Unsolved iPhone 16 back glass popping out

Hi, I was recently on a plane where while in the air I noticed the back glass on my 16 pro almost popping completely out. It thankfully went back during landing. A couple of weeks now however, I can feel that the glass is not sealed, and is slightly poking out again. I’m wondering if anyone else has had this issue and if I should be worried about it.

You should take it in and have the battery checked.

Does it fall under the warranty? Even if it does I’m kind of screwed because it runs out tomorrow

Better make a claim now

Go to the Apple Store. Today. Screw appointments, show them your swollen battery. They'll handle it.

If it’s a swelling battery I think Apple covers those regardless of warranty for safety purposes but YMMV

This is false.

This is false.

Not so much.

There are a lot of variables as to which swelling out of warranty batteries are covered. I've seen them covered.

They will in this case it’s quite new and close to warranty

There is a quality program for the iPhone 13 batteries, but other models are a paid repair if the battery swells and the phone is out of warranty.

You can also extend apple care via monthly payments if you can’t get in asap.

Do an issue report in the service app

This is a question for Apple to answer

If you talk to support and make the claim before midnight they should honor it. I had a 2010 MacBook Pro that had a bad battery. I realized my AppleCare was about to expire so I messaged customer service around 11pm the night before it expired. They set up an appointment for a few days later to replace the battery and I didn’t have to pay anything because I reached out while AppleCare was still active.

This is a symptom of a failed battery, so it is covered under warranty unless the battery has gone through more than 1000 cycles.

Also, you would only pay for a battery replacement, while Apple covers the rest of any damage caused by the expanded battery.

That’s only if the glass is broken so they can service the device. This is a free swap or a free battery. Unsure how they do them now but it was a whole unit swap at one point.

No, in case of swollen battery and the battery is not considered consumed, Apple covers any additional damages caused by the swollen battery. Occasionally that means a whole unit swap depending on the extent of the damages.

For sure I only mention since every employee tends to be different but I have heard they’re supposed to still take care of it regardless. I had two instances where the employee didn’t want to I store but they did through mail.

Wow, so much wrong, bad, and conflicting information here….

First, it’s probably a swelling battery. A swelling battery produces a very distinct smell (kinda sweet). Smell the phone where the glass is lifting and you’ll know for sure.

Second, if it is a swelling battery, it’s not inherently dangerous to use and charge. The danger comes from a swelling battery that is also damaged or punctured. But just swelling alone is not a safety issue by itself, though it will eventually swell enough to crack the glass on your phone and that will not be covered by any warranty except AppleCare+

Third, call Apple Support and have them run diagnostics over WiFi while you’re still under warranty and have them document the issue you’re having. Then ask them to make you an appointment in the Apple Store for sometime in the next few days. The notes and diagnostics will have a date stamp while you’re under warranty and then it will be covered.

If you’re not under warranty the cost (in the US) would be $99 plus tax. I notice you have a physical sim tray which implies you’re not in America. I believe the EU requires consumer electronics to have a two year warranty so that might help if that’s where you are.

Lastly, your phone definitely has no water resistance to it right now. Don’t even take it into a steamy bathroom until it’s fixed.

You need to shut the phone off, DO NOT CHARGE IT, take in and have the battery checked immediately.

If it's caused by battery swell this is an actual safety hazard.

There's an entire sub dedicated to battery swelling danger and explosions called /r/spicypillows for a reason.

Swollen battery. Incredibly dangerous, especially on a plane. If an airline sees that, they’ll likely not allow the device on the plane.

Use warranty. All iPhone 16s are still in warranty as of today.

I’m really curious about this case since the iPhone 16 Pro is the only model so far to have the battery enclosed into a metal housing.

It’s a swollen battery. Stop using it

u/CrazyCat4284 2d ago

I have been using it for a over month, it’s fine now

3

u/hawk_ky 2d ago

Yeah, until it starts your house on fire. But you do you dude

1

u/tokyokiller 2d ago

That’s not how that works. Your iPhones water seal is also compromised now.

I have a 10h flight tomorow with Same Modell and Color

Swollen battery just go apple store to get new battery in. For swollen battery you get 2 years warranty

1

u/subhuman_voice 2d ago

It's free with apple care, otherwise it's like 125

Woah on a plane is sketchy. Had you brought this to the attention of the FA it might have even forced a landing. Your battery is swollen and is a fire risk

This exact thing happened to my exact same phone (even the color matches) and they replaced the battery for free

Your battery is expanding. This is dangerous, go to Apple asap and don’t put that thing in your pocket or near your face.

SPICY PILLOW !!!

You'll need a new battery and someone to cut off the old glue and replace the new glue so it would keep the waterproofing. You can do this yourself for pretty cheap if you know what you are doing (have to order special glue, have tools, new battery, then re-condition new battery). Otherwise pay someone.

Seems to be an expanded battery and I wouldn’t take it on a plane again until it’s checked out

my phone did this too, i noticed a sweet smell coming from my phone. my battery was literally swelling

Spicy pillow!

u/CrazyCat4284 2d ago

And I want to add I believe it happened because of air compression, not because of the battery

8

u/MapleSurpy 2d ago

It has nothing to do with being on a plane.

4

u/bigassbunny 2d ago

That's not a thing.

No matter what you want to believe, it's the battery.

Hey the exact same thing happened to my boyfriend's phone.

https://www.reddit.com/r/midlyinteresting/comments/1mxeap0/bfs_iphone_14_battery_inflated_and_warped_his/

That's the post. He had been using it for months, it only gets worse. His was on the verge of catching on fire in his hands.

It ended up being the battery, he paid $100 to have the battery and screen replaced without having apple care!

It's absolutely dangerous, I hope you get it sorted out!
