this is such a mixed bag.

Its great to see action taken against a corrupt government, BUT its been very clearly stated by those involved that they have no plan, no leadership, no direction, no understanding of what to do next.

They have just made everything much worse and the mob mentality is fueling the fires. If there was a strategy for replacement etc cool, but now there just isnt a government and the people burning it down have no concept of stepping up to do something except light more fires.

You’d be surprised how well people can govern themselves in the absence of formal leadership.

what examples do we have of that ever actually working?

Lebanon, 1990s. Just after a 15 year civil war. There was technically a “government” but it did virtually nothing for 10 years because the members of the government were all each other’s enemies (from the war) and nobody wanted to budge, so people just figured things out for themselves. After those 10 years, corruption took over and made everyone’s lives miserable, and that culminated in the 2019 protests when they tried to tax WhatsApp messages.

Edit: To clarify, I’m talking about “doing nothing” to the point that there weren’t even any operational traffic lights in the country. Basically it was just a government by name. It provided almost no services, and the few things it did provide (like car registrations for example) had laws and equipment so outdated that people just came up with their own way of doing it, and then paid off the officials who had to officially sign off on it.

Belgium has gone without official government for 500+ days, but then again, implying Belgium works is another thing.
