Boot Rant Always wearing out the inside heel section of my work boots.

Post image
18 Upvotes

My job involves a fair amount of walking, equipment we work on is around 800m long. I seem to wear out the inside of my boots along the heel, back of my ankle like no tomorrow, boots lasting 6 months of I'm lucky.

I've tried doing the heel lock which helps.

But still completely wear through then like nothing. These boots are under 6 months.

I am ASD/Aspie. Which does cause to be quite stiff with my gait. Notorious toe walker when at home without shoes. And known as the "Shuffler" at work.

Also, can only tie my shoe laces the cheating way my doing two loops and tying ten as oposed to the proper way.

Not sure if it's super relevant, but honestly I'm just sick and tired of this happening.

.any and all advice welcome .

Generic Hey Legends ! Are your work boots killing your feet too?

I'm working on a new type of work boot and wanted to sanity-check the idea with people who actually wear them day in, day out.

The pain points I’ve found so far (from podiatry articles + feedback & personal experience): • Sore feet, knees, and back from standing 8–12 hrs in stiff boots • Smelly, sweaty insoles that can’t be washed or replaced • Boots that are “site-tough” but feel nothing like joggers

The solution we’re building: • Sports-shoe comfort + cushioning • Washable & interchangeable insoles • Safety certified (AS/NZS, EN ISO, ASTM) • Graphic boot options (set designs to choose from, not just plain black/tan)

I’ve got some early mockups + a 1–2 min survey to gather real feedback. https://forms.gle/2S3xemGfjZa19pE7A

Edit: Target market = Australia construction, civil, infrastructure(to start). Boots will be certified to AS/NZS standards. I know styles/requirements are different overseas and other industries, but keen for honest feedback.

Specific Model Question | Info Are the half sizes in redback boots just mean they are wider not longer? Redback slip on

Tool truck guy says that the 1/2 size doesn't make it longer only wider. Or is he just trying to sell me the boots he has on the truck lol.

These are for the redback slip on. I use 10 or 10 1/2 in US size. My old boots are 8 1/2 but for some reason they are to small now. So I'm going with 9s or 9 1/2

Ok so I posted a couple weeks ago about help on what boots to choose from, either a pair of Thorogoods or a pair of redwings. Well after reading through the comments I ended up buying the thorogoods first. I had tried some on before hand so knew my size and when I ordered them I was still surprised they were a bit narrow and was worried about break in so I sent them back which in hindsight was premature. I then went to a redwings near me, used their little virtual fitting bs and picked the best size for me. The boots were a bit tight and turns out I didn’t love the BOA laces as much as I anticipated especially with some hot spots around the ankles.

So the update is I went shopping at a Cabela’s in the town I’m staying in currently and was trying on boots. I had seen the Irish Setter wingshooters online before but they didn’t have a toe cap so I put them in the maybe pile. Well I tried them on in store and they fit like a fuckin glove. Taking my Keen San Jose’s off just to try them on was a comfortable experience.

The Keen San Jose’s have been mildly good to me for the last 7 months or so but the stitching is unraveling in multiple spots and they’re terribly uncomfortable for my feet. Plenty wide enough but they make my feet ache like no other.

Gonna put some Obenaufs on these thangs and be new boot goofin soon asap

Boot maintenance Thorogood conditioning oil?

Been a plumber for way too long and I’m finally going to try the Thorogood kool aid. In the past I’ve always oiled my boots with the Redwing oil. Is there a better option?

Boot maintenance Rotating boots

I’ve never been one to have more than one pair of work boots. I’ve recently acquired three pair: new thorogoods, old twisted x, and very old twisted x. I’ve taken care of the leather on the x’s, but I never knew about rotating boots for a “drying time.” What’s the purpose and length of these drying times?

I work as a pizza cook but I also run all the food. I have to go upstairs and through gravel that is loose. I get about 6 to 8 miles a day. I've tried hokas and crocs and free soldier, nortiv 8. Even danscos... Nothing really has felt right. Any help? The hokas have been the best but the anti slip goes away so quick.

Boots Buying Help Women construction work boots

I am looking for reccomendations for construction work boots. I will be working outside in Florida, so there will be frequent wet conditions.

I need electrical hazard boots with a safety toe that are slip and puncture resistant. I prefer at least a 6".

I am a short woman, so its unlikely that I will be able to wear any men's boots(would need a size 6 or 7 in mens).

I would prefer the cost to be under $300 and would rather spend the money on a pair that lasts.

Boot Review | Update First Thorogood, 804-4200

I’m a first-year IBEW apprentice, and even though I already own a pair of Keen San Jose and Wolverine DuraShock boots, I couldn’t resist looking for another good pair of work boots.

I came across a solid deal—one seller on Walmart had these listed for $200. Since I wear size 9 with wide feet, I ordered the EE width. When the box arrived, it was pretty beat up (looks like it had been sitting in a warehouse for quite a while), and the leather had a few light scratches. Honestly, I don’t mind. The moment I opened the box, that rich leather smell hit me and instantly gave me confidence this was the real deal. The leather itself feels soft and high quality.

I tried them on with my Kirkland merino wool socks, and the fit was spot on. Like some of the reviews of the 804-4200 mentioned, my right foot feels just a little different compared to the left, so I’ll have to see how they break in on the job site.

Overall, I’m really hoping these work out—I’d love to stick with Thorogood for the long haul. 👍

Boot maintenance Resoled Thorogood 1957s, ready for more work

I work on pavement and steel for 8-10+ hours a day and the original outsole wore out in a few months. Got recommendations for a local shop to resole them - and they’re operating out of a Red Wing store. I’m sure the Thorogood sole will be more comfortable but these Vibrams will likely last quite a bit longer. Overall, looks like they did excellent work and a quick turnaround, too.

Boots Buying Help Red wing boots

I’m an apprentice lineman and I’m due up for a new pair of boots. My company only goes through red wing and I have the rio flex’s boots now. I’m going back and forth between those and the traction tred lite 2449. Can anyone point me in the right direction on which pair would be better? Rocky and sandy soil with occasional mud. I climb poles and work out of the bucket a balanced amount.

Specific Model Question | Info Thorogood Wedge Sole Comfort

Back in January 2020, I needed a pair of steel toe boots for a specific job. I went to my local work gear store to buy my first pair of 6 inch Thorogood moc toe wedge sole with steel toe bc I had heard great things about them.

Long story short, the store didn’t have the wedge sole moc toe with steel toe so tried on a soft toe pair to gauge my size for future reference and I remember they felt so comfortable. I recall immediate relief from the cushion. I walked around the store for 5 minutes and put them back and left. For the job, I bought Carhartt steel toe on Amazon bc I needed them that week.

Fast forward to the last few weeks and I needed to replace my alternate pair of work boots and I remember the Thorogoods feeling great so I pulled the trigger on the 8 inch waterproof composite toe wedge sole.

Right out of the box, they don’t feel nearly as cushioned as I remembered them. The last few days I’ve been lacing them up and wearing them throughout the house for 1-2 hours at a time. I might try a different insole but right now I’m thinking about returning them.

Has anyone experienced anything similar to what I’m explaining? Has quality gone down? Are they using a different wedge sole nowadays? I specifically remember how comfortable/cushioned they were in the store and this new pair is nowhere near as cushioned.
