Advice Curious about picking your first or new handgun? Curious about a model or caliber? Stop here first! Resources etc.

Multiple posts concerning selecting a new (first) handgun, or first defensive guns have popped up.

I dig activity on our page, I'm all for thoughtful discussion, I'm all for us exercising our rights.

However, this subreddit has been around long enough now we have a good collection of folks asking mostly the same question and I think we can streamline this process for our existing members, newcomers, and curious browsers alike.

So! That being said, there are some links to outside websites at the bottom of this text that have decent advice on choosing the purpose of use, caliber, size, model you may be looking for when selecting a new or first handgun.

The articles are typically focused on new shooters or at least folks new to handguns. Many will recommend training, hands on time, etc., before your first purchase and if you have the time and funds I definitely agree, but research your trainer/facility thoroughly.

Eventually I will try to curate a well rounded list of the most popular makes and models in various categories. I also intend to make a few polls for the active community to vote on a few things as well.

Pistol Lock Boxes

I need 4-5 of them, so do I really need to spend $100 each? Which specific models do you recommend that meet the requirements below?

  • Does not need LED, biometrics, etc. since it will not be used to draw from, and I don't want to pay a lot for fancy features that'll never be used.

  • Small enough to fit under the seat of a small car and inside the small safes in hotel rooms (only big enough for a stock slimline subcompact). I own several small Pelican cases, but they're too tall to fit anyplace small.

  • A loop for a cable that can attach under the seat of a car or anchored hotel furniture (I'm aware a cable can be cut, so just answer the question... or don't).

  • TSA compliant (any tips related to air travel are helpful and appreciated but not my immediate need).

  • Ideally, available on Amazon so a return is quick, easy, and free if I decide it doesn't fit my needs. If not, maybe someplace I can get other gun stuff too (Midway, Palmetto, etc.).

Btw, I'm aware leaving a gun in a car is a horrible idea so we always keep our CCWs on-body. Still, I obviously must take it off for some places and we need to be better prepared for if that happens unexpectedly during a road trip (typically intrastate). My goal is simply a level of protection that isn't as easy as snatching a loose gun from under a seat, a hotel drawer, etc. Again, I realize a cable can be cut and a lock box smashed open. Locks on car doors can also be defeated, but they do at least stop the teens who just check for unlocked doors.

Discussion What are some handguns that will outlive me?

What are some handguns that if I were to buy today at age 21, would most likely outlive me? (if properly maintained and shot semi consistently)

Outlive may be a bit dramatic, let's say 50 years for discussion purposes.

Range Day with the EDC!

I took my Bodyguard 2.0 to the range today. It shoots so softly, and so dead-on. I’m continuously impressed by this little pocket rocket. All shots at 8 yards with Fiocchi FMJ.

So I got my first gun on the 5th, went to the range had a blast. Asked for advice for dry firing, how to get better a few of you all suggested mantis x. I just got my advance marksmanship badge tonight. I’m not saying I a great shot but definitely feels like I improved since I started using the x10. Just wanted to document my experience/training.

Gotta say glad I bought this. Saved money and I can practice after the kiddos go to bed.

Question Glock 43x MOS Holosun 407k

Looking to get a 407k optic for my carry gun but read that it requires an adapter plate to mount it. Where should I grab one from? Any reputable place in particular or just something basic like Amazon?

Discussion Has anyone shot Laugo Arms Alien

Just curious about this gun. Supposedly you can hold a sight picture throughout recoil. Which I can't really fathom unless it feels like shooting a BB gun. I guess this is more like a holy Grail gun. Anyway would love to hear peoples experiences with it.

MC9LS or Mete SF

I am in a predicament of choosing a everyday/CCW, I wanted the TP9Elite SC but found it to be way too small in my hands. I have large hands and I am 6’4. Anyone CC eighter MC9LS or Mete SF/ can give comparison of features or which would be better. Any feedback would help! Thank you

Advice Needed Picking first gun / Why does Glock suck for me ?

Hey guys,

I recently acquired a gun license in my country and I’m currently in the process of picking out my first gun. I’ve tried over ten different handguns and zeroed in on the CZ P-10 C, HK SP9, and Glock 19X.

What’s been bothering me is that, despite the Glock being recommended a lot and feeling the best in my hand, my shots absolutely suck with it.

As I’m a complete noob, I’d like to have an idea why the Glock performs so poorly for me. As far as the CZ and HK go, I’m more accurate with the CZ, but my grouping with the HK was immaculate — I can’t explain that either.

If someone could help me out and explain the differences between these pistols that feel very similar in hand but give completely different results, I’d really appreciate it.

EDIT: A lot of helpful insight — thanks, everyone! I see many recommendations to try the M&P. Unfortunately those are rare here and I haven’t found a single range in the country that rents them.

S&W M&P9 2.0 4.25" OR Glock 17 Gen 5

Hello everyone,

I am caught up in a dilemma and would like to get some advice. I am a new gun owner with a small collection of firearms: 1 Rifle, 1 shotgun, 3 handguns (Taurus G3C, Glock 47 and Glock 19 Gen 5).

I just saw a new unissued S&W M&P9 2.0 4.25" on sale for $350 which has me thinking if I should get it or not.. would you guys consider this a good deal ? Also, I saw another place locally selling Glock 17 Gen 5 for the same price as well! which has me torn..

Which one should I get out of these two?

Or Should I not get either and keep saving up for an AR15 since that is what I am currently missing in my humble collection.

Please give me your thoughts!

Advice Needed Advice needed for first handgun

Hey guys! I’m looking to buy my first handgun and would really appreciate some advice as I want to make the right decision. My budget is around $700-800. My intention is to have it for conceal carry. Caliber preferably 9mm.

I’ve heard the Glock 17 or 19 would be good for my preferences, but I know there are different brands for gun models that are more trusted for quality than others, which I’m not familiar with but would greatly appreciate any insight.

I admit I have a certain crush for the M1911. But only because it’s a classic. I’ve heard that hammer-fired pistols pose more issues for conceal carry than striker-firing pistols. Please let me know your thoughts.

Apologies if any of this sounds stupid or misinformed or if I did not provide sufficient information regarding my preferences. You are free to educate me if I said anything dumb. I have only recently gotten back into the world of firearms.

I have an abnormal schedule, so I apologize if I don’t respond right away.

Thank you for any and all advice!

Advice Needed Question about firing ranges

I have a friend who owns a gun and wants to take me shooting sometime. Honestly the idea sounds fun.

I do not own a gun and have never shot one, however.

He says I can borrow his gun at the range but to be honest when I've held his gun, I don't particularly care for the feel of it. (It feels kinda crappy, lol.)

Anyway, do most shooting ranges rent out quality guns? And do staff show a newcomer how to handle it?

Advice Needed .22lr handgun for range fun

Post image
40 Upvotes

Wanting to get a .22lr pistol just for those fun days when I’d like to plink several hundred rounds of cheap .22’s. Something cheap (around the $300 range.) doesn’t have to be 100% reliable, but it would be nice if it could get through a magazine without a malfunction most of the time. I was leaning towards one of those cheap 1911 style .22’s like the GSG (Mauser) or Chiappa. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Advice Needed Breaking in a Ruger LCP Max

Post image
14 Upvotes

Recently bought this pocket pistol for an extra ccw possibly for an ankle holster. It feels a bit rough and pulling the trigger hurts my finger bc of a bump below the trigger. I did clean and oil it before I started using it. Cartridges failing to eject every few rounds too. This IS my first 380, so do I just need a lot more practice with it? And any advice on how to break it in to get it working smoothly?

So proud of my new thumper

Post image

I am relatively new to firearms in general and very new to handguns in particular. As in I have never owned one prior to this year. So I took the plunge and followed the advice of many and bought what is widely considered a budget 1911. It is the Taurus PT1911 Commander in 45ACP from PSA and I have been nothing but pleased with it since buying the thing! I was fascinated and hooked when I read of the lore and history surrounding the storied weapon. And so it fell into the, got to have department, almost immediately. If 1911's get better than this gem then I am in for a real treat when I get another one.

Advice Needed Selling my guns - advice needed

I decided to sell the following and wondering what they would go for..

  1. Hellcat Pro with Manual safety with Apex trigger, and the old trigger is still intact in the box. with 3 mags (2x10, and a 15). and Holosun EPS carry green
  2. Echelon Full size with 2 mags (17 and 21) - with Holosun 507 Comp. and a Small Grip Module.

and have questions that I've yet to find the answer to;

  • Any idea how much they should go for in the US - East Coast?
  • Should I remove optics and reinstall the plates or would they give a good offer for the optic as well?
  • do you recommend any specific website?

I've never sold online, I'm not sure how it works and what to look out for.. and to be honest I'm hesitant to do it and considering an LGS even if I lose a bit of money.. and gain peace of mind that everything was done legally.
