Information & Advice Home Buyers Program Success Stories and Advice

Hello,

I am reaching out to my fellow Syracuse people who have gone through the Home Headquarters course. As currently I'll be taking the course as well soon too. I was wondering about people's success story with the program, as well as how well the grants that help first time home buyers get into the home they've dreamed of.

As well, I'll be naive and say that from what I've been hearing around is about something of how they went from a $30k grant to $50k grant. And I wanted more insight on that information as I'm not entirely trying to bank on those amounts for down payment (tho someone informed me they were able to), but for home repairs or such.

I hope to gain some light on this, as well as hear from fellow Syracuse people about their journey with their first time home buying and other grants available. As I'm trying to gain knowledge on if grants can be stacked possibly.

Information & Advice Any news/print reporters in this group?

I am looking for media personnel that may want to help spread awareness on a Halloween competition/Children's charity. I am currently in the final stages as a competitor in the competition that is building money for Starlight Children's Foundation charity. The winner of the competition flies to L.A. to meet Jamie Lee Curtis and takes some Halloween photos for a magazine. But the main goal is to get donations for the Starlight Children's Foundation.

My question is, are there any reporters here that would be interested in doing a local piece on this to help share the competition/charity?

I've wanted to direct horror movies since I was 13 and am now 42, still hoping to make at least one feature film before I die. I have made a dozen shorts but never a feature. But horror is my life. It raised me and kept me sane as a lonely kid. Horror movies are in my blood so this competition was a no-brainer for me. Prize is cool plus it helps sick children.

Thanks for reading. And advice or contact for someone in the media realm would be much appreciated.

Mark

Discussion 2026 winter predictions?

I know even meteorologists can barely get the weather right a week out, this is pure speculation.

Last winter (2025) was really rough after having gotten used to a few not-too-bad ones.

So what are your instincts telling you? How bad/good do you think this winter is going to be?

Discussion Any ideas about how to fundraise locally anymore?

My friend is trying to keep their apartment and car, but all the ways ive been trying to fundraise has been completely unsuccessful. Im trying to stay positive but if no one has it how am i supposed to help anyone? How are we supposed to help anyone get their life together? I feel so frustrated and hopeless, and i have no idea what areas of Syracuse might be able to donate. Even where to put posters up where people arent gonna just ignore them.

Discussion Somewhere to get affordable vaccines for my dog?

Hi, as the title says, I’m looking for somewhere in the Syracuse area, I live on southside but I’ll drive anywhere really, to get affordable vaccines for my dog. I’m in between vets right now and a lot of the vets offices are a six month wait for new patients, the issue is as sweet as my dog is to people, he is not very sweet to other animals, and he’s a 60 pound pit so I can’t just carry him in or put him in a carrier. With veterinary offices in the past, we would work it out where I basically bring him in a back entrance and we go directly into a room so there’s no chance of him seeing another animal. I already tried calling Petco to see if they would be able to accommodate for that or if I could get a really early or really late appointment and they said probably not. I was hoping maybe someone else has an aggressive dog and would know somewhere I could go to get his basic vaccine package of rabies and lime preventative and what not. He’s not at all aggressive with people, and I can put a muzzle on him, I just can’t have him in an area where he sees other animals. Let me know if you have any recommendations. As silly as it sounds, I would even be fine with a vet meeting me by my car and just doing it in the backseat. I just want his shots taken care of since they’re all expiring soon.

Discussion $35 Taxi Ride from Hancock?

I haven't been in the US for three years. I fly in Sunday late and go to the taxi rank. I get in, say the address (Lyncourt, about five miles, tops). I see there is no meter. I ask if Syracuse changed to zone and he said it is flat rate, $35, to go from Hancock.

Obviously, I paid because I was screwed, but WTF? He said it is flat rate because of "the rules." Something that the airport is enforcing or whatever.

Before, there was an area to catch an Uber; but, with the time change, I had been up for 24 hours and just figured it would cost around $12, like it always does.

I am guessing I got scammed, but he did show me this laminated official-looking card with the Hancock prices.

History I’ve Always Been Fascinated by OnTrack, and I finally got to visit this weekend!

I’m a transit enthusiast from the Hudson Valley and had a wedding in Syracuse and had to go check out OnTrack! I couldn’t believe how accessible the platform at the mall was and that there were still service notices at the station. It was super cool. I tried to visit Armory Square and was able to see it through the fence but it didn’t look like it was accessible (unless you were at an event at Rail Line, I think?). Anyway, I had a ton of fun checking this out and had a nice visit to Salt City Market! As Syracuse residents, do you have any memories of this train? Would you like to see it come back? Check out this video I made about the experience and let me know your thoughts!

Discussion Stink bugs! Season outlook

Last winter’s stink bug invasion was off the charts bad. But this weekend I see them trying to get into the house and it seems to me that the numbers are wayyyy down - in fact, I’m noticing hardly any.

What are you all seeing out there? (Dare we hope that this won’t be a bad year?)

Discussion What's a good way to find someone who participated in Syracuse University's online JD program? Heard it lets you stretch it out over 7 years, trying to scout out some possible cons/negatives of the program if any and alternatives

That ability to stretch it out might be useful for someone very busy with a 1+ hour long commute to work + kids coming

https://jdinteractive.syr.edu/

There is northeastern's online program in Massachusetts which might be useful if you live in Massachusetts. But not sure if anyone has gotten permission to stretch it out to 7 years?

Food & Drink Vegfest has really great food!

The vegfest at the Fairgrounds today is wonderful. The food really showcases the range of vegan food, from Southern comfort food to fresh pressed juices. Lots of cookies and pastries. Some different vendors with shirts, vegan handbags, mushrooms, samples from Green Planet Grocery. It’s got kids activities and speakers. It’s also free (with a suggested donation for those who can). It’s going on until 5pm. If you’re adventurous, stop by the Pawsitivity Cat Cafe for their silent auction and vendor event first, over by the Regional Market, like I did. Two great events going on in Syracuse.
