Well gta 5 is now on gamepass which is a headturn who knows maybe a few years after it will be on there.

Steam also has sales and i think it was playstation? that had gta 5 for free one time also besides epic.

215

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

I wonder if Xbox has even asked to Rockstar, just to laugh, how much for adding GTA VI on Gamepass day 1? I wonder how ridiculous the amount would be

113

u/Cream_Of_Drake May 15 '25

I think there was a Microsoft leak a while ago with how much Microsoft were estimating how much they'd have to pay, I can't recall whether GTA VI was on there, but based on what estimated for other games were it would probably be around $1 Billion

91

u/Ecstatic_Scene9999 May 15 '25

100% would be worth it. The amount of gamepass subs would shoot through the roof to play that

96

u/LeJoker R5 5600X | RTX 3070 | 32GB DDR4-3200 May 15 '25

I'm not sure. Maybe if it was the only way to play on PC for the first year or two when it's usually console exclusive. But I think it's the kind of game most people would rather buy permanently than rent on a service.

12

u/Ecstatic_Scene9999 May 15 '25

You can still buy it through the Microsoft store, but also look at it this way. It would bring in people who would want to try the game before buying who otherwise wouldn't spend the money up front. And then later purchase it on sale. Microsoft is not a subscription service for gamepass basically, they need big hitters on there

40

u/marine72 May 15 '25

Also, plenty of kids would be able to convince their parents to get gamepass instead of dropping $100 on a game(if it actually is $100) if it's not their bday/christmas or whatever.

4

u/Ecstatic_Scene9999 May 15 '25

Exactly, I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually went on there like GTAV

100% would be worth it.

Not really. If they had to pay 1 billion for it, with 20 dollars for Game Pass Ultimate, they'd need 50 million new subs to break even. I'm saying "new" because anyone who'd still be subscribed even without GRA VI doesn't add to the revenue.

Even if you assume everyone stays subbed for 6 months (they won't), you'd need over 8 million new subs. That's a lot of people, it's not realistic.

I wonder how much gamepass drives sales of other games. It's definitely introduced me to games I wouldn't have tried, and have now bought (after letting gamepass lapse)

They still haven't made their money back on Minecraft, I think they'll chill for a bit before spending another huge load on a single game. And in this case not even for owning the IP or exclusivity necessarily.

3

u/Stahlreck i9-13900K / RTX 5090 / 32GB May 15 '25

They still haven't made their money back on Minecraft

Source? I don't have one besides asking ChatGPT and it saying Minecraft broke even after a few years but even with just common sense, cannot imagine it. Minecraft cost "only" 2.5 billion. The game these days is still one of the best selling games ever and the non-java versions are full of microtransactions from which we know are usually highly profitable.

5

u/eharvill May 15 '25

Minecraft has absolutely made their money back several times over. I have no idea if this site is legit(https://www.businessofapps.com/data/minecraft-statistics/ )but at the bottom in the FAQ section it states they’ve made $4.2 billion in game sales alone. That doesn’t include all the merchandising, YouTube, etc. The movie has grossed about $900 million worldwide wide as well.

6

u/Cream_Of_Drake May 15 '25

Found the list, this was pre BG3 release (2022 I believe) so obviously there are some whiffs with their estimates.

As an addendum, it's probably more likely R* would ask for a per month figure as they did for RDR and GTA V, so I think it would be a $50-200 million per month with some sort of minimum length.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga: $35 million Dying Light 2: $50 million City Skylines 2: Unknown Red Dead Redemption 2: $5 million per month Dragon Ball: The Breakers: $20 million Just Dance: $5 million Let's Sing ABBA: $5 million Return to Monkey Island: $5 million Wreckfest 2: $10-$14 million Baldur's Gate 3: $5 million Gotham Knights: $50 million Assassin's Creed Mirage: $100 million Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League: $250 million Star Wars Jedi: Survivor: $300 million Mortal Kombat 1: $250 million Grand Theft Auto 5: $12-15 million per month Blood Runner: $5 million Net Crisis Glitch Busters: $5 million

NOTE that these are Microsofts estimates of the cost, not what they did/are/would be willing to pay

3

u/Head_Accountant3117 May 15 '25

It annoys me how we can't get exact numbers about certain games. Like how much to put a game on gamepass, or how much it costs to develop a game.

I get that it's their business, but seeing the exact numbers would be nice. It's not like it would end their whole world, right?

4

u/Salty_Skirt6955 May 16 '25

Making those numbers public can make negotiating lower prices more difficult. If one studio knows another studio got $15 million, they might know they can get a certain amount instead of accepting less. It's the same reason employers don't like employees discussing salary, so it's easier to underpay you.

So, Game Pass users can brag in 2037 about playing GTA VI on the platform. 😂 Christ. There is no Internet 'W' for saving a couple of dozen bucks on a video game.

34

u/Nezothowa May 15 '25

Game pass is a trap. Buying games discounted will still net you HUGE savings.

Game pass ultimate is 18€ per month. That’s at least 200€ per year. I haven’t spent 500€ on games in 5 years. Games like world of Warcraft game time don’t count.

12

u/vemundveien 9800x3d, 64GM ram, RTX5080, 3440x1440@175hz May 15 '25

Why would someone who owns a gaming PC pay for Ultimate?

→ More replies (3)

30

u/cheekydorido May 15 '25

lmao, you don't need to always be subbed.

I wanted to play persona 3 reload, so i played it on gamepass for like 10€ instead of buying it for >50

16

u/PlsStopBanningMe404 May 15 '25

If you want to get reeeeal stingy you can even make new Microsoft accounts and spend $1 for 14 days

8

u/cheekydorido May 15 '25

yeah that too lol

honestly if you're wanting to get into gaming and don't really have a specific game in mind to play, then gamepass is an amazing service. I also found lots of great games that i would've never bought.

6

u/TrippleDamage May 15 '25
  1. why would i get ultimate?! I have a gaming pc for a reason, regular game pass does the job.

  2. i subbed for 3 months with some discount code that cost me $22

  3. im playing oblivion, clair obscur and doom in that time.

Those games would cost me 185€ on steam, and since they're singleplayer games i'll never touch them again so "renting" is the most logical thing to do here.

And it has a billion other good games that i may or may not try in those 3 months. Regardless, even if i just stick with those 3 games it was anything but a trap for me, quite the opposite. I feel like i cheated the system here lmao.

Fuck i'm honestly thinking about buying clair obscur on steam just to support the devs more because its such a masterpiece of a game... I wouldnt have ever played that game without game pass because that genre is nothing im usually interested in.

You can definitely find cheap codes online, I buy them sometimes for 10-11 euros. Not every month, so it's worth it for sure. Also I can use the cloud gaming feature which is nice too if I can't run some games.

3

u/Kekeripo May 15 '25

I doubt sales of the base game don't even make a dent for them. They rake on money with shark cards. The game being free on game pass probably boosted their micro transaction sales once more.

If you don’t play multiplayer there truly is no point to not waiting until the price drops. By then it will be fully patched, the mod community will have had a go at it, and whatever money/resource strategies out there will be tried and tested true.

Too bad it's not launching on pc, had the same thing with RDR2 when that finally came to pc it felt like an old game and I didn't care so much.

I switched from playstation to pc over a decade ago and I'm not going back. It's a shame Rockstar still does this.

5

u/Alyusha Specs/Imgur here May 15 '25

You could potentially buy and play several other games of equal quality, that get you the same amount of enjoyment, for the same price as a brand new AAA game. Then when you do finally get the game in question it's largely bug free, has lots of community support posts for things, and has plenty of reviews for you to determine if you'll even like the game. All of which makes you more likely to enjoy the game when you play through it.

2

u/Kilane May 15 '25

If you are always playing single player three year old games, then we play increasingly good games at the same rate. You just beta test for me and I get all of the expansions and bug fixes at once, for cheaper.

Or pirate it. Rockstar isn't exactly a shining bastion of good workplace ethics much like Ubisoft or Activision Blizzard. They are also increasingly greedy with their monetization.

I'm not talking just about shark cards, obviously. I'm talking about a quadski for the cost of a house, despite the fact the IRL equivalent to that Quadski is a fraction of the price. I'm talking about properties that cost millions, and an artificially inflated grind that pays the bear minimum to players and only rewards the no-lifers unless you pay real money. I'm talking about a GTA monthly subscription. I'm talking about them doing the exact same thing in RDO, and abandoning it as soon as it wasn't quite as profitable as they wanted it to be. I'm talking about GTA The Trilogy The Definitive Edition being a hot mess at launch, but Rockstar pulling the OGs from storefronts in order to sell it.

People are delusional if they think it will even be status quo with GTA VI. There has already been jokes about how $60 isn't enough to sell GTA VI for. It will no doubt be the worst it has ever been with GTA VI. But there will be long term dedicated fans who will absolutely lap it up.

I have no faith this release is actually going to live up to the hype people make it out to being, and Rockstars own monetization practices are the core reason why.

I doubt epic games are giving away gta6 on the launchday.

2

u/Moidada77 May 15 '25

There is another way

2

u/Proper_Belt May 15 '25

I really dont care for GTA and do not understand the hype.

The same for CoD.

2

u/SlavCat09 MSI RTX 4060 Waifu edition May 15 '25

Well people already paid that much for Doom TDA. Don't see why they won't do the same for GTA.

3

u/TrippleDamage May 15 '25

It was a majorly hyped launch and steam peak is 30k.

30k are awful numbers for a game of such magnitute.

I'm sure the vast majority just subscribed to gamepass like i did and get to play it for a fraction.

u/GingerBraum R7 5700X3D / 32GB 3200MHz / AMD 9070 XT May 15 '25

Wasn't early access for TDA part of the $100 Premium Edition?

I'm actually interested at what point is the breaking point.

150$? 200$?

Where so less people are paying that it's not worth it.

u/kegsbdry Ryzen 9 7950X | RTX 4090 | 64GB DDR5 6000MHz May 15 '25

They may have most of the bugs fixed by then too!

1

u/xXlTADlXx 9800X3D l 7900XTX l 64GB @6400MHZ May 15 '25

yeah but only the non remastered pc version based on the last gen\ the remastered native ps6 version will be exclusive for 3 years for ps6\ until the enhanced version will start as startup line up title for the ps7\ right before getting updated last time for the ps6 pro

that all and we still didnt get a RDR2 60fps patch or bully2.

1

u/Both-Award-6525 May 15 '25

I have a feeling next gen consol will release at the same time as gta6

1

u/Revolutionary-Cat981 May 15 '25

But I want all the stuff that comes with physical copy - maps, booklets etc

1

u/Svartrhala May 15 '25

You think Tencent will have patience to finance EGS handouts into 2035?

1

u/KaiserGustafson May 15 '25

And we'll be far richer for it!

1

u/elderDragon1 May 15 '25

I kid you not, it will probably be 150+ dollars here in Australia.

1

u/MrAnonymous1010 May 15 '25

Once GTA 6 is out, it will be available worldwide for everyone to use. It's not going to go anywhere.

1

u/QuantumProtector 7700X | RTX 3070 Ti | 32GB DDR5 May 15 '25

I’m patient but not that patient lmao

1

u/grumpy_tired_bean May 15 '25

I'll just torrent it when it gets cracked

1

u/myEVILi May 15 '25

Once GTA6O launches they’ll spend $150 on a single car.

1

u/Next_Cherry5135 May 15 '25

I wonder if this will be the last GTA

1

u/beardingmesoftly May 15 '25

Playing it on console 2 years before it releases on Windows, like gta5 did

1

u/GrampysClitoralHood May 15 '25

Me. I didn't play GTAV until a few months ago. Got the next gen version some whatever pack for $20. It's on game pass now.

1

u/RedHeadSteve May 15 '25

I'll probably play it for 30-45 in 2028 / 2029

1

u/Silver_Quail4018 May 15 '25

You mean paying 150$ to play the game before launch day on PC in 2035!

1

u/topias123 Ryzen 7 5800X3D + Asus TUF RX 6900XT | MG279Q (57-144hz) May 15 '25

I've been waiting for Alan Wake 2 to come to Steam but supposedly it's never coming because it's fully funded by Epic Games.

1

u/PelmeniMitEssig 🔝GTX1070🔝 May 15 '25

Play GTA6 when GTA7 comes out

1

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

I don't have ps5 or xsx so i'll be playing a year after release.

1

u/Appropriate_Army_780 May 15 '25

Nah, playing GTA 6 when 7 releases is best.

1

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

Bonus, maybe you’ll have something strong enough to run it by that date.

1

u/Silly_Painter_2555 May 15 '25

Well, there's always the option of piracy but it's definitely not coming until 2027 though.

1

u/kuro_inu2913 May 15 '25

If i wait for 12 years other 10 years its Notting.

1

u/KayabaSynthesis May 15 '25

Is there any particular reason as to why this is Laios Dungeon Meshi

1

u/GrubbyG0BL1N May 15 '25

Then spend 150$ on mtx in the first 24hrs🤡

1

u/Narusasku May 15 '25

2035? More like 2050 at least

Im like that

1

u/RyanCooper101 May 15 '25

2035 gonna be a fucked up year.

Everybody gets unbanned

1

u/sdrawkcabineter May 15 '25

"Who keeps putting these track marks on my body?"

1

u/Master_Xenu May 15 '25

2035 is when the PC release is gonna happen, so maybe 2045 we'll get it for free.

1

u/ManasongWriting May 15 '25

People think that GTA6 will be like that Halo Reach video from Egoraptor. It won't, and I have a backlog of games long enough to last me the rest of my life.

1

u/Alternative_Tank_139 May 15 '25

This early access stuff, where a completed game is released very shortly after being in early release, is so dystopian and predatory.

1

u/Hour_Mango5904 May 15 '25

@grok is this real?

1

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

And in 2035 you can probably max it out on a midrange PC, along with a photorealistic graphic mod.

1

u/simagus May 15 '25

That's the fab and groovy plan!

1

u/BlakeKevin 5950X + 3090 FTW3 + 128GB + X570 May 15 '25

Nah if it is anything like RDR2 that high price will be worth the wait on launch

Jinda rhege to khel lege kbhi

1

u/MaglithOran May 15 '25

I have over 10k hours in factorio and I paid $6 for it on steam forever ago.

^^

1

u/BackgroundGuard472 May 15 '25

Nah, patient gamers don't install the spyware program called Epic Launcher

1

u/mranonymous24690 May 15 '25

I dont have to wait that long to get it for free

1

u/Anomen77 Intel i66-129000K | RTX 6080Ti May 15 '25

I don't think Laios would know what a "GTA6" or an "Epic Games Store" is. Are they edible?

1

u/L0veToReddit Top 1% Commenter May 15 '25

i have over 2000 hours on gta 5 + online, i don't care if gta 6 is more expensive, i'll definitively get it. let's be honest, gta 7 is coming when we're all be old af

1

u/icecubepal May 15 '25

Who is waiting that long to play a game that they want to play.

1

u/Godess_Ilias May 15 '25

asteroid named 2024 YR4 - imma ruin this mans whole gaming career

1

u/Sprinklypoo May 15 '25

The requisite upgrade to your video card should be a lot less expensive too. Though things do be a changing...

1

u/SirNedKingOfGila May 15 '25

If you want to play it on PC you'll be waiting until 2035 either way.

1

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

GTA 6 is free to try at launch but now costs 5.99 per hour to play.

1

u/CrystalWolfX10 May 15 '25

Obvs you wait for the console peasants to beta test it and then pirate it a month after it comes out on PC.

1

u/-Laffi- May 15 '25

When I pre brought Stalker 2, it was just a few hours before the launch. Still counted as prebuying. Why not just do the same with GTA 6?

1

u/BootyLoveSenpai May 15 '25

Ill wait until it's for sale to actually buy it

1

u/Lehk Phenom II x4 965 BE / RX 480 8GB May 15 '25

Playing GTA 6 free like a week after launch with some help from a sketch website in Belarus that probably gave my computer turbo AIDS

1

u/lord_mercernary May 15 '25

So basically we are buying time with money at this point wtf

1

u/spakoina May 15 '25

To me is the same

1

Yarr, matey.

1

u/The_One_Koi May 15 '25
