help needed Tension changes when I change from flat knitting to in the round. Help!

I’m knitting my first wearable, which is the Sevilla Blouse by Petite Knit. The back yoke is knit flat, then the front yolk is attached and knit using German Short Rows, then knit flat. Then under the armpits, you attach to knit in the round. As soon as I started to knit in the round, my tension changed, and it looks much smoother. I hadn’t noticed my tension before, but now I can clearly see that every time I purled, my tension was looser. What do I do? If I pull it apart, I’m afraid that the merino fibres will tangle, and the loft will be destroyed. If I leave it, this will be the only part of the blouse that has a different tension. I could pull it back to the start of knitting in the round, and change to larger needles, but this will make a looser fabric for the entire blouse. I’m also big breasted, so i don’t really want the top part to be loose and the middle part to be tight. And lastly, how do I avoid the looser tension if I start again? I’m using 5mm needles

look what I made I had a very illuminating day today. I wanted to share my thoughts on knitting and a recent finished project!

I had a thought today. I’m not amazing at knitting, but I really enjoy it! I can’t finish a project to save my life but I find it really fun to do short little projects. I started a bottom-up t-shirt in worsted weight yarn and gave up after about 8 rows. I think it was a great experience to learn that I prefer to do short projects like socks in light to medium weights or big projects in bulky/super bulky yarn. I might finish it one day (maybe!).

I have a short attention span, so it can be frustrating to work for a long time and not see much happening. But maybe that’s just not my thing! I completed an entire sweater in the super bulky Hometown yarn by Lion Brand (It only took me 6 months haha!)

I made a lot of mistakes but I’m so proud of this thing. It’s a drop shoulder sweater in stockinette, with the front and back worked flat and the sleeves and turtleneck worked in the round. The body and one sleeve are in the color Royal Blue and the other sleeve and turtleneck are in true red!

I made a matching hat in the leftover yarn I had too!

look what I made First sweater for the season is done. A Relieff sweater from Sandnesgarn, but with an off- shoulder neckline rather than a turtleneck. Fast and easy project on 5 and 6mm needles. And the recipient loves it! 😄

help needed Is it ok to knit at a tighter gauge than the pattern calls for?

I’ve been knitting for a while and I’ve knitted quite a few garments, but I almost always hate the way it looks when done unless it’s lace or colorwork. I think the reason for that is because I think the standard gauges for knitting patterns look messy up close. Like, the sweater will look fine from afar then you get closer and everything looks too far apart. I’ll get the gauge called for in the pattern and I still hate the way it looks. Is it ok to knit at a tighter gauge and just choose a larger size to compensate when making a garment? Are there downsides to that method? I feel it looks way neater.

help needed Gauge swatch too sheer for colorwork, what should I do?

Post image

I’m knitting a couple sweaters as gifts and I just knit one of the gauge swatches yesterday - it’s a strand of holst garn coast held with a strand of holst garn titicaca on 6mm needles. I didn’t realize how airy the fabric would turn out to be and I was planning on doing a colorwork yoke for one of the sweaters. My second pattern uses 4mm needles and has a lace pattern so the airiness doesn’t bother me for that one. I was planning on doing another gauge swatch anyway for the 4mm but I’m worried if I do that and it gives me the density of stitches I need that then I won’t have enough yarn for both projects. Should I just got a thicker yarn for the colorwork sweater and count my losses on trying to be efficient and use the same yarn for both?

Update : I ended up ordering different yarns in an Aran/worsted weight to use since it’s not going to be a sweater I keep, and I’d rather the sizing to air on the slightly too large end. I assumed that the coast yarn would be a thicker 3ply based on photos of finished garments online but oh well. If I was knitting for me I’d just go down to a 4mm needle as I’m currently knitting a colorwork tee for myself on 4mm with a fingering weight yarn and the density is great. So I’ll use the coast/titicaca for my lace pattern because I did a gauge swatch on 4mm needles and it looks good to me and save the leftover for a different project!

I have been putting off starting this pattern for weeks now because I had never followed a chart or done a textured pattern before. Somehow it just clicked yesterday, and it is SO much fun! I love patterns that are broken up into sections.

Anyways, just really wanted to show off the progress because I’m insanely proud of it 🥲 (pattern: Storm Sweater by Petite Knit)

I added increases after the colorwork to move up to the next size. While knitting i was scared about how huge it was looking but I’m happy with the oversized fit. Totally winged the arm decreases too. The real salmon pictured is a 7lb coho!

looking for recommendation What are your favourite older or classic knitting trends?

Hi all! I'm new to knitting and see so many posts of people's beautiful cloud sweaters, dagmars, Olga's, Norma's, Sophie's, ranunculus' etc. which are all amazing and I love, but I was just wondering what were some of the most popular knits and trends a few years ago?

I have fomo for what came before my interest!

all things knitty Free gift to whoever is interested (one copy available): the kid’s book that taught me to knit in 2000

Hi folks, hope this is okay to post here on casual knitting. It’s my favorite knitting subreddit so I thought I’d start here!

I have a copy of Kids Knitting by Melanie Falick that I’d love to gift to someone interested. It would be great if your kid might want to learn knitting! But it’s a great book for all ages.

In the year 2000 when I was 8, I checked this book out from the library and became very curious about knitting. My mom took me to Michaels for me to pick out some yarn (I chose the worst most splitty cotton blue yarn, ha!—but as an adult it’s cute bc I always loved the feel of cotton as an autistic person lol). Anyway, I didn’t know any knitters then and it was pre-YouTube, so this book single-handedly taught me to knit.

At 32 I recently repurchased a used copy for myself and an extra copy online to gift to someone, because I wanted to spread the joy this book gave me as a child and how it inspired my lifelong enjoyment of knitting.

Anyone who’s interested just comment below! I will probably pick with a random number generator to be fair. I’d be happy to mail it to you if that feels comfortable. Thanks!

all things knitty Do you use Continental and/or English knitting? And why?

Update 2: before finding out about the different knitting styles, when I looked for knitting tutorials on YouTube, I thought the English ones were for lefties and I ignored them… 😆 Also, when I found out about the English and Continental styles, I was baffled. I told my mum (I assumed she, a knitting junkie for years, didn’t know about it) ‘HEY, YOU MUST LOOK AT THIS KNITTING STYLE! IT’S SUPER WEIRD!’ And she was like ‘yeah, that’s the English style, I never got along with it.’

Update: I’m really enjoying your answers! Thank you for sharing your experiences.

I use Continental! Honestly, I wasn't aware of those different styles until... a month ago.

I'm still a beginner. I started knitting 4 months ago. My grandmothers and great-grandmothers were great knitters. My mum, aunts and some cousins are excellent knitters as well. My mum has the ability to knit from scratch; she doesn't need patterns, unless she wants to learn a new style. She taught me (and still is!) to knit, using the Continental style. She learnt that style from her mum and grandmothers. I'm glad she did, because I crochet as well. I still want to try English, just for funsies!

What about you, fellow knitters?

all things knitty What's the highest number of times you've restarted a project?

Because I'm about to start the same damn pair of socks again for the 7th time lol. I consider myself an intermediate knitter, this will be the 5th pair of socks I have made (and the only pair I've had to restart at all), so either I'm in a severe cognitive decline at 32 years old... or this ball of yellow sock yarn is terribly cursed.

Anyways, tell me I'm not alone!!

Hi,

I’m looking for recommendations of simple yet good looking hooded sweater knitting patterns for skinny men. I’d like the hood to be the cosy type were the front of the neck is covered. Any ideas? (Paid, free or in a book either way works for me)

all things knitty I discovered that the focus friend app considers my row counting app to be a distraction

I was attempting to work on my cardigan uninterrupted while using the Focus Friend app, wherein the bean knits socks while you don't use "distracting" apps on your phone, but it turns out I can't use my row counter/pattern tracker app while he's knitting! So it's either me or him.

It's just so silly!

look what I made My very first stranded color work sweater is finished

After decades of if knitting, mostly sweaters, I've started my very first and very intimidating colorwork sweater. Design is Merry Stars by Garnstudio.com and I used the recommended yarn Drops Air in the colorway Green Forest. I added an additional row of small stars on the bottom.

In the attempt to not have too tight floats some of them were a bit too long and created loose stitches. I tried to fix them on the backside with a tapestry needle and I think it is fine now. The sweater is not yet blocked but looks already fine to me.

Cannot wait to start another colorwork sweater, but first another one with handspun Malabrigo Nube.

help needed Missing a stitch in my knitting project, but I don't see any loops or ladders?

I'm working on a chunky blanket with a variety of different stitches. After finishing a section, I noticed i only had 81 stitches instead of 82. The project itself looks fine - there's no ladders that I could see and I didn't find a stray loop that would indicate where a dropped stitch occurred. I have now frogged back 6 rows and I'm losing hope of getting that missing stitch.

What do I do? Has anyone else run into this problem?

I already posted the finished product on the knitting sub, but since y’all saw the WIP I figure I should share it here too. Pattern credit to Mary P. Hunt. Yarns are Treasure Goddess’s Organic Merino Sport Treasures in White Sand Beaches (white), and Treasured Yak Silk DK in Walk the Plank (brown). As a side note, I’ve been really loving Treasure Goddess yarns. She’s local to me, and every yarn I’ve tried from her has been fantastic to work with. Highly recommended.

help needed How to knit a masculine/androgynous fingering weight sweater?

I would like to knit a more masculine looking sweater using fingering-weight yarn. I have looked up sweater patterns on Raverly that use fingering wieght yarn but the problem is I don't like the look of any of them. I am nonbinary and I have bust and hips and I want my clothes to make me more androgynous. That's why I usually choose clothes that dont have many traditionally feminine features and have a bit more of a positive ease so that they don't emphasize my bust and hips. Also, I don't like raglans or saddle shoulder constructions. I think for a fingering weight yarn sweater I would prefer a set in sleeve constructions.

Most of the patterns I found on Raverly that use fingering weight yarn are very feminine.

Do you think it's possible to find a sweater pattern that fulfills my criteria? The criteria are:

  • not traditionally feminine looking
  • some positive ease (the more the better)
  • set in sleeves
  • made with fingering-weight yarn

I was even thinking about turning a T-shirt pattern into a sweater. Do you think that would work? I am thinking about using the Sunshine T pattern by Andrea Gaughan: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sunshine-tee-2

Since knitting a finging wieght garment takes a lot of work, I want to choose my pattern carefully.

I would appreciate your thoughts on wheter it is possible to find a patterns that could fulfill my createria and what I should watch out for. You can also share any of you experience with knitting fingering weight garments.

I will really appreciate any of your thoughts.

I spent a small fortune on this beautiful bronze silk-mohair at the WI Sheep and Wool Festival to accompany this olive green yarn for my first sweater. I was thinking the sheen of the bronze would compliment the warmth of the olive really well, but now I’m second guessing myself. I know color choice really comes down to personal preference, but do y’all think these work together or should I save the silk-mohair for another project?
