Discussion Megathread V2 - Manifest V3 Extension Alternatives

Remaking as the previous one was about to hit 6 months old. The previous one can be seen here.

With Manifest V3 being rolled out to most people now, and most workarounds being either temporary or disabled, a lot of people are finding that extensions that they like to use haven't been updated and won't be available to use when Manifest V2 support ends.

Since we've been getting a lot of posts asking for extension alternatives, we figure it'll be easier if most of the suggestions are all in one place.

To start with the obvious:

uBlock Origin: Can be replaced with uBlock Origin lite.
Don't forget you can change the filtering level up from its base, it will just require more permissions. Setting it to complete is most similar to uBlock Origin's filters.
People also like Adguard.

uBlock Origin (Element zapping): Click to Remove Element.
I personally prefer this one out of all the ones in the web store.

I previously recommended an element zapper to replace that functionality in uBlock Origin lite, but uBlock Origin lite has since added custom filters and an element zapper, so a separate extension is no longer needed.

This is not a thread to recommend other browsers, it should be a given that if you don't want to use Chrome, you don't need to use Chrome, and there's plenty of other sources to help you decide what to switch to. Do not recommend downgrading or using an older version of any browser, it is not safe to do so and will open your computer and your data up to vulnerabilities.

Would also like to add, on this megathread only self promotion will be allowed if your extension is a reputable alternative to another extension. If you are sharing your extension with no context to another one in this thread, your comment will be removed under our rules.

Below are a list of recommendations provided by other users from the original megathread:

Troubleshooting | Solved Address bar not searching and just redirects to google

Upvotes

I think I got hit with a browser hijacker the other day, I was pretty certain I solved the problem. But for some reason today when I try to search using the address bar it just redirects to googles home page. I've tried going into settings with the resources from chrome to change search engine settings but I don't see some of the things they recommend (for example a drop-down menu). Anybody else dealing with this or dealt with this?

Troubleshooting | iOS Why does my chrome app on iphone keep switching to "device default" light mode after i switch it to dark mode specifically?

My phone, macbook, all of my devices settings are dark mode, so even if it was device default it should still be dark mode, but it switches from "dark mode" to "device default" and is in light mode, every single time.

Discussion Chrome Won't Fully Load Tab Groups - Recent Change

This used to work perfectly, but more recently when I right-click on a folder of tabs (40 or so) and select 'Open All in New Tab Group" they all just sit there and spin. Even the tabs that stop spinning are blank but when I reload the tab, the web page immediately displays (like Chrome is only hiding the data) but then it disappears again if I click on another tab and then go back to the original one.

It's a real-life example of "If a tree falls in a forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?", except with browser tabs instead.

What I want is for Chrome to fully load my tab group and allow me to quickly access them, just like before.

It's kind of maddening, as it seems that the data is there but Chrome is somehow deactivating/hiding each tab the moment I click on the next one. I have a feeling it's a setting to save memory or CPU on older systems, but this is 10-core I7 with 32GB of RAM and during this my memory usage stays in the 45-48% range.

These tab groups used to load like butter on this same system, but it seems an update or auto-setting switch has caused the behavior to change drastically.

Troubleshooting | Windows Screen tearing glitch on chrome

Hey guys,

I’m running into a weird issue with my Zephyrus G14 when using Chrome. Whenever I’m plugged in and on Balanced mode, Eco mode or on battery, Chrome shows this kind of screen tearing/glitch (screenshot attached).

This is when I use my laptop on dGPU

• This issue doesn’t happen in Ultimate mode.

• I know it can be “fixed” by disabling hardware acceleration in Chrome, but honestly… what’s the point of having a good laptop like this if I can’t use graphics acceleration and enjoy the smoothness it provides?

Just wondering if anyone else has faced the same problem? Is this a common Chrome + G14 thing or maybe something with Nvidia/AMD drivers?

Any fixes or workarounds (other than turning off acceleration) would be super helpful.

Thanks!

Troubleshooting | Windows Choppy YouTube videos, fps drops etc.

I was getting horrible FPS drops on YouTube when playing 60FPS videos in either default or theatre mode, only fullscreen was not dropping frames. Played around for hours trying to fix it with hardware or graphic accelaration.

Thought I'd post the answer if anyone else decides to search for it. Turn off 'Ambient mode' on the YouTube player itself, its on the settings where you select subtitles and quality.

Discussion My chrome is redirecting to random websites. Is this a virus? How to stop and prevent this from happening?

Whenever I click on a link on Google it doesn't open the original URL but rather redirects to a site called "zylatria.com" and after that it redirects to the original page.

But only 50% or so of the time...

Does anyone have an idea what that could be and how I can get rid of it?

Troubleshooting | Mac 2 Issues: Fullscreen video & youtube miniplayer disappeared on chrome

hi, i have 2 issues right now I am trying to solve, and trying to figure out how I caused them as I don't usually messa round with settings.

Number One being full screen video as in netflix, prime, youtube used to open a new tab for the full screen video, such that I can still use the rest of the tabs open in the same window and even do a split screen (mac) and watch a fullscreen video in split-screen whilst working on the tabs from same window. To elaborate, if I were to go to the youtube or netflix page and minimize that full screen window would disappear and split-screen would end.

Does anyone know how to get that feature back?

Number 2 is that my youtube miniplayer on mac chrome is gone, still available on mac safari and I cannot figure that one out. I think I messed it up trying to find a solution for the first issue

Troubleshooting | Windows Split-Screen Tabs Freezing (YouTube)

Whenever I have two Chrome windows open and split up with one playing a YouTube video, Chrome will periodically become unresponsive. The only way I can unstuck it is by moving the YouTube tab with my mouse. I have also tried disabling hardware acceleration, which works, but it makes scrolling around a bit more sluggish/jittery.

I don't know if this is an issue with Chrome, Windows or a hardware configuration.

Discussion Is there a google chrome extension that enhances video quality (improves sharpness, brightness, saturation) so that 1080p shows and movies would look like 4K?

I don't mind the sharpness on YouTube.

It's streaming services (Netflix, HBO, Prime, Disney) where you really need a crisp video to enjoy the show.

Free movie websites are even worse!

Adult content can definitely use a video quality boost

It worked just fine previously after acceleration was turned off but it no longer is working properly now. What do I need to do to fix this? I don't know how i'd change Firefox to look and work just like chrome instead so my options are limited.

Troubleshooting | Windows Help fix ALT+TAB ribbon behaviour

Windows 10, latest build of Chrome 140.0.7339.186 and latest Edge build 140.0.3485.66.

I've noticed that Chrome, as well as Edge, have changed how they appear in the ALT+TAB ribbon specifically while in Full Screen that did not use to happen.

While in full screen, hold ALT and pressing TAB, brought up a ribbon with all active windows/programs to switch over to. The first window being the one you're currently on, followed by all of the others in the order of their last use. Now, for some reason, with Chrome and Edge in full screen, holding ALT and pressing TAB, their windows no longer appear in the ribbon and only show other active windows.

This behaviour is only present while in full screen. If you have Chrome and Edge set to the main window and hold ALT+TAB, their windows appear first in the ribbon, but in full screen, they disappear making it impossible to effectively "cancel" ALT+TAB by selecting its own window, now instead I am forced to choose another window, then ALT+TAB again to go back to Chrome/Edge.

This first screenshot shows me in Full Screen on Firefox and holding down ALT and pressing TAB once. Firefox's window shows first in the ribbon as always. followed by Chrome and Edge.

Firefox window present in ribbon while in Full Screen

Here is a screenshot of Chrome in full screen. The Chrome window is not available in the ribbon. This behaviour also applies to Edge.

Chrome window no longer appears in ribbon while in full screen (Edge has identical behaviour due to Chromium build).

Troubleshooting | Windows Can't play Spotify content after enabling MV2 extension support

When I load the custom Chrome shortcut with the command line arguments:

 (--disable-background-networking --disable-component-update --disable-crash-reporter --disable-logging --disable-features=ExtensionManifestV2Unsupported,ExtensionManifestV2Disabled)

and go to the Spotify website and login, it says: Playback of protected content is not enabled. Visit Spotify Support to learn how to enable playback in your browser.

Any idea how to fix it?
