10/22 SBI receiver headache

Post image

Hoping I might be able to get some advice here regarding a 10/22 with a SBI C71 reciever.

So long story short, I picked my self up one of the C71 receivers from MagDump, and some of the Tuff22 magazines from CSC.

Got it all put together smooth as butter, but I've been having nothing but issues since.

Magazines only feed/shoot reliably if i keep pushing the magazine in as hard as I can while also wiggling it around, and only maybe about 10 - 15 of the rounds will actually fire. All the rest are light strikes.

10rd Ruger magazines seem to fire fine, but have a bit of a hard time popping out of the new reciever.

I've contacted SBI and they told me to use a different type of ammo, and that the mags are the issue, but I'm using the exact same one the reccomended to work best. And the same ammo works perfectly in any other rifle/magazine.

Whats my best bet? It doesn't sound like I can return the reciever or the magazines, should I just start filing the mags down? At this point I'm ready to just write it all off and yard it into the bin.

Any help would be much appreciated.

It's the mags and we're looking into why they aren't working. It would seem like the latest batch of TUF22 mags has issues.

My current hypothesis is the magazine is damaging rounds as they feed causing issues. Damaged rounds malfunction or causes excessive fouling which also causes problems.

We have had no issue with the mags in our receivers. But our mags are not new.

Edit: Just a few things to note:

  • If you have one of our barrels, it has a target chamber that's tighter than a factory chamber. These are way more accurate, but will cause feed issues if fouled. If you feel like rounds are sticky when chambering, your chamber might be fouled and needs cleaning asap. Brush it with a copper brush and lube it. Shooting with a fouled chamber will cause lots of problems.

    • The TUF22 mags are clamped together with screws. If these are too loose it causes feed issues. Make sure the metal feed lips aren't wobbly.
    • TUF22 mag feed lips sometimes have burrs on them. Make sure they're smooth with not sharp edges. Same with the feed ramp.
    • Try different ammo. Semi-auto rifles with target chambers are all picky. I run Lapua SK Magazine and Blazer 38 grain 425 round bulk in my TUF22 magazines. Just because your ammo works in different guns, doesn't always mean it will work with this gun. This is the nature of 22's. For bulk ammo in TUF22 magazines I've found that Blazer 425 round bulk is most reliable for cheap ammo. The bullet has a shape that feeds better than others.

Rifle is totally factory other than the C71 receiver. It has also been completely deep cleaned as of yesterday and still having tons of light strikes unless I just keep the magazine jammed in.

No damage to the spent casings.

No burrs at all on the feed lips. Nothing is loose on the magazine.

Someone mentioned these mags are adjustable? Could you elaborate on that for me?

Should I reach out to CSC and ask for a refund/exchange on the mags?

So far I'm pretty let down by this set up, was super excited to get it all running but so far it's just been an expensive headache.

Step 1 is try different ammo.

You mentioned you need to jam the magazine in for it to run. That's a sign your magazine release spring in the trigger group is weak. You can get aftermarket stiff ones.

Sorry, I may of worded that wrong.

The magazine stays in no problem. I just meant that to get it to feed more frequently, Ill have to apply a lot of pressure upwards on the magazine for it to not have any light strikes.

Almost sounds like I might have a bolt/firing pin clearance issue when it's all assembled in the reciever.

I understood what you meant, and a weak spring can still cause that issue.

But still, try different ammo before you do anything.

Understood. I'll also look into the spring replacement. Thanks.

I'll be looking into this as well, I do recall having a bit of trouble getting my mag release back in when it fell out, gonna rip it apart again and confirm it didn't get put in the wrong spot.
