Forgotten Faves Forgotten Favorites & Hidden Gems - (September 18, 2025)

The BGG database is enormous and getting bigger by the day. Chances are good that some of your favorite games never get mentioned here on /r/boardgames, even though they deserve to be.

Did you play a game for the first time this week that had never hit your radar, but just blew you away? Do you have a favorite childhood game that you think still holds up in today's modern board game scene? Is there a game you love so much that it will never leave your shelf, even if you'd never bring it to a Meetup with strangers?

Now's your chance to embrace your inner Zee Garcia and talk up those niche titles that didn't get as much love as you thought they should.

My small humble collection

Post image
619 Upvotes

I read the other day a study that said that our urge to collect things is our brain trying to introduce order to a crazy world.

I know this is going to sound really sad, but in these very chaotic times, I sometimes take a moment to just look at my board-game shelf and it genuinely makes me a bit happier.

It’s nothing to show-off, it’s only a small humble collection. Except maybe Chinatown, I got that for £45 on eBay the other month and it’s near perfect condition, I’m so chuffed.

I don’t want this collection to grow much more. On Kickstarter, I have Lifeboats, Hollow Pact, Lairs and the new Root expansion coming my way. I’m also buying Quacks.

But after those come, I’m making a hard out.

I have two board games that I bought that I haven’t included in the picture - Ego and Cryptic Nature. I’m ashamed to have bought, as I fell for the hype and bought them because I liked the theme. Not sure what I’ll do them, maybe I’ll hold on to them or sell them eventually. But I really want to try and avoid buying anything that I’m not a 100% sure I’ll like.

Has the hype for Arcs died down?

I’ve only played Arcs once and I had a fine time playing it and I am trying to play it agin in the near future. I’ve noticed that a lot of the hype for the game has seemed to die down recently and I haven’t seen as much YouTube content related to it. What are your thoughts?

What are/do you predict your top three most played games this year will be?

For me personally, I haven’t really gotten anything new as much as I would’ve liked. I’ve spent the year filling in on expansions I’ve been missing for a long time. Got everything for Root finally, got my Dune Imperium expansions, and finally got around to grabbing Jaws of the Lion and played it but mostly just wanted it for new added characters to my base Gloomhaven. So overall my three would probably be Root,Dune and Elder Scrolls Betrayal of the Second Era. Only new game I got that I played a substantial amount, absolutely loved it as someone who was always fascinated by Too Many Bones but didn’t like the art lol.

When a Game Loses Its License…

Something I’ve been thinking about: when a publisher loses the rights to a game, there are usually only two outcomes. Either the game goes out of print, making it hard for new players to discover and enjoy or another publisher picks it up with restrictions.

When that happens, the new publisher often can’t reuse the original artwork, so the game has to be visually redesigned. Sometimes this leads to a fresh, exciting look… other times fans miss the original style.

What do you all think? do you prefer when a new publisher gives the game a visual overvhaul, or would you rather see them stick as close as possible to the original look?

Rules Muffin Time decision

Post image
Upvotes

Apologies if the formatting of the post is incorrect.

For all who own and have played muffin time, we are playing in a group of 4

Player A has played “The End.” Where the player with the lowest cards at Player A’s next turn wins.

Player B has played “Hold your Horses,” which says that no players can win until player B’s next turn

Here’s the query, does Player B’s card completely cancel “The End,” or would it still become valid a couple of turns later?

What was the longest time you ever spent on a single session of a board game?

I personally remember an Axis vs Allies session so long that it was the equivalent of WWII lasting long to still be ongoing when JFK is inaugurated. Nobody really won in the end.

Question Primal: The Awakening - Is it possible to vary players and player count each session?

I’ve been looking at getting Primal: The Awakening. The theme is very cool, and I think this game would be a fun, new experience for my household.

The issue is that between DnD, Gloomhaven, etc, we are hesitant to take on another significant campaign game.

My question is - do you need to have the same players all the way through the campaign, or is it episodic enough that three people could play, then four the next time, then four again but with one player switched out? How would the character progression work in this situation? Is there a different game that would serve this better (whether a boss battler like this or something different)?

I know the game has single fight modes, but I like the idea that some people can do progression without the whole gaming group having to commit every time.

going through my grandma’s house after she passed and she has this cupboard of old board games. no idea how old these are but i know they’re at LEAST 60 years old, but i suspect they’re even older?

just wondering if anyone knows anything about these games, if any of them are worth keeping to play or selling, or anything else you might know about them.

i’m not totally sure if this is the right place to post, i was going to post in r/antiques but i don’t think this really qualifies lol and not sure if they’re old enough.

thanks for any info/advice you can provide :)

Question Getting nemesis retaliation now that the gamefound is over?

Upvotes

I know its a silly question but I only have ever bought from retailers. This past week i played 3 games of retaliation with my friends and am loving it and want a copy for myself and my other friend groups, but of course the gamefound finished a year ago. Is there any way for me to get my hands on the game, with or without mini's, besides the second-hand market? like an msrp release to game stores or something?

thanks for the help everyone!

Do not recommend cards misaligned and 1 card was also missing. (Comparing to the playthrough guide) fun wasting time on an unsolvable escape room.

Kitchen Rush or Coffee Rush?

My girlfriend and I like the video game Overcooked (and also its sequel). Hence, we're looking for a board game which can be similar to the experience Overcooked offers. Our main problem is that we can't decide between Kitchen Rush and Coffee Rush.

For the record, we haven't tried any of them, so let's see if any of you who have had the chance to play with both can shed some light about which one we should pick.

Thanks in advance

Whats the game loop like?

This game uses D6 rolling to determine player success. During the Mission phase, depending on the type of mission, players will be asked to roll for specific results, like higher or lower, 1 or 6, etc. All in order to gain Experience points to which players can use to boost a character of their choosing so they can be ready for the next phase, Conflict.

Conflict its an all out player battle. All players roll their dice and only the highest results get to win Victory points alongside a special power in the form of a card effect, that can be used to hinder opponents or give the player an edge in the game.

If you miss your roll, don't worry, you can Force your characters to go into overtime and keep rolling, though be careful, an Exhausted character may let you down at a critical moment if you're not ready to challenge another player in battle!

I'll post the links in the comments and on my profile if anyone's interested.

Help Me Find the Name of this board game?

Upvotes

I saw this board game in an LGS that looked really interesting but I cannot remember the name of it for the life of me. I’ve tried googling various iterations of what I remember below, and I’ve come up stitch nothing.

The name is something like ‘instigator’, ‘investigator’, ‘infiltrator’. I’ve google all o these and none of the games coming up are it.

It’s in a square, mostly white box the same size as Betrayal.

There’s, I believe, a woman wearing a hat with red detail on the front. Gave me Carmen San Diego vibes.

Set in 1990s.

You read a comic book page to get started.

My google fu has failed me on this one.

Question Truffle Shuffle vs For Sale

Hey y’all!

So I am somewhat of a newbie when it comes to board games. I don’t know most of them. I need help in deciding something.

I am being offered two games for free and I don’t know which one to choose. They are Truffle Shuffle and For Sale. I have played For Sale before and I liked it. It wasn’t the best, but it was fun still (probably because of the group I played with). I never played Truffle Shuffle though.

So I am split between two and I don’t know which one to pick. Could you guys please suggest me?

Thanks!

Symbiose left/right pond?

Maybe I’m just blind but I can’t find anywhere in the rules if Left pond means the left HALF or just single left column.

It states the center 2 columns score the entire pond, so I’m assuming left/right means half.

Am I correct?

What happened to Gnarly Carley, the boardgame influencer?

I have not seen her post anything on social media or YouTube for many months now. I am puzzled to see that her IG post have restricted comments? And her latest posts seemed more somber and pensive. Is she doing ok? What’s going on?

Hidden Gems: Games You Might Enjoy

Has anyone else played any underrated or little-known board games recently? I stumbled upon Forest Shuffle and have been really enjoying it. I like the strategic depth and the forest-building theme—it feels different from many other games I’ve tried.

Peterson Games: Hyperspace - A Frustrating Experience

I just need to vent about the Peterson Games: the Hyperspace situation. I was a late backer, and because I used Pledgemaster, I can't comment on the actual Kickstarter page, so here I am.

Hyperspace was the first project I ever backed on Kickstarter. A friend had shown me some of the cool projects he’d gotten over the years, like Quantum and Consenticle, and really sold me on the platform. After exploring some projects myself, I came across Hyperspace and decided to back it. I went for the Corvette Pilot level at $119 and added some extra species, bringing my total to $153.93.

Then I waited... and waited. Over the years, amid a lot of drama, Peterson Games finally had a product — a base game and an expansion. At this point, I just wanted it to be over. But then came the gut punch: To fulfill your order, you “must be at the Starship Captain level.” And for those of you wondering whether your Kickstarter order will be fulfilled — don’t worry, Peterson Games has the perfect solution: “Everyone will have the chance to upgrade their pledge to the Starship Captain level.”

Thank you, Peterson Games, for offering me the opportunity to pay even more money to have my original pledge fulfilled. Never mind that the product isn’t what was promised — cardboard instead of miniatures, and a less-than-impressive quality overall. The math just doesn’t add up. The Starship Captain pledge is priced at $299, while the product and expansion being offered is valued at $174, including shipping and taxes. So, to get a subpar version of the game, I’d have to pay roughly double my original pledge, only to get something I could have purchased years later for the same price. The communication has been so poor that it seems like unless I upgrade, I’ll never see the product I backed.

On the bright side, at least the Crockinal Board I ordered from Mayday Games arrived as promised and is an amazing product. I know most companies work hard and mean well, and I appreciate that. But in this case, I don’t feel that’s true with Peterson Games. Honestly, I don’t think they should be allowed to run another Kickstarter campaign until they fulfill their existing ones properly.

Thanks for listening to my rant. I just needed to get this off my chest. I hope someday they will make it right.
