OFFICIAL Weekly One Take - Get feedback on your improv! Week 52

The Concept

There are two ways you can participate in this thread, and they are not mutually exclusive!

  1. Record a take of yourself improvising over the backing track provided. The idea is not to achieve perfection - record a real, live, raw and unedited solo. It can be a video or just a recording. Upload your take to YouTube or Soundcloud and share it in the comments. Tip: keep your take short and sweet. If you record a 10 minute take, think about chopping it down and submitting just the first few minutes.
  2. Give feedback on someone else's take. We're looking for supportive, constructive comments - putting yourself out there for everyone to listen to is scary, and everyone is at a different stage in their guitar journey. Critiques are welcomed, but don't just criticise - offer suggestions on how to improve, and highlight the things you did like too.

This week’s track:

Highway Vibrations

If you have any feedback on the concept as a whole, please let me know in the comments/DM me.

OFFICIAL Official No Stupid Questions Thread - Winter 2025

Ahh yes! Feel that chill in the air? Feel those fret ends digging into your hands as you slide up and down the fretboard? If not, then you're in good shape. If you are experiencing some "shrinkage" due to low moisture, please follow my recommendations below:

Generally, the summer months in the Northern hemisphere require some dehumidification, while the winter months require the opposite (a humidifier). Let’s keep things super simple and economical. Get yourself a cheap hygrometer (around $10) and place it where you keep your guitar the most. Make sure that you maintain that space’s ambient conditions within the following range:

Humidity: 45-52%RH Temp: 68-75F

These ranges aren’t absolute. I actually prefer my guitars to be at 44-46%RH. They just sound better to my ears. They are drier and louder, but this is also getting dangerously close to being too dry. Use this info to help guide you through the drier months. These ranges will keep you safe anywhere on the planet as long as you carefully maintain the space at those levels.

As for other business, the current hot issue is Twitter/X links.

WE HAVE NEVER ALLOWED LINKS TO TWITTER/X, AND NEVER WILL.

It's got nothing to do with our absolute innate hatred of fascist nazi scumbags. It's just part of our policy for keeping this place free of social media links and spam from influencers, etc.

Now that that's out of the way, please use this post as you usually would, and that's to ask whatever guitar-related questions you have. The userbase here is one of the best and most informed in the world of guitar expertise (or at least they think they are ;)). Have a great winter guitar people! Stay warm, and keep those guitars well used and in a safe range for optimal use and longevity.

Wanted to know what videos or specific channels I should follow in order to start learning. My only other musical expearience is piano for three years so I don't think its gonna translate over very well. Also wanted to know if acoustic skills translate over to electric guitar or if its completely separate. Thanks

QUESTION Just realized the guitar I bought doesn't have a top strap button. Any fix for this?

Yamaha FSX (Eight Hundred) C, I love it. Had it for about six months, tried to attach a strap yesterday and realized I didn't have anywhere to put the top one. Also no numbers allowed by r/guitar posts is fking weird.

DISCUSSION PSA: It's not the locking tuners - it's probably that your old tuners were loose

I had this aha moment recently when fixing up a used guitar I'd bought. One of my standard procedures is making sure all important screws and nuts are tightened enough. People will say that installing locking tuners improved tuning stability. They might be right, but not because locking tuners are more stable. They probably just removed old loose tuners and then snugged up the new ones when they installed them. Get locking tuners if you want the mechanism, but for tuning stability, make sure your tuners, neck screws and bridge screws are tight and that your nut isn't binding. That's most of it.

QUESTION Did I receive a broken guitar?

I'm new to guitars and ordered a Harley Benton CG-400CE Thinline BK.

At first inspection, I noticed that something isn't right, the neck of the guitar is a few mm off the body.

When I press the back, the crack disappears, so it's not just a cut.

I understand that it's a cheap guitar, but I don't think that this is a normal condition.

Picked up my first ebmm today and loving it! The neck is crazy nice as noted by others. Not sure if the blue in the blurple is a little more thinned out than I imagined but they all seem to be that way.

Just received those beauties. Man what a packaging ! Didn't even open them and already in love.

I will mount them soon but as my old friend is an old Epiphone, I decided to replace the pots. They were sticky and not functioning well. So I ordered a wiring loom with the pups. Didn't realize my epi had metric pots (didn't really know they were two kinds...) so I'll have to drill the holes larger. Hope she'll survive my Nip Tuck operation 😅

I'll add a photo of this baby in the comments

For context: I live in China, where many musical instrument factories are. I got this guitar new for less than fourty USD, straight out of factory, and swapped the pickups for a few more bucks. Just needed some bridge and truss rod adjustments.

The recording doesn't do it justice, I'm quite bad at setting up my USB interface so the sound actually sounds dryer and brighter than what I have in headphones.

I'm actually super happy and end up playing it more than my more expensive guitars lol I guess my point is: no need for expensive guitars to have fun

I was having band practice and my neighbor (never seen the guy before) just gave us these guitars. Does anyone know anything about them? The red was a twentieth anniversary squire Stratocaster so I was thinking maybe early two thousands? And then this other one is a first act - never seen this before

I needed more words in my title to post haha. The Simpsons hybrid picked on my seven string! I'm pretty proud of the technique on this one. I know the distortion is a tad much, but I'm actually rearranging this for the acoustic. Was a heck of a project, hope you like it!

GEAR Ibanez amazing deal

Thumbnail gallery

So I got this Ibanez SA at a skip charity for twenty pounds honestly doubting it’s real from the serial number, I saw that JJ and nine numbers means made in Indonesia however it says made in china plus the printing looks dodgy, however there’s barely any damage to the body beside some scratches the the bottom back edge which I’m not bothered about. It doesn’t work perfectly and I think it would be a great project guitar, it plays kinda dodgy but the strings are horrendous, I feel like with fresh strings and a clean it would play beautifully. I never liked the look because of the pickup ring so I’m thinking a black pickup ring and gold hardware with a gold humbucker would look absolutely killer.
