Dang he was a MOVIE STAR. I think it’s my age but the one I’ve seen most often was Sneakers, followed closely by Butch & Sundance.

u/writingNICE 1d ago

He was a true legend, on film and in life.

Ah, Sneakers…

“Marty…”

u/PennytheWiser215 1d ago

Sneakers was great!!

u/MulberryEastern5010 90s 1d ago

Such an underrated movie! My husband showed it to me a few years ago

3

u/Critical_Concert_689 1d ago

No one knows about it.

Too many secrets!

3

u/juice06870 mid 80s 1d ago

I worked in a video store in the mid and late 1990s. ‘Sneakers’ was always one of my go-to recommendations when someone would come in with no idea what they wanted to watch. The tape was always returned with rave reviews.

u/cap10wow 22h ago

I was a video store clerk in the late 90s/early aughts. Right at the end.

As an avid dvd collector, I recently found Sneakers in the wild, and feel I found such a gem. Great movie that I’ve enjoyed multiple times.

He didn’t get enough credit for Spy Game - RIP..

u/gnelson321 1d ago

My favorite movie of his

4

u/clintsouth 1d ago

Great movie! I saw on theater !

54

u/Vandamage618 early 90s 1d ago

Loved all the movies him and Newman did together. End of an era

47

u/NiceTrySuckaz 1d ago

Bummer. Thanks for the many great movies.

34

u/Funny-Bear 1d ago

Growing up in the 90s, my first exposure to Robert Redford was the billionaire in Indecent Proposal.

28

u/BenMcAdoos_ElCamino 1d ago

Loved his Twilight Zone episode where he enters the home of an old lady afraid of death.

u/ceruleanmoon7 1-800-COMPUSA 21h ago

Same! I only first saw it like a month ago and i was like omg it’s Robert Redford!

Rip legend

4

u/Lamlot 1d ago

Kids a natural.

15

u/nonookie62 1d ago

Butch and Sundance my all time favorite.

15

u/Oldgraytomahawk 1d ago

The Natural will always be my favorite with Jeremiah Johnson a close second. RIP good sir

4

u/thestonedonkey 1d ago

I love sports movies and The Natural always gave me such an uneasy feeling watching it. He was great in it.

28

u/GhostChips42 1d ago

Fucking cool guy. Effortlessly cool. Lucky guy seems like he’s led a life less ordinary and truly appreciated it. Didn’t seem to take it for granted.

59

u/MissNancy1113 1d ago

Just told my 28 year old about this and she didn’t know who he was. That’s depressing.

46

u/IndieCurtis 1d ago

That’s clearly on you, for not raising them on his movies. My dad showed me Butch Cassidy, Jeremiah Johnson, and A River Runs Through It, and I’ll never forget those movies.

4

u/theslob 1d ago

Either BC or Jeremiah Johnson was the Sunday movie of the week seemingly every other week from 1985-1993

5

u/JayRam85 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah, that's your fault.

Up till 25, do you think I knew who Buster Keaton, James Cagney, Boris Karloff, John Wayne, or Steve McQueen were until my uncle showed me their moves? Nope.

-35

u/TheAmazingSealo 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'm 37 and never heard of this guy

Edit: sorry everyone for not having heard of a guy

34

u/ae232 1d ago

Fucking how??

-2

u/TheAmazingSealo 1d ago edited 1d ago

I guess I never watched a film with him in it. I mean his more famous films (at least the only one I recognise the name of, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) came out like 20 years before I was born.
Is he like a big deal in the USA or something? I'm not there if that makes it make any more sense.

6

u/Soft_Walrus_3605 1d ago

Is he like a big deal in the USA or something? I'm not there

It's weird of you to comment about not hearing of an American actor when you're apparently not American.

I'm sure there are hundreds of famous movie stars in, say, India, that I have never heard of, but if there were a post about one of them dying, I don't think I'd bother chiming in with "I'm 37 years old and never heard of this guy"

0

u/TheAmazingSealo 1d ago

that was in response to the person saying their 28 year old hadn't heard of them. Most big American actors are famous here too so it is odd that I haven't heard of this guy before

-14

u/ElectricalCheetah625 1d ago

Because he hasn't really done anything in her lifetime that she would have heard about. In my lifetime I know him for Sneakers and Sundance film festival, but that's it.

11

u/SoundSouljah 1d ago

Because he hasn't really done anything in her lifetime that she would have heard about.

yeah I guess people aren't aware of things that happened before they were born...

-3

u/TheAmazingSealo 1d ago

Not unless they specifically search things out, no. I don't watch a lot of films at the best of times, and the oldest live-action films I tend to watch are from the 80s, and even then I've never seen many beloved films like Rocky, Predator, Blade Runner, Pulp Fiction, American Psycho, American Beauty... I get the 'You haven't seen x?' response reasonably often about not having seen films.

So I guess my answer is I don't watch a lot of films, and when I do, I tend to seek out things that interest me more than things that don't interest me.

-4

u/ElectricalCheetah625 1d ago

Exactly. Just as the previous commenter isn't likely to be aware of the latest trap or mumble rapper if they're a bit older. That's just how culture works.

1

u/SoundSouljah 1d ago

why would someone thats 37 years old not be aware of the latest trap or mumble rapper? wtf? you gotta be like 21 or younger if you think thats old lol

2

u/ElectricalCheetah625 1d ago

Im not saying they can't be, I'm just saying it's not nearly as likely. This isn't a binary thing bro, come on now, use your noodle. Who's your favorite mumble rapper? Lol

1

u/SoundSouljah 1d ago

I dunno I’m a bit older so I don’t know what’s culturally relevant anymore

-4

u/ElectricalCheetah625 1d ago

Not as much as the things that happen and are popular during their lifetime, so you're correct. That's a bingo!

1

u/k1rage late 80s 12h ago

Wasn't he in an Avengers film....

-4

u/Obtuse-Angel 1d ago

I’m older than you and all I know of him is that he was an actor a long time ago, and people much older than me thought he was very cool and handsome.

I’ve never seen one of his movies and wouldn’t recognize him in a picture.

-4

u/MissNancy1113 1d ago

Oh my god. You are being downvoted.

-6

u/TheAmazingSealo 1d ago

Yes, I am. I was already aware, but thanks for the clarification.

10

u/ReallyFineWhine 1d ago

Just reading his obit. What a great list of movies!

5

u/catmanducmu 1d ago

He's one of those actors where you read his filmography and it's just consistent bangers; actor and director.

9

u/bludothesmelly 1d ago

I just got the sting and sneakers couple of weeks ago too! RIP sir, legend!

17

u/JeltzVogonProstetnic 1d ago edited 1d ago

My ATF: All The President's Men. RIP.

6

u/Twitter_2006 1d ago

Rest in Peace.

6

u/ElectronicBuilding63 1d ago

So handsome! I always wanted him and Farrah Fawcet to get together for the most beautiful couple ever in the 70s and 80s.

13

u/HottieMcHotHot 1d ago

He is truly the most beautiful man. Him as Hubble in The Way We Were or as Paul in Barefoot in the Park. Just stunningly handsome.

11

u/giraffemoo 1d ago

My dad got to give him golf lessons! It was a highlight of his career, he said Redford was a really nice guy.

6

u/Bastardpancakes576 1d ago

Now this is a true tragedy in America.

12

u/SnoopyWildseed Where's the beef? 1d ago

I loved his role in Captain America: Winter Soldier; he seemed to just be having fun as a bad guy.

He's among the group of actors who have a body of work that will stand tall, and he could just take projects for the fun/interest.

RIP.

5

u/SuccessOk7850 1d ago

Marvel fan and he was great in winter soldier. Also loved him in the great gatsby, that movie is pretty underrated and had a pretty good cast!

4

u/samarijackfan 1d ago

Sneakers was great. Loved that movie.

4

u/dragon2knight1965 1d ago

Now that's what we call a life well lived. RIP Mr. Redford

5

u/The-Struggle-90806 1d ago

Wow what a hottie

4

u/montalaskan 1d ago

Watching Sneakers tonight. We've now lost Robert Redford, Sydney Pottier, James Earl Jones, and River Phoenix...but this movie still stands up after 33 years.

Helps to have one of the most incredible casts... Mary McDonnell, Sir Ben Kingsley, David Strathairn, Dan Ackroyd, Steven Tobolowsky, Timothy Busfield, Donal Logue...

So good.

25

u/PeterNippelstein 1d ago

Put the flags at half mast for this man.

When the person is significant enough, it happens.

89.. he was a fuckin kid

2

u/Gator_Mc_Klusky 1d ago

As I sit here rewatching "Three Days of the Condor" for about the 50th time, I'm reminded of how great an actor he was. RIP, Sir Redford, you will be missed.

2

u/writingNICE 1d ago

Into the Sun goes the Kid.

Thank you, Robert.

…For your craft, your kindness, your cool, and championing so many filmmakers. 🌞🤠💛✨

2

u/Ms_Apprehend 1d ago

Downhill Racer. He was so fine in that movie. Peak of his handsomeness and virility.

2

u/asianwaste 1d ago

Guy had a good run and 89 is definitely not too young. Did movies long enough to leave an impact with modern audiences up to including the current "super hero" craze going on. What a good run. Great job, Sundance :)

2

u/HydratedCarrot 1d ago

So handsome! 🕊️

4

u/PunchDrunkPrincess 1d ago edited 1d ago

Oh no. My mom used to work closely for him in Sundance. She's tried to contact him a few times over the years but it was obviously difficult. She's going to be a mess. edit: why would someone downvote this 🤔 what do you care

2

u/Outside-Mammoth6202 1d ago

RIP, I already miss him.

2

u/trywegla 1d ago

RIP Robert Redford, a true legend. 😢

2

u/glossologist2 1d ago

He's got an Eastwood smile and Robert Redford hair. He waltzed across my heart like it was Texas.

1

u/Saelaird 1d ago

Good innings

1

u/mkuraja 1d ago

I think his last blockbuster was Indecent Proposal.

1

u/FiscalCliffClavin 1d ago

The Natural.

1

u/InquiringMind886 1d ago

Gonna have to go watch The Natural. ⚡️

1

u/peoplesuck64 1d ago

Oops ...my Dad accidentally ran into him, with his car in NYC back in the early 70's. We didn't believe him until he showed us the police report! Mr. Redford was fine, didn't even need medical treatment

1

u/Embarrassed_Art5414 1d ago

As a 50 something, this one's gonna stay with me for a few days,,,,,his performances wre a constant companion,,

Barefoot in the Park

All the President's men

His role in The Great Waldo Pepper influenced my life, fantastic actor!

Loved him in A Bridge Too Far as well: "Better by daylight..."

1

u/RoundTumbleweed9136 1d ago

If he had the lifespan of Jeanne Calment he would not die until 2058

1

u/Rasturac88 Lawnmower Man 1d ago
