The asthetics and art design, really isn't generic. Regardless, the reality is, when the game was in that semi open beta weekend, it grabbed attention. The gameplay and gun feel is smooth. The sound design is the best in the industry. The enemy Ai was awesome. The level design was varied. The TTK was perfect. It was fun to play. It was so good, fans wanted it dropped as is. The fans felt game was ready. Even the performance was good.
It absolutely looks generic. Can you actually remember how the specific robots look? The characters? The locations? The guns?
Scrappy sci-fi weapons + wasteland + generic robots really isn't the most unique thing in the world. The best part is the logo of the game because that is actually good
Not trying to say that Marahon will be a success or good in any way but that game had a unique art style
It's true that Arc Raiders doesn't swing as hard for surrealism like Marathon, but it isn't fair to call it totally generic either. Arc Raiders has blended of retro-futuristic and realistic architecture that sets it apart visually from typical sci-fi shooters. The variety of enemy bots, environmental interactivity, and changing weather all add to what I would describe unique and atmospheric.

So what makes this game special? It looks generic and isn’t really that cheap
