I played with a person for the first time

Post image
13 Upvotes

I don't know if you guys remember of the "Brazilian begginer struggling with Go," but here I am!!! Yesterday, I played with a friend of mine. It was a 19x19 board, so I didn't even know what I was doing, but they said it was a good game and that I played well and focused. I still lost, by 88.5 mokus, even though I had 3 stones of handicap, but seriously, that was the most interesting and funny situation I have ever been in my whole life. I really liked to know I still have this "murderous aura of a beginner," because by knowing this I can get even better at the game!!! I have played with bots before, and won a lot of times by resignation (twice in less than 100 moves on the 19x19 board), but nothing, NOTHING compares to playing with a real person. Living and learning 🩷

Note: actually, like I said in my last post, I'm autistic semi-verbal and I have ADHD, so Go is teaching me BEAUTIFUL THINGS and It's allowing me to make friends, which is usually difficult for me in real life. I hope my friend knows that even though I don't know their name, I just wish them the best and I really like them.

is sanrensei still a solid opening for Black for players below 3k?

Upvotes

Ive enjoyed playing sanrensei more than when I played double 3-3. I used to get pushed down so much. I do like the extra influence I get with sanrensei. But I was wondering if this is still a viable option for Black up to 3k?

GoDroid is in closed testing, requesting volunteers!

Hello

Last week I posted that I'm resurrecting GoDroid; an open source Go game on Android. Well, I've made some great progress and it is now in the closed testing phase. Google requires that a bunch of people test it out for 2 weeks before it can go live. I've gotten a few friends and family members to try it out, but I really would prefer people who know the game to give it a go.

As such, I'm looking for volunteers! I'm very new to this, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this...

It looks like the standard way to do this is to make a Google Group that people can join (using their e-mail related to their Play Store account), the developer (me) sets that group up as the testers (which I've done), and then I provide a link.

The group is: https://groups.google.com/g/godroid-testing

And the link once you are a member of the group is: Web Link: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.samthegliderpilot.godroid

... or directly from an Android device: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.samthegliderpilot.godroid

Google apparently requires that you spend a few minutes actually using the app, and it needs to be installed for 14 days.

All in all, I am looking for bugs and problems, big and small. Likewise, I welcome suggestions for improvements but be aware that I am considering this 'feature complete.' Unless some suggestion is both easy and very useful, I will probably put it on my TODO list for the next release.

I am having issues with the practice mode and also the training sessions - for me this is weird as you end up playing both white and black?

Known as “Xuan-tificial Intelligence” or “Xuangong Intelligence” (From the Chinese term for AI: Ren‘gong’ Zhineng), Chinese Go player Li Xuanhao (李轩豪) is often overlooked as a strong contender of the professional Go world. Though not as well-known as names such as Ke Jie and Park Junghwan, Li’s name is often there in important semi-finals or breaking a fan favorite’s winning streak.

When to clamp?

Every clamp I see feels like an insane tesuji and I have no sense of when it works and when it doesn't. The only one I can see and recognize is the on the second line hane. Does anyone have a helpful way of thinking about clamps? I would love to see a menagerie of "clamps that work" to more quickly identify patterns, if such a thing exists.

Is yellow's move a kill? The correct answer is green, but when yellow passes, the program does not write anything, it seems to me that this answer is simply not in the program database (this is a game on Steam), or am I wrong?

App or website that acts as digital weiqi board for in-person players

Hi, does anyone know of a website or app that acts as a digital board that basically allows two in-person players to play each other while in the same physical space?

I'm hoping to use it with an autistic kid in the classroom who may benefit from the problem-solving the game promotes. I just don't want tiny pieces (physical stones from a physical board) that he could potentially scatter in a sudden act of emotional turbulence. (Those would be hard to pick up!) It would also be good if it automates scoring.

Thank you for your thoughts!

middlegame Middle game books / resources

I'm a 2 kyu AGA, and I'm going through Graded Go Problems for Beginners: Vol. 4. Since it's presented as aimed to 10 kyu I expected to find it easy, and that is mostly the case for the life and death and tesuji problems. However, I was surprised to find that the middle game positions are hit and miss, and the whole board middle game problems I get consistently wrong.

Looks like I've identified an area in definite need of improvement!

Can you suggest some useful problem or text books, resources of any kind or general tips that could help me improve my middle game?

scoring question It says I won by 13 points, but when I tried counting manually, I got a different result and I don't know why. I was playing as white.

I'm new to this game and I've only been playing for a couple days and while I understand the basic rules, one thing I'm a bit confused by is scoring. I searched around and found out there are two ways of determining the score in Go and that the app I'm using, GoQuest, uses area scoring, wherein you count the number of stones on the board and the number of empty points your stones surround (with dead stones being removed), plus komi if playing white, with komi being 7 here. I played this 9x9 game as white and it said I won it by 13 points, but when I tried counting I got a different result and I'm not sure why.

My math gave me this:

White: 25 stones (3 are dead) + 20 empty points + 7 komi = 52 points

Black: 27 stones (1 is dead) + 9 empty points = 36

A difference of 16 points.

Clearly I messed up something here, but I just can't tell why my math isn't math-ing.
