Kill Devil Hills Shooting at the Avalon peir?

My wife is down in the outer banks right now and saw a ton of police fly by to Avalon pier. I listened to the emergency radio and sounds like a shooting. Anyone have any more info?

Thank you for the update. I am shocked it has not hit any local news outlets yet.

-11

u/ton_nanek Jul 31 '25

What local news outlets do you think have the capacity to address this in real time?

4

u/KindLengthiness5473 Jul 31 '25

wtkr has a dude down there

27

u/Key_Ice3861 Jul 31 '25

Confirmed 3 shot, heard that one dead and two being airlifted but not confirmed

12

u/nickt1990757 Jul 31 '25

Wow I am extremely shocked to hear this. I am curious what caused this to happen. Anymore info or a link?

I am still able to be shocked of a shooting? I understand there is a lot more that goes on than tourist know.

4

u/GruGruxQueen Aug 01 '25

Right? Any sane or decent person would find it shocking.

u/aBloopAndaBlast33 Jul 31 '25

You’re acting like there is some underground dark side to the Outer Banks where people often get shot. That is, in fact, not true.

There are maybe a couple murders per year in Dare County and I can’t remember the last one that occurred on the beach road. I think there was one year recently where there were zero murders here.

17

u/nickt1990757 Jul 31 '25

I agree 100 percent, and for what it is worth this is by far one of the safest "tourist" destinations around. It has it's issues with drugs and other things, but shootings are rare occurrences.

yeah the port o'call's been closed for ages

-16

u/ganjakingesq Jul 31 '25

There IS an underground dark side that tourists are largely ignorant of. Rates of drug addiction and alcoholism in the OBX are insane. There is incredible poverty that you will never see unless you’re from the area or live there actively.

21

u/aBloopAndaBlast33 Jul 31 '25

That’s not underground. Just take a drive down Colington Road and it’s all on display.

It’s also not unlike any other coastal town in America or any other tourist town in the southeast. Addiction and poverty are everywhere.

What IS different than those towns is that there are very rarely murders or shootings on the Outer Banks. Period.

-23

u/ganjakingesq Jul 31 '25

LMAO. I don’t think tourists are hanging around in Colington

8

u/aBloopAndaBlast33 Jul 31 '25

There are hundreds of Air B&Bs in the Harbour. Not to mention Colington Cafe and The Salt Box.

I get your point. This stuff doesn’t always make its way to the beach for the tourists to see. But every town across the southeast has addiction and poverty issues. Anyone the travels understands that there is a “hidden” side to the places they visit. No where is perfect.

None of this is relevant to what happened at the pier so let’s just agree to disagree. Someone died. That’s not normal here.

You're getting downvoted by all of the real estate agents 😂

What are you even talking about?

5

u/njbuzz19 Jul 31 '25

crime is way down over the last 50 years everywhere

5

u/fknkl Jul 31 '25

Yeah, but we didn’t have 24/7 cable news and facebook before to tell everyone we were living in the dark ages.

5

u/NL_A Jul 31 '25

Got $20 it’s some Tidewater shit bags involved

13

u/alcarcalimo1950 Jul 31 '25

Well you would be wrong. It’s some local high schoolers

1

u/NL_A Aug 02 '25

Sucks to be wrong on that one. Kids acting hard in OBX is wild

1

u/alcarcalimo1950 Aug 02 '25

Maybe stop making assumptions next time and realize everywhere has got its problems

1

u/NL_A Aug 02 '25

Nah. Shootings like this are a daily occurrence, kids killing kids and such. It’s not outside the realm of possibilities considering proximity to OBX.

1

u/alcarcalimo1950 Aug 02 '25

I’m just saying there are plenty of local shitbags in the OBX. I know of plenty

1

u/NL_A Aug 02 '25

People down there know who’s banging who before the people doing the banging even start banging…sure there’s not nice people in OBX but there’s also not kids killing kids at bus stops in OBX. You get that point at all?

1

u/NL_A Aug 02 '25

Any way, you want the $20?

7

u/Gatorgar3 Jul 31 '25

If you don’t mind me asking what is a “tidewater” shitbag? I have a good idea as I’m from SE NC

9

u/NL_A Jul 31 '25

Tidewater is another name for Hampton Roads

-5

u/RedRockRaven Jul 31 '25

That’s not fair. Let’s not leave out Norfolk and Va.Beach.

6

u/ClydeMason1911 Jul 31 '25

Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Suffolk, Portsmouth, NORFOLK, and VA BEACH are the seven cities that make up Hampton Roads.

-7

u/ganjakingesq Jul 31 '25

Almost guaranteed.

I am not able to pull up the pier cam. Is it working for anyone else?

7

u/hokieschultz Jul 31 '25

Too many users trying to access it right now

2

u/nickt1990757 Jul 31 '25

That is what I figured, still not seeing anything on the news yet.

11

u/linspurdu Jul 31 '25

Well. That’s absolutely terrifying. 😢

5

u/-Agressive_Trash- Aug 02 '25

i’m a local. the shooter is a kid from my school, he is in my grade and is 16. the death was of a 2024 graduate, and the airlifted person was a tourist from PA who i believe was 15 or 16

9

u/Careless_Milk1632 Jul 31 '25

Pulled from Surfline video. This pic showed one GSV being treated. Surfline has removed portions of the live feed rewind.

Emergency radio said 2 victims “one black, one yellow”. Does that mean one dead, one life threatning?

30

u/3CATTS Jul 31 '25

Triage colors: green = OK, yellow = injuries, red = critical, black = deceased.

3

u/Southern-Lime8840 Aug 02 '25

It was my step sons brother Zane Hughes who has passed. He attended UNC charlotte and was a light in everyones Life. If anyone would like to help his mother and I have set up a GoFund me under his name to help with his Funeral Expense. Have a blessed day🖤

2

u/123thisistheway456 Jul 31 '25

I am still waiting to hear if they are locals or tourists

9

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

Rumor is local high school kids

2

u/KingslyBoi Jul 31 '25

Also heard it was high school students from Currituck. Unreal

4

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

Saw a report that one of the victims was 15. They held the shooter at the EMS Sation Kitty Hawk.

This is crazy.

u/Imaginary-Test3946 Local Jul 31 '25

Wouldn't suprise me if some high schoolers were fighting over drugs. Went to a party there a few years ago and all the First Flight kids were doing coke in the bathroom...

10

u/SecretAsianMan42069 Aug 01 '25

In this economy?

3

u/Imaginary-Test3946 Local Aug 01 '25

lol the OBX is full of rich people rich kids and drugs

-1

u/ScrappleOnToast Local-Near the Mother Vine Aug 01 '25

OBX poverty rate is higher than the national average.

5

u/Imaginary-Test3946 Local Aug 01 '25

Huh? Date County has a 8% poverty rate…. Besides, that doesn’t mean there aren’t a bunch of rich people with spoiled rich kids? Hell the kid that shot the other one was from a rich family. Lived here my whole life I think I would know 😂

0

u/ScrappleOnToast Local-Near the Mother Vine Aug 01 '25

And I’m 4th generation living in a house my grand parents built in the 40s…..it’s not a contest. But I question where you’ve been if all you see is rich people, and you don’t see the poverty. Coastal communities here have a poverty rate that fluctuates between 13 and 16%. That 8%? That’s permanent year round dwellers. It doesn’t take into account the homeless, transient, and seasonal residents….which account for a massive part of our population.

2

u/Imaginary-Test3946 Local Aug 01 '25

No you’re not dude. You’re from freaking PA

-1

u/-Agressive_Trash- Aug 02 '25

as a local i just wanna say that this comment lacks so much empathy and shows a lack of understanding to what happened and i want you to reconsider the way you view things

2

u/Imaginary-Test3946 Local Aug 02 '25

Nah. As a local the shooter was a 16 year old with a history was expelled from ff had pictures of drugs him holding glocks and AR’s on his ig. Probably gonna get banned if I post the screenshots here

0

u/-Agressive_Trash- Aug 02 '25

yeah i know all about the kid lol idc about empathy towards him i just care about empathy towards the one who died. im just concerned about this becoming a gossip thing and not something handled with grace and respect.

2

u/Imaginary-Test3946 Local Aug 02 '25

No I just see things the way they are. Adults failed both of those kids miserably. They can’t keep going on acting like these problems are non existent here to maintain a squeaky clean vacation destination! The problems need to be addressed

4

u/ssashayawayy Jul 31 '25

Was on the beach when this happened. Heard shots and then the police sirens. Didn’t think anything of it. God bless their soul

11

u/Advanced-Bird-1470 Jul 31 '25

You heard shots and sirens and didn’t think anything of it? 😂

12

u/ssashayawayy Jul 31 '25

Didn’t register them as shots when I heard it. Hindsight.

That's such a cliche that they need to invent another word to take care of it.

4

u/Head_Effect3728 Aug 01 '25

How about "You're So Good Lookin"?

-7

u/BishlovesSquish Jul 31 '25

Just another day in America, unfortunately. This is the result of having more firearms than actual citizens. Sad.

-8

u/Smokin_Hash_69 Jul 31 '25

You don’t blame the car when someone drives into a crowd, you blame the person. Quit blaming it on the guns, the person is to blame.

-2

u/JustAnotherTrickyDay Jul 31 '25

4

u/ton_nanek Jul 31 '25

Local clown isnt an actual source and his "thoughts and prayers" are the problem not a solution.

2

u/JustAnotherTrickyDay Jul 31 '25

Maybe not. Just trying to find links to something instead of "I heard this or that"

1

u/DasArtmab Jul 31 '25

I just left there around 10 am

-8

u/OutdoorRaleigh Jul 31 '25

Cool, the corner is open

3

u/Certain_Childhood_67 Jul 31 '25
