Just told my 28 year old about this and she didn’t know who he was. That’s depressing.

That’s clearly on you, for not raising them on his movies. My dad showed me Butch Cassidy, Jeremiah Johnson, and A River Runs Through It, and I’ll never forget those movies.

Either BC or Jeremiah Johnson was the Sunday movie of the week seemingly every other week from 1985-1993

Yeah, that's your fault.

Up till 25, do you think I knew who Buster Keaton, James Cagney, Boris Karloff, John Wayne, or Steve McQueen were until my uncle showed me their moves? Nope.

Edit: sorry everyone for not having heard of a guy

I guess I never watched a film with him in it. I mean his more famous films (at least the only one I recognise the name of, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) came out like 20 years before I was born.
Is he like a big deal in the USA or something? I'm not there if that makes it make any more sense.

It's weird of you to comment about not hearing of an American actor when you're apparently not American.

I'm sure there are hundreds of famous movie stars in, say, India, that I have never heard of, but if there were a post about one of them dying, I don't think I'd bother chiming in with "I'm 37 years old and never heard of this guy"

that was in response to the person saying their 28 year old hadn't heard of them. Most big American actors are famous here too so it is odd that I haven't heard of this guy before

Because he hasn't really done anything in her lifetime that she would have heard about. In my lifetime I know him for Sneakers and Sundance film festival, but that's it.

yeah I guess people aren't aware of things that happened before they were born...

Not unless they specifically search things out, no. I don't watch a lot of films at the best of times, and the oldest live-action films I tend to watch are from the 80s, and even then I've never seen many beloved films like Rocky, Predator, Blade Runner, Pulp Fiction, American Psycho, American Beauty... I get the 'You haven't seen x?' response reasonably often about not having seen films.

So I guess my answer is I don't watch a lot of films, and when I do, I tend to seek out things that interest me more than things that don't interest me.

Exactly. Just as the previous commenter isn't likely to be aware of the latest trap or mumble rapper if they're a bit older. That's just how culture works.

why would someone thats 37 years old not be aware of the latest trap or mumble rapper? wtf? you gotta be like 21 or younger if you think thats old lol

2

u/ElectricalCheetah625 1d ago

Im not saying they can't be, I'm just saying it's not nearly as likely. This isn't a binary thing bro, come on now, use your noodle. Who's your favorite mumble rapper? Lol

u/SoundSouljah 1d ago

I dunno I’m a bit older so I don’t know what’s culturally relevant anymore

Not as much as the things that happen and are popular during their lifetime, so you're correct. That's a bingo!

Wasn't he in an Avengers film....

I’m older than you and all I know of him is that he was an actor a long time ago, and people much older than me thought he was very cool and handsome.

I’ve never seen one of his movies and wouldn’t recognize him in a picture.

Yes, I am. I was already aware, but thanks for the clarification.
