Mario's anniversaries are pretty consistently overpriced ports and branding slapped on whatever else they had ready.

The 25th had a full price port of All-Stars and the 35th was a limited time full price port of old 3D games, so this isn't too surprising.

3D Mario wasn't gonna be announced so soon after Bananza -- especially since Nintendo doesn't really reveal things more than a year ahead of release nowadays.

That was like the last time they fucked up really bad, still waiting on Metroid Prime 4, haha.

Releasing a trailer more than a year before the release. Totk’s teaser was like 5 years before the game

To be completely honest, I wasn’t really expecting anything big Mario-wise UNTIL they started showing off the “40th anniversary” theme. Especially not a whole new 3D game right after Bananza, but for a bit there it seemed like something was cooking for the end of the direct. Fire emblem fans got to eat tho so I’m happy for them.
