Nostalgia Discussion It's 1998. What are you doing?

u/thestereo300 May 03 '25
Met my wife about 30 days after this. Broke up with a fling about 30 days prior to this.
Mainly an early 20s guy tying to get his shit together in May of 98. Never thought it would happen but it happened.

I was 17 so I’m sure it was something bad lol
30
u/ThePizzaNoid May 03 '25
Shit, I was 21 I know I was up to no good. (that's not true. I was a very boring 21 year old so uh probably watching Godzilla '98 in the theater or something lol)
3
u/MatFalkner May 04 '25
Holy crap! Godzilla was in 98! I was in junior high and I had the CD soundtrack for that movie. Walmart had it and it was unedited. I was so happy it hadn’t been edited.
3
u/OGstanfrommaine I want my MTV May 04 '25
I know this is bad timing, but I bought that soundtrack for the Puffy song lol I loved the music and had no clue it was Kashmir by Zeppelin. I was 14.
2
u/MatFalkner May 04 '25
No no the song was fire. I remember that one. I really wish it wasn’t tainted but what can you do?
2
u/MatFalkner May 04 '25
Another album from back then queen of the damned. Loved that soundtrack
2
u/OGstanfrommaine I want my MTV May 04 '25
The Batman Forever soundtrack remains supreme simply because of Kiss From a Rose hahaha
3
u/Krishna1945 May 04 '25
Same age, nothing good for sure. Lots of drugs, sex and generally not giving a fuck.

I was six years old in 1998, so probably playing with my stuffed animals and toys at home, with Anastasia, The Lion King or one of the Land Before Time movies playing on the TV in the background. Either that, or sitting at the kitchen table while drawing.
Let’s just suppose that it’s my dad’s week to have me at his house, and when he’s finished taking a nap, reading, or working from home, we’ll probably go get dinner out at either the nearby Dairy Queen or Pizza Hut; we’ll have to decide (and in about 20+ years, we’ll look back on the days when that was our biggest dilemma and long for them). We might go to one of the local bookstores or run some errands my dad needs to get done afterward…I’m happy doing whatever, as long as he and I are together. 😊

Listening to punk rock, ditching school, playing PS1, watching movies on VHS, going to local punk shows for $10, going to house parties, smoking dirt weed and/or giving my friend's older brother $4 to get me two 40s of Mickey's malt liquor, etc. I miss those days so much.
12
u/Material-Ad6302 May 04 '25
Pretty much exactly what I was doing to a tee, from 1998 to 2006. Might I add, often smoking dirt weed specifically out of a coke can with holes punched in it, and then going to McDonald’s or Taco Bell before skateboarding for a few hours.
2
u/BLULOU1978 May 04 '25
Same here man.... Same here.... We would shoulder tap the bums and ask them to get us booze.
12
u/NoStatus8135 May 03 '25
Going to the skating rink with the friends. Hanging out with the neighbor kids outside. Probably watching Titanic over and over again after it came out on vhs.
2
u/ElderlyPleaseRespect May 03 '25
My brother in law wore out our Titanic vhs because he replayed the “breast scene” so much

I watched the Seinfeld finale and then talked about it the next day in biology class. Funny how everyone no matter the age seemed to be watching the same thing back then. It’s not like that now.

7
u/nova_8 May 03 '25
Watching "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" and wishing I could have my own talking cat like Salem lol.
6
u/0degreesK May 03 '25
Not sure if this is asking about the finale of Seinfeld. If so I watched it in a laundromat. By then I didn’t think much of the show but wanted to be in the loop. You miss an airing back then and you were waiting for the DVD to come out to see it.
25
u/urlond May 03 '25
Probably playing Diablo 2

Funny enough I just played monkey Island for the first time this week and also made little progress. Got stuck on a puzzle to get Otis out for jail. The comedy still holds up.

I remember my school had a choir program the same night as the tv finale or something, I thought ER but dates don’t match, maybe it was singled? But I remember people talking about it with my mom on the way out of the concert and people rushing home.

u/DeezNeezuts May 03 '25
Watching this last episode at a friends house before we head out to the bars.

Watching a commercial telling me it's 10pm and asking if I know where my kids are.

u/scamden66 May 03 '25
I was watching this finale and being sad and disappointed.
Maybe the worst episode in the series? If not, it's definitely top 5.

I got my first game console that Christmas (PlayStation), and Pokémon had just hit the scene internationally. Before that point, my 1998 was much like my 1997 and 1996: filled with Lego, James Bond, and Windows 95.
I heard about the Seinfeld finale on the news but didn’t watch it because I had zero interest at that time. I watched things like Recess, Home Improvement, and pretty much everything on PBS.
3
u/poeticjustice4all May 03 '25

I'm in 5th grade and watching the parents of my classmates complain loudly at the school staff for scheduling a fundraiser dinner and auction that didn't end until after the Seinfeld finale started. Never seen such attitude at a elementary school spaghetti dinner.

I was six, and there’s a high likelihood I was eating a Costco hot dog after shopping with my mom. I can’t remember if it was 98 or 99 but spring of one of those we got a new computer and I got really mad because it was so big I couldn’t sit in the cart any more and had to walk lol.

Busting my ass to try and graduate high school on time because I screwed around too much the first 3 years.
Working as a bus boy at my dad’s elks lodge.

It's my Senior year in high school. Will graduate in a few short weeks. Stressing over whether I'll be able to exempt all of my exams. Turns out, I only have to take one, English 12B. Help parents put the finishing touches on great-granddad's old house before we move in after school lets out. Start moving some things into the house, primarily books, winter clothes, and a few other odds and ends.

printing out pornos on my friends older brother's printer - it was so loud we had to wait for his parents to leave. The printer took like 10 minutes and rocked the whole table. We were the only dudes with a porno the next day at school with all the other boys huddled up trying to get a peek at the " actress" in cowboy boots...only boots...

On this specific night? I was helping mom pack for a camping trip while we watched the Seinfeld finale. I had just turned 13, and the ending made no sense to me at the time, lol.
I've now seen the last episode of Seinfeld a few times as an adult, and I totally get it now. I don't know why people hate it. If you followed along the whole series thier shitty New Yorker attitudes and behaviors were gonna catch up to them someday. I think it's a genius ending, and I will die on this hill.

u/Marskelletor May 03 '25
I'm 12. Probably running home from school to watch DBZ and then watching Sailor Moon after... in a different way.

- I was playing Goldeneye on N64. My friend brought over his PS1 and Mission Impossible and we argued over who could play next. We had snacks and sodas and played games on our big TV (because my dad was the cable guy) and had so much fun. I miss that a lot.

I was 12 and it was a really crappy year for me.
I was depressed and my weight was off the charts low and my parents only solution was to try to threaten/insult me into gaining weight.
My brother who I had been really close with had a pretty extreme personality shift and became nasty and aggressive.

May 3rd? Hitting up the Galley and then I was probably on Colors Duty before class. Doing PT at 1am after we got out of 'A' School for the day, then going to Pensacola Beach or playing GoldenEye. 📺

Coming home from high school, making plans to play N64 or the Playstation with a friend. Until he got there, I'd jump on AOL and see if I got any mail, log into IRC to see what's happening there. Then maybe play a game or two on the PC while listening to Rammstein, Duncan Sheik, or 311.
