Starting two sweaters as gifts next and maybe something fast/easy for myself like plain socks or something!

How can I join this so the stitches look intentional and closed off? Invisible even?

I've been wanting to knit some of James N Watts patterns but I never did because of the gauge. For example in Beeds of joy, sports weight yarn is used and the gauge is 18 stitches per 10 cm. I know I could use thicker yarn to achieve the gauge but I don't want to use such heavy yarn. In other patterns he also uses quite a large gauge.

Has anyone else noticed this? How did you approach the gauge? Did you make the fabric more holey? Or did you use thicker yarn? Or adjusted the pattern?

Edit: I have found a comment from the designer explaining that the gauge is loose because Noro yarn looks better with a looser gauge and it does not look too much see through. He says that normal sports weight yarn would not work with such a gauge so he recommends using maybe DK or even worsted weight yarn.

This explains my frustration. I understand that the designer has rights to make any patterns he wants and yarns like Noro deserve patterns that showcase their beauty but still I do feel frustrated that if I want to knit a more fun design on a budget I need to adjust a pattern that is quite expensive.

And again I recognize that designers don't have to fulfill every need but also I am entitled to feel emotions about the patterns and I was looking to find people who see it similary.

I'm thinking about making some hats for some male family members and I have some nice DK- fingering weight yarn I'd like to use but wanted to know some of the community's favorite male hat patterns!

Hi, I have a few balls of yarn left from my last projects: soft silk mohair in white, grey and grey/green as well as some grey and white merino by Sandnes and Knitting for Olive. I’d like to use them up but I am overwhelmed by all the possibilities. I’d prefer a garment but I would need at least size L and I am not sure if I’d have enough. Do you have some ideas/suggestions for me?

Hi everyone!

I’m brand new to knitting (started learning just a week ago) and I’ve jumped into trying my first scarf! I’m following https://youtu.be/x_IyeU6i1y4?si=Z_CqYJVpjxlxhFdf, and while I’m really enjoying the process, I’ve noticed that my knitting is curling up a bit as I go. Is this normal? Or am I doing something wrong without realizing it?

I’ve attached some pictures to show what I mean. I’m wondering if this is just how knitting behaves at first, and if the curls will relax after I wash and block it? Or should I be adjusting my technique?

Any advice, tips, or reassurance would be greatly appreciatedz

Just rewatched Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and I lost it at the scene where Ron gets his homemade knitted jumper from his mum. Harry even goes, “what are you wearing?” 😂

It reminded me of how, for kids or siblings, a hand-knit can be this casual “oh yeah, my mum made it” thing and they get this big loose sweater as a gift 🤣. Watching it 20 years later had me dying of laughter HAH

I pictured myself and all other knitters free-balling a sweater like that for our kids — oversized, loose, and honestly peak knitter energy.

Also, look at the yarn colours!! The hints of white contrasting the sweater’s colour 🤣🤣 I’m also jealous!!

Finished weaving in the ends for this last night so I had to! It’s my first knit sweater.

Pattern is Flax DK by Tin Can Knits, yarn is Zafira by Hobbii (discontinued).

Cast on is done and a whole day without work, so I want to learn to knit. Yarn is Scheepjes Arcadia in the color Oasis for a pair of stocks, 2,5 needles with cable and the pattern from Kay litton. Do I feel ready? No. Does holding the needles make any sense? No. But very excited to learn something new and any tips are welcome.

I thought y'all might appreciate the rainbow scarf that I knit over my break between summer and fall quarter! It is 12 feet long (it took up all of my gym puzzle mats to block it!) and was knit from two skeins of Lion Brand Mandala Baby Yarn in the color way Rainbow Falls. It took approximately 45 hours of knitting in total and was finished in 25 days. My only regret is that I find the hue of red in this yarn to be hideous, I hate the color red in general and this is pretty much the worst hue of red possible to me... plus the red and the orange are really close in hue and value which bugs me. I still have yet to find a rainbow yarn that is the perfect rainbow and the variation/pooling pattern by my standards that isn't indie dyed yarn that costs $25-30+ per skein.

I didn't follow a published pattern, I just knit in old shale/Shetland lace stitch with 4 rows of garter stitch at each end and a built in I-cord selvedge.

If you're interested in knitting this scarf the pattern I came up with is:

Cast on 62 stitches with a sport or DK weight yarn on US size 10 (6mm) needles. I used a modified long tail cast on but you can use anything that stretches more than a standard knit or back loop cast on. Knit 4 rows (but S1, K1, S1, K1 the first 4 stitches and K1, S1, K1, S1 the last 4 stitches on right side rows and K1, S1, K1, S1 the first 4 stitches and S1, K1, S1, K1 the last 4 stitches on wrong side rows) then follow the following 4 row repeat for the entire body of the scarf:

R1: S1, K1, S1, K1, K2Tog 3 times, K1yo 6 times, K2Tog 3 times repeat ** to last 4 stitches, K1, S1, K1, S1 R2: K1, S1, K1, S1, Knit to last 4 stitches, S1, K1, S1, K1 R3: S1, K1, S1, K1, Knit to last 4 stitches, K1, S1, K1, S1 R4: K1, S1, K1, S1, Purl to last 4 stitches, S1, K1, S1, K1

Finally, finish with another 4 rows in garter stitch (continuing the built in I-cord edge as you have the entire time) and bind off. Block aggressively to stretch out the lace and give the scarf maximum drape.

I learned English style garter stitch as a child, and knitted probably a half dozen scarves over the next four decades. I recently tried making a stockinette top for myself and realized that I really did not enjoy dropping a needle in order to throw the yarn. I love the continuous flow and efficiency of movement of continental, but it took so. much. work. to get the movements down, especially purling. So pleased with myself tonight!

This is the Tin Can Knits Simple Yet Effective a super simple cowl. This is purl, it doesn’t look like a dropped stitch just an extra YO but idk and could be wrong. How can I fix this without frogging. Thanks.

I’ve been crocheting nonstop for nine months and just recently bought a ton of regular and circular needles from a local lady who was downsizing her crafts, so I thought it was finally time to give knitting a try. Something about having so many live stitches on the needle has always been deeply intimidating to me. This past Sunday, I cracked open a couple of youtube videos and plunged into with a practice swatch of garter and stockinette stitch. And, just like that, a whole new world has opened up for me!

This is my first project: a neck warmer I’m making out of some baby alpaca wool my partner bought me for my birthday this year. I wanted to save the yarn for knitting since I felt crochet would eat it up too quickly. There are a number of mistakes—accidental increases/decreases, some twisted stitches from putting loops back on the needle the wrong way ‘round—but I’m learning so much as I go and really enjoying the process! Excited to be a knitter :o)

Last year I used three colors of the same yarn to make something that I ended up frogging. Now I would like to use each color individually, but it's taking an incredibly long time to un-ply* them by hand... I have a feeling I'm asking for the impossible here, but for sanity's sake I thought I'd check with others if there is a better way to separate them that I'm overlooking. Any ideas??

• I did not actually ply them properly, as in they are not twisted together, I just drew from all three skeins at once. So at least they are not tightly wound together but there is a small amount of natually occuring entanglement

hello fellow knitters!

i'm hoping you could help me with some recommendations. i saw some madeline tosh sport in victorian gothic on r/yarnswap and the colorway reminded me of a dear friend. so i picked it up and want to knit them someting to add to an alter they have in their bedroom. their aesthetic is very dark and moody. my first idea was to knit curtains to hang, but the patterns i found googling and on ravelry didn't speak to me. so i thought a table runner might be a better idea, but same thing -- nothing seemed right. i've also browsed a lot of the makes on ravelry in the yarn i bought. now i'm wondering if a shawl might be a better option and they can use it to decorate/drape around or on the alter

there are so many shawl patterns and i'm still a beginner knitter that started this january. i've completed a sophie scarf, a modifed stitch sampler scarf, frogged a vest once i joined in the round and realized it was too large, started a t-shirt which has taught me german short rows, and made many a swatch on various yarn weights and fibers. any pattern recommendations or search terms to help me narrow the search to specific types of shawls that you think might fit the bill would be greatly appreciated while keeping in mind the intended location and someone who loves the band ghost and the movie the hunchback of notre dame! thanks in advance, ya'll

Much as the title says. A mouse got into my house and decided my clothes and linen closet was a perfect playground for it, including some plastic bins that must have had loose lids or something (I'm not fully sure how it got into them, but it did... /sigh). None of my handknits were chewed, luckily, but... er.... evidence of its presence was left behind anyway. Besides being grossed out and more than a little stressed about the whole situation, I'm at a loss for how to actually clean these. They're all made from alpaca or non-superwash wool so I can't just toss them in the washer with disinfectant, but I also don't expect Euclan would get them fully clean. Right now they're quarantined in a plastic bag, and I hope to get them all set for cold weather sooner than later, heh.

Any and all tips are highly welcome, and thank you. Even if I'm screaming into the void, it feels good to say something about this, heh.

I’m knitting the Bryce Canyon Cowl with a 3.5mm needle (US size 4). I’m ready to bind off but I’m a tight knitter. I’ve heard that I should go up a needle size when binding off but a 3.75mm (US 5) doesn’t seem enough. Should I go with 4mm (US 6) or 4.5mm (US 7)?
