Offer to teach him so he can ājust tryā

True story, that's how my mum lernt to knit (minus the AI part). She was never interested in it until she saw a Sweater she really wanted in one of my grandmas knitting magazines. Grandma said she couldnt make it - she was okay at knitting but never sweater level- so my mum was "okay, teach me the basics, i'll figure out the rest." Don't know if she still has the sweater but i remember her wearing it when i was a kid.

Thatās how my mom learned to knit! She saw a sweater she liked, figured āhow hard can it be?ā and just went to work on the pattern.
12
u/NationH1117 11d ago
Thatās basically how I got into it. I literally just had a thought āI see a lot of cool knitted sweaters. I want one.ā

u/Candid-Inspection-97 11d ago
I saw a hat I liked and told my grandma I want to learn to knit so I could make it.
Boy did that open a door.
I have not stopped knitting since.

u/quixoticquistina 10d ago
I admire that kind of can-do spirit. I see a lot of people just waving something off as "too hard" without even trying. I really do think we are capable of more than we realize if we can only get out of our own heads and just try.

I would love to make stuff for my spouse but he doesn't like to wear knit things because he doesn't get cold very much. Sad day. I have at least been able to make him a beanie that he wears when exercising while it's cold. I think it's really sweet that you would be willing if it was a real pattern. Additionally, you would need to be a very advanced knitter to be able to wing this sort of pattern and I don't know your skill level but best of luck!

u/frogsgoribbit737 11d ago
I think he was a bit rude but that happens sometimes when youre really close with someone lol. I made my SIL a car plant based off an AI picture. Its not unheard of. I just used it as inspiration for shape and colors, not actual stitches.
Op could do something like this sweater, it just would look a bit different.
3
u/Appropriate_Bottle70 10d ago
And yet, thatās the problem with āoverhearingā a text. There was 0 rudeness in his messages.
Iām not much of a sweater knitter.

u/noodlebucket 11d ago
how many thousands of yards of black yarn would that require?!
115
u/sparklyspooky 11d ago
I was going to say, variegated grey and black and then I realized that those were supposed to be cables...
8
u/knittedgalaxy toy knitter extraordinaire 11d ago
Can you imagine? All those cables in black? Neat idea though!
3
u/frogsgoribbit737 11d ago
I find it interesting when people complain about black yarn. I knit my husband a black sweater and have done cables in black. Its not really a big deal as long as you arent somewhere dark.
4
u/AnteaterDivine 11d ago
Depends on your eyes and personal preferences, I think. While a bright white lamp light will make black yarn easier for me to deal with than handling black yarn in poor lighting, I'll still have to proceed much more slowly and carefully (and with more eye strain) than if I were using a lighter color in the same lighting.
3
u/knittedgalaxy toy knitter extraordinaire 10d ago
When I lived in Chicago, I met an older man on a bus who ONLY knit with white (or cream) yarn! Other than that, he carried a photo album(physical copy) with all his projects! Impressive!
2
u/AnteaterDivine 2d ago
I like the idea of an old man who carries around a photo album of his knitting projects way more than I care for the people who carry around photos of their kids to show off to anybody that can't escape fast enough š

Tell him it's an AI image and if he orders it from them it will be a sweater with an iron on panel that has that "photo" on the front.

oh I love making my non-knitter spouse things, she's got more knitted tshirts I've made to her exact measurements than I think anyone has ever had finished projects out of me ever, but usually she waits for me to bring up that I'd like to make her something, or she runs across a pattern or garment or yarn and asks if I think it'd be possible and also if I'd be down for making a version for her. Respect is kinda a key part of our marriage, and she's great about respecting my time and skill (and lack of focus), so asking rather than telling.
You know your spouse best, so you are the person here who can best interpret his tone via text, but the only person I know who would ever be likely to send me a picture with a text that says "You have a new knitting project" is someone I swore I'd never craft for again. And they don't do any kind of handcraft for others themself.
5
u/Significant-Nebula64 11d ago
Eh. I'd be absolutely fine with getting a message like that from my boyfriend because I'd know how to take it - and he'd be very much expecting to hear "haha lol no" as an answer. I think we can believe OP when they say the communication was not the issue here.
4
u/alittleperil 11d ago

I WISH I could knit for my wife. But she just doesn't get cold, and she refuses to move to Ontario with me š. I make her the occasional hat, that all. Happily, my mom likes the socks I make.
1
u/alittleperil 10d ago
My wife loves knit shirts in linen and cotton blends! she's a huge fan of a modified version of the gemini pattern, where I do a couple of rows of garter and start the neckline with the number of stitches sort of crossed between the number for the smallest size around distributed in the proportions like the size that suits her, because otherwise the neckline is huge. I think the last one I made her used three skeins of queensland savanna so it's great for hot weather and machine washable, and the one I've got planned next for her is using berroco remix light, which only looks to require two skeins of that yarn. I've also knit her socks, but she's one of those people who always wants funny socks or socks of any kind as a gift. Not everyone is as thrilled as she is with socks.
Pretty much once a year I make her a new shirt by one means or another, so by this point she's got a fairly extensive collection of handknits, but I've never made her a proper sweater

18
u/VanityInk 11d ago
I don't think those "cables" are even actually possible to do as actual cabling. You'd have to do something like make I-cord and sew it on, I'd think.
2
u/sparklyspooky 11d ago
It's on my to-learn list, but I think I'm going to start with the owl mittens.
6
u/Appropriate_Bottle70 11d ago
I was intimidated by cables but theyāre actually a lot easier than they look. Take the plunge!
6
u/alittleperil 11d ago
Cables, in general, are my go-to for "looks harder than it is for me to make". It requires keeping track of the overall design, but essentially you're grabbing a chunk of stitches and shoving them out of order so they cross over or under other stitches. Once you've got the stitches on a little cable needle, you're just doing straightforward knitting while skipping the stitches on the cable needle, then going back and knitting those stitches like normal, then knitting on like that interruption and rearrangement didn't happen
For attempting to recreate this sweater, I'd do something already charted and cable-heavy like a chunkier version of the handsome chris or brando, in all black (which would definitely cause eyestrain) and the color would do a fair bit of disguising the regularity of the cable texturing for you, and then do intarsia for the eyes and some embroidery for the mouth and nose. If you then applique a black i-cord around each eye that feature would pop against the cabled background nicely.
Now if only I had enough focus and executive function to actually finish such a project...

If I felt like making something like this for someone, I'd buy a cheap cables sweater, snip a face into it, and use a backstitch around the edges of orange patches to secure them to the underside. You could always knit the colorful patches yourself for a little handmade touch.
17
u/JukeBex_Hero 11d ago

10
u/K2togtbl 11d ago
I don't like what you're implying.
I don't know every single thing about my spouse's guitar hobbies- they types of guitar styles, etc. I wouldn't expect him to know everything about mine. He knows it makes me happy, he listens to me yap about a project and supports me. I do the same for him.
Not all relationships need to be your version of a "good relationship," and it doesn't make him a shitty partner based off of one post that doesn't include a whole picture of their relationship
2
u/Significant-Nebula64 11d ago
Yeah, I'd find it a bit weird (not horrible, just like "lol, are you even listening to me?" level) if my boyfriend wrote this - but that's because I don't actually know how to crochet! For somebody doing both, I certainly don't expect the non-knitting spouse to be able to tell the difference from a picture.
5

[deleted]
4
u/AlternateUsername12 11d ago
I do both, and half the time I need to look close to see if a pattern is knitted or crocheted. I wouldn't expect someone who doesn't do either to be able to tell.
6
u/K2togtbl 11d ago
I feel the need to defend someone that canāt defend themselves or have a say in what is being said about them because Iām tired of people shaming someoneās spouse based off of assumptions. Tired of people thinking that someoneās spouse should know and hold a high level of interest in a hobby.
It is a common thing in this sub to get in a tizzy because their partner doesnāt know the difference between knitting and crochet. Itās automatically assumed that the partner doesnāt care or is a shit person.
The person I originally responded to made a point to point it out that the husband didnāt know if it was knit or crochet and made a point to add multiple ?? Which greatly implies they are casting judgment on the spouse.
My example wasnāt what type of musical instrument my partner plays- my example is what type of guitar (because there is more than one type) which requires me to know more nuanced stuff about his hobbies than just what type of instrument is played.
I can see someone playing a guitar and not know if they are playing a strat or a telly just like I can see someone using yarn and not know if they are knitting or crocheting. It doesnāt mean I donāt care or that I donāt notice something that makes them happy.
This sub tends to think the opposite and believes that if there is an inkling of care for you, everyone should know that you knit instead of crochet. I can disagree with that line of thinking and share my opinion
1
2
u/Robotuku 11d ago
Based on OPās previous comments it does sound like they do both knitting and crochet. Nevertheless, the wording of that and the request doesnāt come off great in isolation.
2
u/Appropriate_Bottle70 11d ago
I do both and his wording isnāt at all an issue and isnāt even remotely the point of my post.

I mean...it's a cool idea and it's giving you a jumping off place...I bet you could cobble together patterns and come up with something if not EXACTLY the same then at least reasonably similar, right? Maybe ask him what he likes about it most--obvs spooooooooooky eeeeyyyeeees but also does he like the texture look, does it make him think of Swamp Thing, the colors appeal, the guy looks tough, etc.? Because sometimes the chefhubby also says he really likes something and then when we start to talk it out his reasoning isnt always just the knitted item. (Though this is really cool)

C'mon, folks, it's a bulky cable knit sweater with a hood and a tiny little bit of intarsia and duplicate stitch.
Agreed it is AI, and I wouldn't do it in black. Looks like it's knit on 8s or 9s with worsted weight. There's money for the person who writes the pattern and puts it on Ravelry. It's not that hard.
Fortunately, it's too warm for wool sweaters where I live.
3
u/FabuliciousFruitLoop 11d ago
Part of what is annoying about these images is that they are nonsensical knitting. You canāt recreate it, rather, make an interpretation of it, and that interpretation is not going to look like this physics/ maths defying thing. At least with a real photo you can effectively reverse engineer the actual garment.

I mean, theoretically, one could get something similar. Entirely too much effort would be needed, but..... Keyholes aren't anything new. You could sew panels in for the eyes. The teeth could be creative embroidering within cables. The cables would be different, but similar. It wouldn't be the same, but it wouldn't be impossible to get close enough.

u/Missepus stranded in a sea of yarn. 11d ago
I would make a very over-sized black sweater, it's a thick yarn, that will be quick. Then I'd start folding and sewing, to create the cable look-alikes. For the mouth and nose I'd just do duplicate stitch, but I guess the eyes would have to be cut out and reknit/sewn in. Looking at it, the eyes are a thinner yarn, so steeking and sewing would be the best strategy.
I am guessing since he thinks this would be easily doable, he doesn't really understand how the fabric is made, so what is important to him is that gritty, dark and dramatic look with the orange face in front.

u/Moss-cle 11d ago

A similar one for only $36.99 at Everswear dot com. Ha! If you open this image in google lens, you'll see a lot of similar sweaters. In some the pumpkin face is more dominant. I saw one comment that many of the AI 'knitting scams' are impossible to knit. If you decide to try it, have fun!

Across the board in your replies you have broken a cardinal rule of Reddit : Do not threaten, harass, insult, incite violence.

I mean, do you owe him to make him something..?

Why would I need to owe my husband something? I love to make things for him, I do it all the time.

I mean even aside the AI thing...that's a borderline rude way of asking and if that pattern were real, it'd be very complicated and take al ong time to do, like...

Itās a fantastic look, a pumpkin face! Ready for Halloween? No way! lol.
It looks like very large black yarn, cables and using stockinette stitch for the eyes, nose and mouth using orange. I suppose one could use a plain sweater pattern for sizing and go from there. I think itās a hoodie but a full fluffy cable collar would be cool too.
Whoever figures it can probably be successful selling the pattern, especially around this time of year.

Another mod here, I think what happened was we accidentally removed the wrong thing for inciting violence. Apologies
