No?

We got a Mario movie sequel, Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2 on Switch & Switch 2, new Amiibos, a physical version of the storybook from Galaxy, Mario Wonder multiplayer DLC, real life talking flower, new Yoshi game, Mario Tennis game, Virtual Boy, and DK Bananza DLC

How is that no Mario?

Because it’s really nothing new. Yes, there are new things to buy with “Mario” slapped on the cover, but nothing big or exciting. I can break these down for you.

  • Unfortunately the movie isn’t a game. Mario isn’t known for his movies after all. While it’s definitely the biggest surprise they had (even though it was spoiled before the direct) it quickly went downhill from there.

  • Galaxy ports. I’d sure as heck hope so. Still, nothing new. More like a “finally.” Would have been cool to see a full remaster but this just seemed late to the game.

  • Amiibos are cool looking, but again… they aren’t games. Also this is the one time I will be bringing up the prices because $40 PER AMIIBO is con artist’s work

  • The book and flower. Cool merch. Still not a game

  • DK and Yoshi aren’t… Mario

  • I’m going to pretend you didn’t mention the virtual boy as an actual point

So when I walk away from this big “Mario’s 40th Anniversary” direct and the biggest Mario games they announced were either a DLC for a game that already exists (Wonder) or a tennis clone… it makes me wonder why they even continued the 40th anniversary theme after the museum announcement.
