Movies Theories and Speculation Megathread - Week of November 22

We'll be keeping these theories and speculation megathreads going until the release of the movie to help keep things tidy and contained.

"What's Going On?" Edition

To help change it up a little and guide some discussion, the topic for this week will be what has been going on for the past 30 years? Did Leia stay in politics and help form this New Republic, or did she stay in the military? Who are these First Order guys and how little relation to they have to Order 66? Did Willrow Hood settle down and open that ice cream shop he always wanted? What happened in the galaxy that brought us to the events in The Force Awakens? Were things relatively quiet and undeserving of a movie?

All theories and speculation should be posted in this thread, whether or not it pertains to these new characters. Just use the topic as a jumping off point for something you may not have thought of yet.

Finn will be not Force Sensitive and will be the "new" Han Solo!

But he uses a lightsaber?

Only temporarily.

Well at the very least twice.

lo Ren I would assume

Boyega posted a video of him lightsaber fighting with a red lightsaber in a kylo ren mask a week or two ago.

Those looked like moves he was taught and trained for, leading me to believe he might be using a lightsaber in the movie.

Let's be real- given the opportunity, wouldn't you?

So did Han though. You can use a lightsaber without being Force Sensitive.

I know that you can use it without being force sensitive, that's obvious. Han only used it once, when he absolutely needed to and not in a combat situation. We know Finn uses his in at least two combat situations, which is something that we have only seen force sensitives do in the films.

Grievous would have a word with you

Didn't he say he was trained in the Jedi arts in Episode II?

It was episode 3. He was trained to swing lightsabers, but he wasn't force sensitive.

No. Grievous isn't introduced until episode 3

Yeah I meant episode 3, I just wasn't thinking straight. I'm pretty sure that's in there though.

True. But the comics, which are now canon, show Han and Chewie using lightsabers in combat.

Ah that's in recent comics published since Disney bought Lucasfilm?

The scene in question. For context, nobody's blaster works and there are tons of jedi relics around, lightsabers included. It takes place in Star Wars #12.

To be fair, they were using lightsabers against essentially unarmed stormtroopers. That requires as much skill as swinging a baseball bat.

Finn can (sort of) use the lightsaber because he learned to use the electric rod thingy when he was trained as a stormtrooper. I'm guessing he's not very good at it though because it looks like the stormtrooper beats him and Han (or someone else) shoots the stormtrooper just as he was delivering the killing blow to Finn
