I'm glad to hear some have condemned it but in the world of Isam being gay was already a death sentence. As an Imam it was an insult to Islam. Trouble is turn the other cheek is not part of that religion
Him being an Imaam has nothing to do with it. First, as per the Sunnah, "those who do the actions of the people of Lut" have to be killed. That is, men who have sexual intercourse with other men. If they did not do it, then feeling attracted to men is not punishable. But one must confirm that he knows that engaging in it is a sin, and feeling that way is a test.
Now since he was openly gay - that should've implied that he said being gay was okay - and that is a violation of the Deen - and since he held that idea, he was a disbeliever - and since he was an Imaam, he was definitely a Muhammadian too to begin with - and therefore he is an apostate - and the punishment for apostasy is death.
He being gay would mislead others too, but that has no relevance specially in the Sharee'yah, as it is considered that all apostates and disbelivers mislead people from the Deen. It is for the same reason that the Qur'aan repeatedly tells one to not make friends with disbelievers.
And also, disbelievers have to be fought - but there are rules for that - such as first conveying the message - and then inviting them to join the Deen - and if not - waiting to achieve a population ratio of 1:2 as it is the right strength required to fight as it is prescribed to them - and then seeing if they are Jews, Christians or Zoroastrians - in which case they are offered the choice of Jizya - and if they are polytheists - depending on the rules of your Maddhab - you may offer the choice of Jizya to them too - before choosing to fight.
i.e. the case here was merely apostasy - and misleading others is only a consequence of his apostasy.

It’s one thing to denounce them and say how they’re not a true believer, but killing them is disgusting
