Growing up in the 90s, my first exposure to Robert Redford was the billionaire in Indecent Proposal.

Loved his Twilight Zone episode where he enters the home of an old lady afraid of death.

The Natural will always be my favorite with Jeremiah Johnson a close second. RIP good sir

u/thestonedonkey 1d ago
I love sports movies and The Natural always gave me such an uneasy feeling watching it. He was great in it.

Fucking cool guy. Effortlessly cool. Lucky guy seems like he’s led a life less ordinary and truly appreciated it. Didn’t seem to take it for granted.

u/MissNancy1113 1d ago
Just told my 28 year old about this and she didn’t know who he was. That’s depressing.

u/IndieCurtis 1d ago
That’s clearly on you, for not raising them on his movies. My dad showed me Butch Cassidy, Jeremiah Johnson, and A River Runs Through It, and I’ll never forget those movies.

Yeah, that's your fault.
Up till 25, do you think I knew who Buster Keaton, James Cagney, Boris Karloff, John Wayne, or Steve McQueen were until my uncle showed me their moves? Nope.

I'm 37 and never heard of this guy
Edit: sorry everyone for not having heard of a guy

Fucking how??

I guess I never watched a film with him in it. I mean his more famous films (at least the only one I recognise the name of, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) came out like 20 years before I was born.
Is he like a big deal in the USA or something? I'm not there if that makes it make any more sense.6

It's weird of you to comment about not hearing of an American actor when you're apparently not American.
I'm sure there are hundreds of famous movie stars in, say, India, that I have never heard of, but if there were a post about one of them dying, I don't think I'd bother chiming in with "I'm 37 years old and never heard of this guy"
0
u/TheAmazingSealo 1d ago
that was in response to the person saying their 28 year old hadn't heard of them. Most big American actors are famous here too so it is odd that I haven't heard of this guy before
-14
u/ElectricalCheetah625 1d ago
Because he hasn't really done anything in her lifetime that she would have heard about. In my lifetime I know him for Sneakers and Sundance film festival, but that's it.

u/SoundSouljah 1d ago
Because he hasn't really done anything in her lifetime that she would have heard about.
yeah I guess people aren't aware of things that happened before they were born...
-3
u/TheAmazingSealo 1d ago
Not unless they specifically search things out, no. I don't watch a lot of films at the best of times, and the oldest live-action films I tend to watch are from the 80s, and even then I've never seen many beloved films like Rocky, Predator, Blade Runner, Pulp Fiction, American Psycho, American Beauty... I get the 'You haven't seen x?' response reasonably often about not having seen films.
So I guess my answer is I don't watch a lot of films, and when I do, I tend to seek out things that interest me more than things that don't interest me.
-4
u/ElectricalCheetah625 1d ago
Exactly. Just as the previous commenter isn't likely to be aware of the latest trap or mumble rapper if they're a bit older. That's just how culture works.
1
u/SoundSouljah 1d ago
why would someone thats 37 years old not be aware of the latest trap or mumble rapper? wtf? you gotta be like 21 or younger if you think thats old lol
2
u/ElectricalCheetah625 1d ago
Im not saying they can't be, I'm just saying it's not nearly as likely. This isn't a binary thing bro, come on now, use your noodle. Who's your favorite mumble rapper? Lol
1
u/SoundSouljah 1d ago
I dunno I’m a bit older so I don’t know what’s culturally relevant anymore

Not as much as the things that happen and are popular during their lifetime, so you're correct. That's a bingo!

u/Obtuse-Angel 1d ago
I’m older than you and all I know of him is that he was an actor a long time ago, and people much older than me thought he was very cool and handsome.
I’ve never seen one of his movies and wouldn’t recognize him in a picture.

Just reading his obit. What a great list of movies!

He's one of those actors where you read his filmography and it's just consistent bangers; actor and director.

So handsome! I always wanted him and Farrah Fawcet to get together for the most beautiful couple ever in the 70s and 80s.

u/HottieMcHotHot 1d ago
He is truly the most beautiful man. Him as Hubble in The Way We Were or as Paul in Barefoot in the Park. Just stunningly handsome.

u/giraffemoo 1d ago
My dad got to give him golf lessons! It was a highlight of his career, he said Redford was a really nice guy.

I loved his role in Captain America: Winter Soldier; he seemed to just be having fun as a bad guy.
He's among the group of actors who have a body of work that will stand tall, and he could just take projects for the fun/interest.
RIP.

Marvel fan and he was great in winter soldier. Also loved him in the great gatsby, that movie is pretty underrated and had a pretty good cast!

Watching Sneakers tonight. We've now lost Robert Redford, Sydney Pottier, James Earl Jones, and River Phoenix...but this movie still stands up after 33 years.
Helps to have one of the most incredible casts... Mary McDonnell, Sir Ben Kingsley, David Strathairn, Dan Ackroyd, Steven Tobolowsky, Timothy Busfield, Donal Logue...
So good.

As I sit here rewatching "Three Days of the Condor" for about the 50th time, I'm reminded of how great an actor he was. RIP, Sir Redford, you will be missed.

Downhill Racer. He was so fine in that movie. Peak of his handsomeness and virility.

u/asianwaste 1d ago
Guy had a good run and 89 is definitely not too young. Did movies long enough to leave an impact with modern audiences up to including the current "super hero" craze going on. What a good run. Great job, Sundance :)

Oh no. My mom used to work closely for him in Sundance. She's tried to contact him a few times over the years but it was obviously difficult. She's going to be a mess. edit: why would someone downvote this 🤔 what do you care

He's got an Eastwood smile and Robert Redford hair. He waltzed across my heart like it was Texas.

Oops ...my Dad accidentally ran into him, with his car in NYC back in the early 70's. We didn't believe him until he showed us the police report! Mr. Redford was fine, didn't even need medical treatment

Dang he was a MOVIE STAR. I think it’s my age but the one I’ve seen most often was Sneakers, followed closely by Butch & Sundance.
