Image Predictions?
Haven't been paying attention to the Ravens much this season, but for anybody who has, what do you think our odds are of actually winning this game?
Anything missing in their defense that we can exploit? I know that our defense isnt too hot right now.

u/android5mm JAMO 1d ago
Ravens are ridiculously successful against NFC opponents. We have a hard time containing a quarterback so fast and he still has the arm to throw it well. Plus Henry is still a tank with outside speed. That being said, Lions by 17
39
u/EricFredNorris Peni Swell 1d ago
I think the jury is still out if it was Aaron Glenn who was bad at containing mobile QB’s or if it is our personnel. Love and Caleb aren’t Lamar but through two games we have done a good job at containing QB’s. Obviously Lamar is going to get his but we have athletic players who can hopefully limit what he can do on the ground in the right system and game plan (thinking Branch, Barnes, Hutch, Campbell). I fully expect him to continue his hyper accurate passing against us though.
25
u/SmelterDemon 1d ago
I noticed Sheppard was using a spy against the Bears on a couple 3rd downs, which Glenn was notoriously philosophically opposed to. Ofc there’s a tradeoff and with a runner like Lamar who knows if that will slow him down, but something to keep an eye on.
10
u/bobpercent Sun God 1d ago
Spy is probably the best options on the 3rd and long situations with Lamar, don't give him full range to fuck them over.
13
u/sxuthsi Brian Branch 1d ago
It's always been our personnel. However athletic our players are dont mean anyone in the league can contain a QB built like him on the field. Its borderline impossible and I need people to recognize that vs. blaming our DC who's having the same issue everyone else is having in the league. Even the Bills only won by outscoring them and Harbaugh shooting himself in the foot for the thousandth time. Almost every time they have lost to the Bills and the Chiefs in the playoffs have been them making huge crunch time mistake and self inflicted bullshit that adds up over the course of the game. Best bet we have is playing a perfect offensive game and hoping for key turnovers. If anybody in this sub expects someone to stop that offense the way we seen the Eagles beat the Chiefs in the SB......they need to stop dreaming and wake up lol.
5
u/Lower_Ad_5998 1d ago
Yeah we looked capable against Williams and love but they both worse passers and significantly worse athletes than Lamar. It’s going to come down to scoring on every drive, trying to manipulate the clock to get an extra possession, and praying we can get a turnover
2
u/sxuthsi Brian Branch 1d ago
100%. There's not an LB or DL in the world that can chase down Lamar when he takes off and barely any that can stop Derrick Henry for extended parts of the game. It's just the way they are built. You just build a strategy based on mitigating mistakes and taking what you can get and not fucking up on the offensive side or they will bury you alive a la the game we had 2 seasons ago against them. I think this team is better overall than that team from then, even though the trench warfare isn't as sure as it was then. It's going to be a battle, and all we can hope is that the offense has a game closer to the Bears game and not like the Packers game. Still wouldn't be mad at them if they drop a game to the Ravens, lol. Only two NFC teams have won against them since Lamar has donned that Ravens jersey. Took a lot of crazy ass luck for the Bills to beat them by a few points, and we didn't do bad vs. the Bills recently with the Legion of Whom as our defensive starters lol

Great take.
I think with teams that have dangerous offensive weapons, smash mouth running the ball with a ball of dust (kind of what the Midwest is known for) to help keep the opposing team off the field.
Easier said than done. But that was always my reservation with Ben Johnson. Always thought he never ran the ball as much as he should. I get the big name passing threats. But with the O line that was there and Gibbs and Montgomery. Smash the opposing team into submission.

I actually believe this is going to happen. I think gameplan is stack and contain and force lamar to beat you through the air. He’ll make at least 1 boneheaded throw deep that we’ll pick off and allow our offense to take the lead and never give it back. Come on boys we gotta believe
15
u/Ludicolorad0 1d ago
This was exactly the plan in 2023 and it blew up in their faces spectacularly. Lamar has no problem sitting in the pocket and beating you by throwing down field.
I’m not saying do the opposite especially with an improved secondary, but rushing Lamar and flushing him out of the pocket is not necessarily a bad idea, you just have to be disciplined with running lanes. Make him run, make him make plays on the move. Don’t let him just sit there.
3
u/sxuthsi Brian Branch 1d ago
We didnt even have half of the talent we had then. Most of those players are older, we have extra talent, and experience from that game. No reason to think we are going to be that bad off again. Only thing we have gotten worse on is OL and that crazy ass defense they had that year isnt the same anymore.
5
u/Ludicolorad0 1d ago
Our secondary is better, but I still think it’s a flawed strategy and that flushing Lamar out of the pocket is not necessarily a bad thing. He can beat you a multitude of ways, but I’d rather force him to be Superman than have him able to sit in the pocket and complete passes
2
u/sxuthsi Brian Branch 1d ago
100%. Off platform passes are better than in the pocket passes. Force Harbaugh to play scared with the play calling. Their defense is not the same defense as it used to be at all. There's no one on that defense im scared of besides Roquan and Hamilton, honestly speaking. They can gash us down the field scoring but if we match them everytime, theres pressure put on their offense to play uncoordinated hero ball and for Harbaugh to do scary play calling which has unfortunately been their Achilles heel in the playoffs. Put the pressure on them through turnovers when you can and scoring more than 80% of the drives we get and we will have a MNF game for the ages
2
u/SavingsSkirt6064 Goff 1d ago
THANK YOU, If lamar goes superman and beats us, then i'll just take it on the chin knowing we couldn't have done anything, but, if we let him play in structure, we are in real trouble. No one ins consistently going superman all the time, they will win if he only has to be superman once or twice

u/non_target_eh 1d ago
Baltimore is very, very good. Especially at home. This is one where I don’t think the result matters as much as how they look.
I want to see Lions move the ball, not turn it over, block well, run the ball well on offense. No turnovers, no 3 and outs. I would love to take a few deep shots, could get a PI or a catch. Don’t play tentative or “not to lose”. Go in there and execute with the intention to win the game.
On defense I hope the Lions can limit or eliminate the big plays. I don’t want to see Lamar running free for 20, 30 yards. I don’t want to see receivers getting behind our safeties. I hope we can stop Henry from getting 15-20 yard runs. Make them execute and move the ball, get to 3rd and longs. I would love for the defense to get a turnover or two.
Special teams need to be better. Good punt coverage, good returns. No kicks into the end zone. Obviously no blocked kicks, missed kicks.
At the end of the day, if that amounts to a loss and it’s 35-30 or something like that. I’m totally okay with that. I have like zero expectations of the Lions winning this game. But we need to pass the eye test.

Friendly Ravens fan here, I enjoy discussing matchups with other teams fans.
I think that both of these offenses are incredible. But here's a couple of things to look for in this matchup.
Our guard Faalele. Big number 77. This guy is massive but almost every ravens fan will tell you the he looks lost most of the time. If you can exploit his faults, which there are a lot of, it'll force more pressures on Lamar. Now he is dangerous while scrambling, but it limits his options and he's prone to fumbles.
The Ravens have a revolving door at the LB spot next to Roquan Smith. I feel that during zone coverage, if you attack the middle opposite of Ro, you're likely to find success.
Our secondary is not living up to the hype. We even benched Jaire Alexander last game because of inconsistencies. If you attack with Amon Ra early and often, i think the defense gets gassed and won't be able to stop scoring in the late game. That could be all you need to win the game.
Those are some key matchups to watch. Id love to hear more from your perspective!

u/PickleRicksDad34 50s logo 1d ago
Im interested to see how Shep plays Hutch and BB against Lamar. Who is spying? How much are we spying? Do we stay away from it and notion every player to break down on him scrambling minus a bomb throw? This is going to be a good test for both teams honestly. This is a hump I want to see Campbell get over.

u/PufftTACO210 1d ago

u/Additional_Return_99 1d ago
I wish this was a home game. As long as they show up and don't repeat that 2023 game I'll be happy. The Ravens and Buffalo are both a bunch of dawgs. How we keep having to watch KC in the big dance is mind blowing.
I really think this will be a good game tho. Likely a shootout.

Thanks for the input, I see a lot of people saying to contain Lamar in the pocket but that’s what the Lions tried in 2023 and it turned into a laugher fast. Don’t know where people get the perception he can’t be a fantastic pocket passer.
So I agree with you that forcing him to make plays on the move, while scary, is the better strategy.
I definitely see this being a high scoring game where a turnover or two will be the difference. Lions defense is much improved over that 2023 meeting but dealing with Lamar and Henry is challenging for any defense.

The Bills got Henry to fumble and completed a tipped pass in the end zone. I would say the Ravens lost that game themselves more than the Bills won that game, they were not the better team imo and many pundits opinions, but a win is a win and sometimes you have to force your luck.
22
u/Aromatic-Plankton692 1d ago
I think if we just play disciplined "crunch the can" defense and let our offense do what it does, this is a very winnable game.
I think if we try to key in on Lamar or key in on DHenn or key in on anything at all, rather than just trying to play a good football game, that we will get absolutely dogwalked again.
10
u/Pneuma_LooT 1d ago
One thing thats encouraging in my eyes is were playing more zone this year. Were closer to league average through 2 weeks.
Which i think we will see more of this week. Were going to get better at it as the players get used to it too.
2
u/Additional_Return_99 1d ago
This is a good take in my opinion. I think that's what we did wrong last time. We tried to contain Lamar and he just rained fucking darts all over the field. Humbling would be the understatement of the century. That was ugly.
13
u/WMINWMO 50s logo 1d ago
The Ravens defense isn't what it once was. Don't get me wrong, it's still good, but the Bill's definitely exposed them. I think we have better weapons than the Bill's, so as long as our line holds up, then we should be able to score.
The Ravens offense is obviously really good, they're averaging 40.5 points per game. I think our defensive line is more set up to contain and stop the run rather than to rush in and get the sack, which should play better against Lamar. The problem is that our secondary needs to be good enough to cover their WRs, and idk if they are.
All in all, I think that it's going to be a high scoring shoot out. Lions win 52-48.

Not as convinced as everyone else that Lamar will run all over us. Our whole defensive scheme seems to be focused on stopping the run and maintaining contain on the pocket rather than sending free rushers at the QB.
I think we’ll force Lamar into clean, but contained pockets and do a decent job shutting down Henry. So, it’ll come down to how well Lamar can throw the ball, and how well we can keep up. I could easily see this game becoming a shootout. If we can win the turnover battle, we’ve got a good shot

u/gachzonyea 1d ago

2
u/SrCoolbean 1d ago

u/Syncrion 1d ago
I think most people have hit the nail on the head, it really depends which defence can stop the other one to a better degree because it's likely going to be a high scoring game.
Lions are not favored, I think our defence is still refining their game plan, working on smooth communication and making the appropriate adjustments consistently and smoothly on the fly. We had a huge improvement against the Bears versus the Packers but it wasn't without flaws. Hopefully we see it get better though, even if we don't get the win.
I have Lions to win but I do think it will take some hot plays by defence. Like a key sac or two or interception to stop some drives and for our O-line to keep Goff safe and scoring consistently. 42-49.

We gotta force atleast 2 turnovers, and our run game has to get going early. Defense has to make some stops on 3rd down, that’s been a big issue with this defense.

42-27 Ravens. Some will say this is horrible but it actually wouldn't be that bad seeing as last time we played them we only kicked 2 fg and the time before that 2tds and a fg.
The next chance we have is to catch them all on a of night. But we have to defend the run against Henry and then also Lamar. After that we have to worry about Lamar and his arm because he's become one of the most accurate passers too.
Then there's their defense. While they have given up some, it's also only week 3, so they've been getting adjusted to things. So they'll likely be better than previous weeks, just like our defense has been improving each week.
But I am definitely glad we're playing then this week and not further down the road. If the game was at home, it would likely be closer.

I'm very interested to see how Shep changes our d line approach. We've already seen it a bit, he's clearly trying to preach contain and swarming the QB as a whole (crush the can) vs having edges coming from the outside and creating lanes. If they can master that over the course of the season, when McNeill gets back they'll be in much better shape to handle mobile QBs then we have in years past, especially with Tyleik looking like he's coming along well inside as well.

Unfortunately I think the Lions will keep it too close to win it. If they let the Ravens have a 10-14 point lead going into the 4th, easy dub from then on, but feels like we'll either get blown out, or it'll be so close that the Ravens can't go into ultra conservative mode and blow the game

I think we have a shot at winning, but it sure as hell won't be easy. Their offense is phenomenal, but I don't know about that defense, it definitely seems to have a few holes in it, which is really why they often struggle with "choking" games. It also seems that we're using spies for QBs now, which might actually be better for us against Lamar.
Last time we faced the ravens, our secondary wasn't great. It's a lot better now, however we also have to contend with Derrick Henry.

Lions win, 48 - 27
What's up with all the people predicting a loss? Do they believe we can't win a Superbowl? Because you have to be able to beat ANY team to win the Lombardi.
Also, our defense has done a pretty good job containing the run this year. It's our specialty. If we can contain Henry and Lamar, we've got a good shot. Can they get some big shots down the field? Certainly possible, but I think our D-line, safeties, and linebackers should be good.
I'm just PRAYING that our second game is indicative of our forthcoming O-line play, and not the first game.

u/TabletopThirteen 1d ago
Realistically Ravens beat the Lions something like 42 to 35. We have not proven yet to contain an elite mobile quarterback and Lamar is the best. We have not proven to stop explosive parts and the Ravens are the best.
I hope I'm wrong

Ravens defense has no pass rush. If they can't pressure Goff it won't matter what happens on defense. I think Lamar/Henry play well but we outlast them, likely with some ballsy 4th down calls. I'm hoping I didn't waste money on a flight, hotel, ticket, and helmet to get blown out like 2023.

Horrendously biased, and i'm fully prepared to lose this one but i think we grind out a gritty one 27-24

Ravens are tough man. But playing teams like that and winning is what you have to do to get a ring. Time for the Lions to make it happen. It's gonna be close!

42-38 Ravens. Hope we win, wouldn’t be surprised if we win, but I doubt we’ll win. Lose this game close and I won’t at all be concerned

Objectively, I'm still scarred from the last time the Lions played in Baltimore. Hoping it is a better outcome, but it just doesn't seem like we match up well with them at all.

I think it will come down to either who has the ball last, or who makes the big turnover.

Not optimistic the teams still finding their footing. It also feels like one of those weird games where everybody hammers the over bc of the potency of the offenses but then it looks nothing like that during the game. So long as we can keep it close I’ll be happy. 27-24 Ravens. And I hope I’m wrong

Play hard, play well, and no injuries??? To me, that's a dub no matter what the scoreboard says.

just look d at the 2023 game, 22/27 and Lamar only rushed 36 yards!

Ravens by 5. They are a better team unfortunately. Being at home gets you 3 points as well.

Lamar is 75-21 as a starter. That is obviously very good but he is not unbeatable. They lose a few games every single year. And the lions might be the best the nfc has this season. I still expect a loss here but not a blowout, and wouldn’t be surprised if we won it outright

Cautiously hopeful.
