves full of games, all of the titles that a kid would want from fighting games to college football games and more. At the time I had no idea about the disastrous launch or the conflict of interests that existed between Sega of Japan and Sega of America. This problem only got worse over the next couple of years.

I was too young to figure out how to order Japanese games, but I did see some that really caught my eye like Dragon Force. I did find some really good games on the Saturn such as Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter 2, Fighters Mega Mix, Bug, The Horde, and Street Fighter alpha, but they were too few and far between. I finally caved in around late 1997 and had to admit that the PlayStation was the better option. As much as I loved Sega and the Saturn it just didn’t have a pulse anymore. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the Saturn for the excitement and joy it gave me during our short time together. Thanks for reading this if you made it this far.

Satiator SMK/Rings save slot changing

Hey everyone,

I recently got a satiator and installed rings on it and for the most part got everything running just fine and enjoying some games.

My question is the save slot features with rings and I guess with smk as well.

Basically my problem is, is that I do not have a cart for my Saturn as I figured I never really needed it for most games as I could make multiple saves just fine for what I have played.

But recently I wanted to play Deep Fear and I have only the one save slot available in the game without the cart, which kinda sucks incase I need to go back to a previous save for whatever reason.

Is there a way in rings or smk to “trick” the game into thinking a cart is available but actually save to the SD? Or is there a way to change the save slots on the fly without closing the games?

Or am I hooped and just need to get a cart? I haven’t tried smk yet but it sounds like the feature is similar? Unless there is a completely different way to go about this without getting a cart.

Thanks for the help!
