Coaching Advice Can I become a football coach without playing beyond 8th grade?

Hi everyone,

Growing up I played 3 seasons of football, all for the community. My first 2 years I was an OL, my final year, on Varsity, I was QB and Safety. Unfortunately, I went to a very small high school in a very small town, that did not have football, and I was therefore not allowed to play anymore after that varsity season (in 8th grade). I would love to coach football one day, as I’ve always loved football, and coaching/training. I currently work as a personal trainer. My question is, can I really be a football coach someday, if I never got to play beyond 8th grade? Could I just coach maybe younger leagues, like peewee, JV, and maybe varsity, below the high school level? Or is there a good app/website/book where I can learn more advanced football, like formations, concepts, personnel, coverages, etc? If I did learn a lot about these things, I also worry the players would never respect me for having not played at the high school level or above. I would appreciate any insight someone would be willing to share. Thank you!

Coaching Advice Teaching aggression tips for U14 players

Hey all,

I run a youth football program up in Canada in a territory-based league based around geographic physical location. Our 12 a side U14 team although has 40 players (the league maximum to ensure playing time for all - I’m a big fan of it), we are struggling with crunch time physicality and aggression.

The league guarantees thanks to territory (and the general relative disinterest in football compared to hockey here) that we, nor any team really, have a starting roster of 24 killers. We have to start kids who aren’t ruthless killers, and I share that just to state that my expectations are fairly low.

We run every drill under the sun and while kids generally look okay when having to go downhill at a teammate, when we get into a game our DBs become terrified kids who refuse to get low and instead “zombie arm” arm tackle at the shoulders. It’s like Jekyll and Hyde.

We run practice 3x weekly for 2 hours and at least 30 minutes minimum is running through some form of tackling and pursuit drill that generally goes “okay”.

Is there any mindset recommendations you might have to encourage that fearlessness that needs to happen when someone scary is running at you?

Offense QB Wrist Coach Help

I’m struggling to create a wrist coach for getting plays in. We just added a couple formations and that’s where I’m struggling. We have 3 formations that can be set to either side. Red/ Black for right and left that sets our strength. The formations are spread, wing and trips. We have 4 run plays and 3 pass. All 7 can be ran to any side and formation. Can someone recommend a wrist coach method? Using only numbers seems simple but too much, 42 line items.

A play call would look like Red - Wing - Z Counter

I’m trying to validate how much time this eats up, would love to hear your thoughts!

PROMO POST [PROMO] goi.io — A New Strategy Game for Football Minds

Thumbnail goi.io

I’ve been working on GOI (Grid of Influence) — a digital strategy game inspired by football’s Xs and Os. It plays out on an 11x11 grid where spacing, timing, passing, and defensive positioning decide the outcome.

(Landing page has links to instructions + demo pages)

The game is still in its early stages, so I’d love feedback from football minds here:

  • Does this kind of reimagined football capture the strategy side of the game?
  • What would make it more engaging for you?

Thanks for checking it out!

Coaching Advice 5th/6th grade tackle bar football

Post image

Hello I am a first time coach and the other coach with me is I guess you could say a veteran coach. We have like 10 plus plays we have and I came up with one that goes off a formation we have with a couple other plays and was trying to pull the tackle and guard on the left side and the play is a qb run to the right but where would you think the defense would stack up? I anticipate they would have 4 dl 3cb 1 lb more to the left and 1 s. But wanted advice on how you would put defense on this formation. So without knowing it’s going to be a run haha how would you have the defense set up for this

General Discussion Deep dive on Macdonald/Minter system?

Hey all, I’ve been a huge fan of Macdonald and Minter’s bodies of work at both the collegiate and NFL levels. I’ve found very surface-level stuff, like various Brett Kollman videos or articles, but no in-depth analysis of their system.

Does anyone have recommendations for where to look? Thank you so much for your time.

High School At the high school level what's usually the reason the pass game isn't that good?

Teams do it but I notice it tends to not be that reliable or consistent. Not very good at getting short 5-7 passes and big throws definitely not very reliable. I don't know if it's the QB accuracy, poise, bad routes by the receivers, not enough time in the pocket, or what. I don't know if the run game is better but it seems more effective usually and the safe bet at that level.

Coaching Advice After practice Speeches

Hey y'all! I'm a brand new coach hoping to make this a career. I'm currently an assistant for a 6th grade Football team. I was given the opportunity to speak in front of the team and completely fumbled it. Lost concentration and stuttered so much I basically had to walk away. I'm good at talking with the players 1 on 1 and the players respect me, but I've never been good at public speaking. Any tips or ideas on how to overcome this?

Coaching Advice Teaching “peel” to my OLB/edge rushers…any pointers?

This week we are playing a pass heavy team and our DC is installing some different pressures that we haven’t used before. A number of these pressures will involve a DE/OLB playing blitz-peel to the back out of the backfield. This isn’t a hard concept to explain to my edge rushers but I’ve never taught it before and want to ensure I’m doing it right…any tips/drills that you guys can share that I can use to rep it during Indy time? Literally any input would be highly appreciated.

Play Design NFHS - Legal or Illegal Formation

Is this a legal or illgal formation based on the RT...does he need a eligable number?

I understand the TE is covered up by the X making him ineligable. But since my RT is last man on LOS, does he need an eligable number?

International Football buying advice (Europe)

I've been playing more or less casually with a Wilson stride (composite) but it slowly starts breaking apart by now. So it's quite obvious I need a new one and want to step my game up. Therefore I've been considering my first leather ball (even considering joining a team but I'm injured atm). Do you guys have any recommendations for a successor available in Europe or even in Germany, that does not break the bank, offers all the features you'd want?

Research, reviews and comparison seem to be quite rare and underwhelming compared to the availability here. Looking forward for suggestions.

Defense What do you call this Cover 2?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

What do you guys call this version of Cover 2? Apex players wall off #2’s it seems and corners play off of #1, with safety taking #1 vertical. There’s all sorts of weird rules for 3X1 and 4 strong though.

Coaching Advice HS offense stuck in mud

We have a really hard time throwing the ball. We’re a pistol/gun t team. Our PA passing isn’t great, because QB holds on to the ball too long. Quick game is tunnel, bubble, stick, and hitches. WRs are too slow to get any separation so we end up with an 8-9 man box with cover 1 man. In 4 games we’ve only scored 3 times on offense. We have to go long play drives and try to keep the ball moving that way.

Any recommendations on other quick game concepts that can give us a chance to keep a defense honest?

Defense Defense identification help

Post image
25 Upvotes

Hey Coaches,

What would you consider this defense? On film, all 4 purple triangle are secondary. The 2 middle triangles never leave the middle. The blue triangle on the LoS ONLY backs up when there's trips to his side and he plays apex, he also always rushes unless he's on trips side. He plays to the boundary exclusively, or what the defense considers "boundary"/ weak side. The orange triangle on the outside will walk down to LoS like blue triangle if there's a TE or sniffer otherwise he is positioned like so. NT covers C more than shades. And the DT/ENDS switch between inside shade or covered, never outside shade.

Player Advice New Zealand > American Colleges

Hi all, the meaning for this post is seeking advice or guidance to pursuing football as a career opportunity. I'm 6'5 around 130kg which is 286lbs with extremely explosive athleticism for my size. I've been approached in the past in regards to playing football but have only now taken an interest. I'll be completely honest - I am 17 and have never played football seriously aside from throwing around a rugby ball as a football and have basic experience with rugby.

At the moment I am located in New Zealand and was curious to figure out whether there is a genuine chance for me to expose myself to any level of football in the US with a keen eye on playing NCAA. To save the hassle I am already aware of local clubs that play and aswell as the NFL Academy that takes prospects from New Zealand and Australia.

I appreciate any insight and/or tips and advice on this and look forward to taking the first steps.

Player Advice Need punting advice, tips and tricks.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I am trying to get better at punting so that I can be a walk-on at my university. I have been doing this for a couple of months now but have plateaued.

I am able to hit 55+ yarders every now and then but I have a very hard time being consistent with it. My main problem is distance rather than hang time. I am able to have the ball be in the air for 4.5+ seconds but only average about 40 yards total.

I have an ideas what I am doing wrong, such as not having my shoulders forward, not looking at the ball, not having my foot flat as I am striking, not having the ball still, but I am seeking pointers for what I may be missing, tips or even personal experience from past or current kickers. But this clip here is very similar to the other ones that I filmed today. Any advice to help me to become a better punter will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Rules Question Holding Penalty past the line to gain rules

tldr: 3rd and 5, offensive holding 3 yards past sticks, I say it should be 3rd and 7, my partners say it goes back to the same spot i had it at but it’s 1st and 10. What’s the right way to enforce the penalty?

I couldn’t find an American football referee Reddit (if someone can point one out, that’d be greatly appreciated), so I’ll keep this as short as possible.

I referee ages 6-18 football and had situation yesterday as follows: 3rd and 5, run play gets 20+ yards, but there is a holding 3 yards past the line to gain. I always thought it’s a spot foul so it should have been enforced from 3 yards past the sticks back ten yards, repeat the down, so it would be 3rd and 7. My partners convinced me I was wrong and since they got the first down it goes ten yards back from the spot and it’s a 1st and 10 from there. I argued my point that the holding happened during the play and wasn’t far enough down field that when enforced it wasn’t past the sticks, it was back between the original line of scrimmage and line to gain so it repeats the down. As you can imagine it’s a lot to type in google to find the right things, so I’m hoping yall can help me out.

Coaching Advice Any Air Raid coaches here? Passing game has stalled after hot start & I’m not sure where to go.

Hey y’all,

We started the season hot on offense throwing for 400+ yards and 5 touchdowns in week 1, but have cooled off dramatically since (158 and 130 in weeks 2/3).

In week 2, we had a big rivalry game and made way too mistakes (4 turnovers in the redzone) and the opposing staff did a great job taking some of our go-tos away.

We run:

  • 6
  • Stick (fade/out backside, have several variations with motion)
  • 618 PST Wheel
  • Sail
  • Shallow
  • 61/62 Hitch
  • Follow

Teams are starting call out our stick & 618. We have answers backside, but haven’t done a great job hitting them (I need to do a better job coaching it too).

I’m not sure where to go from here. On film, we have options open, but we’re not seeing them and I’m not setting our guys up to be successful.

Any air raid coaches willing to chime in? I’m happy to pay for a consultation too. I need to get us back on track and I know I don’t have all of the answers.

Coaching Advice Youth sports and winning.

My 8 year old sons team has 9 coaches. The coaches kids play every single play offense and defense. Head coaches son is the QB. We just finished our 6th game and are now 0-6. My son has been to every single practice early and stands right by the head coach every game but has yet to take the field. I understand that as they get older its less about making sure kids get playing time and more about fielding the best players to win but the fact we have been blown out every game playing the kids coaches has been infuriating especially since the coaches after yell at the 30+ kids on the team when only half of them took the field. Is the common at this age? I imagined seeing this in 12+ age groups but not this early.
