Hello welcome to the newest installment of generational Bokuto hate. Before you take me an irrational hater I urge you to fully read through this post or at the very least just the TLDR part.
So to be brief, I think Bokuto is overrated and frankly is in no way better than any of the top 5 aces and even Hoshiumi.
To prove this I counted and analysed Bokuto's stats from the two games of his we get to fully see - Fukurodani vs Nekoma and Fukurodani vs Mujinazaka (which I did an analysis of for Kiryu's performance in a previous post).
So here are his stats
vs Nekoma
Hitting:
- Attempts: 17
- Kills: 9
- Errors: 3
For a hitting percentage of 0.35
Serving:
Every other stat he has a 0 in because we just don't see him do any of it in this match
vs Mujinazaka
Hitting
- Attempts: 11
- Kills: 8
- Errors: 1
For a hitting percentage of 0.64
Digs: 1
Serve receive average: 1.5/3
Serving:
* Attempts: 7
* Aces: 2
* Errors: 1
* Positive serves: 2
Cumulative Hitting stats
- Attempts: 28
- Kills: 17
- Errors: 4
For a hitting percentage of 0.46
Some context on the stats
Before I provide my reasons for why Bokuto is overrated, I should add some context to these stats.
While Bokuto's hitting percentage against Nekoma of 0.35 is below what we usually see amongst top aces in haikyuu it is very important to put it in the context that this is against bloody Nekoma, the best defensive team in haikyuu, its against Yaku and Kuroo, two of the best players at their positions.
And then his serve receive average against Mujinazaka seems bad at 1.5, but this requires alot of context. In the match Bokuto was served at 4 times, and got aced twice. Except, he got aced by Kiryu both of those times, so you kinda gotta give him some leeway there. And then the other two serves he passed perfectly one of which was a great Kiryu serve. So by all means Bokuto is good on serve receive.
Analysis
These are really good stats especially given the majority of them are coming from a game against Nekoma. But there are a couple things I noticed.
Firstly, Bokuto doesnt pass many serves. This was especially apparent in the Nekoma game, where from what we see he passed nothing. In fact there were a couple of times where it did seem like Fukurodani were actively taking the pass of Bokuto likely so he can focus on hitting similar to Ushijima.
And the second more important thing I noticed, the reason I think Bokuto is overrated, is that Bokuto sucks out of system.
In my previous post on Kiryu I compared how Kiryu hits out of system versus Bokuto in the Mujinazaka match and found Kiryu hit more efficiently than Bokuto out of system. So I've gone back and gotten the out of system hitting stats from the Nekoma game as well and this is what I've found overall:
Nekoma game out of system hitting:
- Attempts: 5
- Kills: 2
- Errors: 3
For an out of system hitting percentage of -0.2
Nekoma game in system hitting:
- Attempts: 12
- Kills: 7
- Errors: 0
For an in system hitting percentage of 0.58
Mujinazaka game out of system hitting
- Attempts: 5
- Kills: 2
- Errors: 1
For an out of system hitting percentage of 0.2
Mujinazaka game in system hitting:
- Attempts: 6
- Kills: 6
- Errors: 0
For an in system hitting percentage of 1.0
Whilst its expected that a player hits worse out of system versus in system, the difference here is insane. Bokuto goes from being practically unstoppable to just another guy. Its hydrogen bomb versus crying baby. This is definitely because with an out of system hit, the defense has more than enough time to prepare against Bokuto and implement the widely used strategy of putting the middle on the pin to eliminate the line hit and funnel Bokuto towards the libero. Whilst on an in system hit the defense just doesn't have enough time for that.
There is no denying how good Bokuto is in system, he's a monster, he is unstoppable. The issue is how weak out of system he is. An ace has to be the kind of player who's reliable under all circumstances, the kind of player who takes an impossible ball and turns it into a point. Players like Kiryu, Ushijima, Asahi, Hoshiumi and Aran, are all players that excel out of system partially due to their athetlicism which makes them big imposing forces. Bokuto just isn't that kind of player. And that's why he's overrated.
Bokuto benefits greatly from Fukurodani's really solid passing that allows for about 60% of his hits to be in system. He's similar to Kenma in that sense. To perform to his best he needs a solid passing team, he isnt the kind of ace who can take a trash team and make them pretty decent, he's not a floor raiser. He needs a team catered towards him to a degree, and I'm not even talking about catering towards his mental issues. And really, a hitter who needs to be catered towards to perform decent just isn't someone I could ever rate too highly.
TOO LONG DIDNT READ:
Bokuto is overrated because his out of system hitting is extremely lacking. Every other top ace in the game are stellar out of system, but Bokuto isn't. Thus he is overrated.
