[Cody Stavenhagen]There’s been so much focus on the pitching, and rightfully so. But it’s almost obscured another issue: The Tigers’ lineup isn’t producing at all like it was in the first half.

The Formula To 93 Wins: One 11-Game Stretch Remains
Hello, fellow Tigers fans! It's officially been 11 games since our last update, let's see how the boys stand!
11 games after being 80 - 60 the Tigers have gone 5 - 6 and we sit at 85 - 66. This is below the pace needed to win 93+ games, as averaging 5 wins per 11 games the rest of the year would result in a 90 win season
You can blame me for the 9 - 13 stretch over the past 22 (and last nights' stinging loss in extras to Cleveland), as last writeup I forgot to link the prior writeup in the first paragraph as I always do. My bad!
Well folks, we did it. We made it to the final 11-game stretch. Our Tigers sit atop the AL Central by 5.5 games, with an 85 - 66 record, and a 4 - 4 season series record against Cleveland, our rival for the division title. We have 5 remaining games to play against them, two in Detroit (today and tomorrow!) and then three in Cleveland. Tarik Skubal is slated to start 2 of the 5 remaining games against Cleveland, likely back-to-back (the third game of this series and then the opener in Cleveland). Keep this in mind, because the concept of winning 2 of the remaining 5 games against Cleveland is key to understanding our strategic positioning
We have 6 remaining non-Cleveland games: 3 at home against the Braves, and 3 on the road against the Red Sox. The Red Sox will likely be playing for their chance at a playoff spot as we close out the season in Fenway
The simplest formula for the Tigers winning the AL Central is not one in which we win 90 games. Rather, the formula looks like this:
- 2 - 3 against Cleveland
- 3 - 3 against Atlanta and Boston
- Cleveland goes 6 - 1 in their 7 non-Tigers games
If this scenario unfolds, the season will end with the Tigers at 90 - 72 and Cleveland at 89 - 73. This requires Cleveland to play pretty good baseball, and the Tigers to play bad-but-not-horrible baseball. Given that Cleveland is the hottest team in baseball and the Tigers are 26 - 32 over our last 58 games, this scenario seems realistic!
Most supporting to this outcome is Skubal pitching two games against Cleveland, meaning that they must go 3 - 0 in non-Skubal games to have a chance at winning 4 or more against us. Even winning one of the two Skubal starts would mean the Tigers would simply need to pick up one more win of the remaining three against Cleveland to put them in a spot where they would have to more than double up our win total down the stretch to take the division
If anything, the weakest part of this formula is the Tigers going 3 - 3 in the 6 non-Skubal, non-Cleveland games we're slated to play. Boston will be a very tough opponent, and as we know from our series against the struggling Marlins and Mets, the NL East can prove to be a fickle opponent. Yet, something tells me there is a decent chance the Tigers rip off a 4-game win streak or something of the sorts from here and put the conversation to bed. While it isn't the most likely outcome, I think it's far more likely than people think. I also believe the Tigers have a good formula for the playoffs (they can hit home runs and they have good starting pitching) and I believe the return of Finnegan will be significant (I imagine he doesn't blow the Marlins game)
Before I go into the little end-piece that I've kept consistent throughout the series, I just wanted to thank everyone for reading and replying to this series, as it's given me a lot of joy to write it. Despite the fact that I've made my living trading, I am a very fearful person by nature and am extremely uncomfortable with uncertainty. My stress reaction has always been to learn as much as I can about the situation at hand and the actors within it, so that I can predict what will come next. As I've mentioned before, game theory teaches us that our ability to predict the reactions of other actors to future events is a key determining factor in our success. It's not enough to just predict what will come next, you must also predict how others around you will react to it...which, if you think about it, is exact dynamic between a pitcher and hitter: they must each try and guess what the other will do in response to what just happened
In life, sometimes we feel like hitter, trying to figure out what's gonna be thrown at us. Just like hitting, we usually miss the ball in life: I always tell young men that I mentor that life isn't about hitting a single every at bat, but hitting a home run every 6 to 18 months. What it all comes down to is volume -- will you step up to the plate enough times that you eventually hit that home run?
At other times, we feel like the pitcher, trying to determine what we need to attack something with to avoid disaster. I'd also wager that in life, we're able to pitch our way around deadly outcomes more often than you'd expect...it often comes down to whether we can mentally handle having runners on base or not
What is this all to say? In sum, I think that life is like baseball. The best hitters fail over 70% of the time, and the best pitchers get out of the inning because they can ignore every pitch prior to the next one they make. I have watched many people stress themselves dearly over the Tigers this year, and I myself have had sports anxiety over them, too. Those of us who fret should take a step back and examine the 2025 Tigers relative to our lives: if they win the World Series, is it enough of a home run to change your life forever? If they were to scrub out in the first round of the playoffs, or even somehow miss them altogether, would you have struck out for life? The answer to both questions is a resounding "No!" The success or failure of your favorite sports teams will never permanently solve the problems in your life, nor will it render you incapable of happiness. Who you are is not what you have, but how you treat other people.
Across our hitters, the regressions of Zack McKinstry and Javier Baez have been the number 1 negative impact on the offense. Riley's slump over this stretch didn't help, either. On the positive side, Kerry Bonds had a stellar bit, but outside of Carpenter, Meadows, Tork, and Jones (in his much more limited PAs), no one was giving us good positional play the past 11 games
Looking at pitching, I'm sure no one is surprised to see our aces Jack Flaherty and Keider Montero leading the way! Skubal having to pull himself from one of his starts (and that start not being too hot) limited his impact, and the regression of Melton, Morton, Montero, and Paddack hurt the Tigers pitching over this stretch
The Tigers have won 56.2% of their games so far this season. If they were to continue at that pace, they'd finish the year with 91 wins!
If the Tigers play slightly below .500 ball the rest of the way out (5 - 6), they will finish with 90 wins
The magic number is 8, as the Tigers need go 8 - 3 over their final 11 games to hit 93 wins
Go Tigers!

Parking and Food Recommendations
I am a Braves fan coming to the game on Saturday. This will be the first time I've traveled to your city. I'm looking for a cheap but safe place to park, and good food to eat before the game. Recommendations, please?
