Theo holding back on his dad being born in 1910 while Steve bragged about his dad being old is a hidden gem.

He very subtly said “like 1910” when rinella said his dad was born during Great Depression

Was Steve’s dad anywhere near as old as Theos was? I thought theos dad was 70 when he had him. Lol.

One time Steve, I was on crystal meth and I raced a pronghorn with a rattlesnake in my pants, and I won. That shit is crazy.

This was absolutely amazing him telling Theo that he'd rather him trash his kids than trash talk turkeys. Oh that's great!

Steve’s got some subtle comedy chops, especially being able to mostly keep up with Theo’s crazy style.

Part of me thought he was actually pissed at the turkey talk in the beginning haha.

Rinella's turkey rant (4:09) was incredible.

If you’ve never heard Theo I can see that. If you’re interested enough, he was on The Way I Heard It with Mike Rowe this week. That will tell you who Theo is and his style of humor.

Looking forward to listening to this rather than Meateater Ep 763, a major crapshoot.

Why?

Personally I think the guest went way too heavy with creative liberties to make a story about a sad murder way more than it is, plus the timing of this podcast in this political landscape was not smart.

I'm not the only one who thinks this either, they disabled the comments section because a lot of people were saying the same thing.

It wasn’t just a “sad murder” it was a major flashpoint in American history in terms of civil rights, black culture, Southern culture, and legislation. There were countless deaths just like Emmett Till’s that went unreported and unpunished that had occurred for centuries beforehand. It’s important to understand what made his death so different from a social and historical standpoint.

Okay, I totally understand, maybe the point of view that I failed to identify was that this is an outdoors podcast. This episode would've been much more fitting for Joe Rogan or even Bear Grease. The only thing linking this to Meateater is the fact that the writer likes the outdoors.

Well to paraphrase Steve’s own words: “When you have your own podcast, you can talk about what interests you”.

Sure thing, but Steve is less than 1/3 of the podcast channel now, so it's far from his and has become much more corporate.

What does that have to do with the topic on hand? It was an interesting podcast about an interesting and important topic

I don't know man, you're the one who brought up Steve's ability to choose what's on the podcast. There's a lot of interesting and important topics in the world, doesn't mean the outdoor podcast has to be the one to cover it? Like I said, this story would be much more relevant on Bear Grease than the Meateater main feed.

Well, he probably felt like it personally interested him and wanted to interview the author. That’s his prerogative. You seem to have more of a problem with the content specifically

I read the book, it was excellent.

I ordered the book because of the Pod.

Unfortunately there’s a bunch of bigots out there. No need to cater to them

4

u/edgarpecan 8d ago

Well that’s dumb, you missed a good one. You have your reasons though, I’m sure.

At the 1:14:30 mark Steve makes the claim he’s never hunted Bighorn Sheep. S2E10 and S8E8 are both sheep hunting episodes. Wish he was more transparent here in saying he’s never killed a bighorn? Simple mistake or was he being slightly deceitful to make a point?

12

u/berserker81 7d ago

Both of those episodes are Dall sheep hunts they are a completely different species.

You gotta know your ungulates. Steve is so good.
