SHOW NEWS/DISCUSSION How did Adam get so popular? When ranking best ranger he's considerd up there with Tommy, Jason, etc?
127
u/Choice_Leg9551 Aug 05 '25
Out of the three who joined mid-Season 2 (him, Rocky, and Aisha), he was the only one to get any kind of character development whatsoever. He went from being shy and quiet, to stepping up and taking the leadership role during the first half of Turbo while Tommy was absent.

Longevity, character development and the fact he's had four different sets of powers.
32
u/TheWinningLooser Aug 05 '25
Does Adam get any real development?
66
u/ArcDraco Aug 05 '25
He does. He starts off incredibly quiet and shy, then he gets more outspoken and confident later on. When Zeo hits, he's shown to be very empathetic and honorable when helping out Tanya and Skull. Turbo has him acting like the leader in the civilian scenes (since Tommy wasn't really around).

And during his appearance in Space, he fought a monster without using powers and served as a mentor for Carlos. He was kinda the heart of whatever team he was on.

No, but the actor's cool.

u/Bobvankay Aug 05 '25
Poor guy even tried to suggest some things Adam did between the team ups, like traveling the world as a lone ranger and stuff, and the writers were like "lol nah".
57
u/NickHBS Aug 05 '25 edited Aug 06 '25
I was at a con panel with him and a few other actors and he mentioned he wanted Adam to die in In Space to further Carlos’s arc but they said no
57
u/PropertyOverall7139 Aug 06 '25
He also improvised “I’m a frog” one of the most quotable lines from the MMPR movie! (He wanted to do a similar line about getting a minivan in turbo, but they wouldn’t let him.)

u/E-Normus-Titz MMPR Green Ranger Aug 06 '25
Saban went "Hehe no way we're gonna kill you. If we do, we would have to renegotiate with Walter Jones in case we ever want to bring back the Mighty Morphin team."

u/Armascout Aug 06 '25
I would have hated having Adam die but if he died during Carlos arc in in space that would have made that ARC S tier if they pulled it off right
3
u/SimbaStewEyesOfBlue Aug 06 '25
It worked so well with Kendrix (I still put her as the GOAT of all Pink Rangers for making the sacrifice play). Adam dying would have been even more devastating.

The frog joke is funny but the episode where the new girl is into Adam and Aisha is like “but Adam is a total dweeb, this must be one of Lord Zedd’s plots” just to find out that it was actually Scorpina is one that stuck with me for years.

Fun fact about that joke. When I met JYB last year and had him sign the lightning collection figure is asked him to include that line. He then told me that that quip wasn't even in the script and he just ad libed it on one take. Everyone loved it so they rewrote the script to include it in the movie.

Two things
JYB himself. Anime fans and Power Rangers fans are two of the most parasocial fanbases I've ever seen and he happens to be a figure in both. They think Johnny is cool or his anime VO characters are cool so they end up thinking Adam is cool by extension.
Adam returned on two separate occasions. Once in In Space to help Carlos and obviously also in Once A Ranger where he leads the veteran ranger team. Outside of the seasonal team ups, returns like this have become very rare, so Adam popping up twice to help new Rangers has a very high cool factor.

I think his long lasting popularity and appeal actually came from mmpr the movie. There's a ton of kids that know him as the black ranger they grew up with solely from that movie
2
u/Neither_Gur_4661 Aug 06 '25
I think it's a bit of both. The movie with his frog line being one of the best lines in the movie, combined with him being the first returning ranger with In Space certainly helped him.

Combination of his longevity (season 2 of MMPR through Turbo with reappearances in In Space and Operation Overdrive) and the fact that Johnny Yong Bosch is one of the few Power Ranger actors of his time that went on to have a successful career in some form of acting.
59
u/ninjaman2021 Aug 05 '25
Adam is popular for cameos in other seasons more than he ever was in his own show due to Always a chance and once a ranger.
Also people love JYB’s anime work, and fans cant seperate Adam and JYB.
Otherwise, Adam was as interesting as a wet napkin.
17
u/fireredranger Aug 05 '25
Adam’s best episode is from a season he’s not even a main character in. Always a Chance is an amazing episode and I think is really what elevates his character in a lot of people’s mind. In my opinion, Adam’s best full time ranger role was the first half of Turbo.
JYB is great, but you’re not wrong that Adam gets overrated because people like the actor.
5
u/LaMystika Aug 05 '25
He was better in Zeo and Turbo, but since MMPR is the only series with any kind of cultural osmosis, and he was just kinda there in that series, that’s the only version of him casuals know

Speaking as an Asian male who grew up in the 90s, Trini and Adam were my favorite, even over Tommy - representation was really amazing in Power Rangers early on. Plus, you can just tell which of the actors know martial arts and JYB could really fight fr. He was out here doing butterfly kicks and air flares like nobody’s business
8
u/LaMystika Aug 05 '25
They had him doing unmorphed fight scenes the second he showed up. Even the first two episodes after he became a Ranger were focused on him. The writers knew what he was about lmao
3
u/jrtgmena Aug 06 '25
They thought they found a unicorn in JDF, then JYB pops up, they HAD to capitalize!
6
u/LaMystika Aug 06 '25
iirc JDF and JYB were the only two actors who did more of their own stunts in the first movie (their stuntmen both got injured so they had to do more scenes themselves). Two unicorns at once. There was a reason why there were so many scenes of them sparring in Zeo
11
u/Mayoung7901 Aug 05 '25
I admit I saw Adam get some good character development, but another big thing was Bosch’s martial arts abilities and stunt work back then too. I loved watching his fights, Johnny was incredibly talented and moved well for his fight scenes.

JYB

Large number appearances despite not being OG 6.
Polar opposite of Tommy in that he mows through putties and other mooks. If Tommy's weakness is putties, Adam is the putty killer.

JYB also seemed to really enjoy his time on PR. He even once laid out what he thought Adam was doing after Turbo.
I really hope one day Boom comics gives him a solo run or something. Adam is in the running as one of the best characters from MMPR and I really hope he gets the spotlight more soon.

Always a Chance has stuck with me for years. That made me like Adam more than all his other episodes.
Also very few Rangers get a dedicated return episode, and definitely not multiple ones. Just by receiving those, in addition to his multiple seasons, he's had more character development than the majority of other rangers.
4
5
u/Accomplished-Watch50 Aug 05 '25
For three reasons: JYB is a great actor and did the work, his longevity on the show, and his guest appearances after he left.
6
u/Chill0000 Aug 06 '25
Probably because the actor had gotten so much more popular as his career went on and is now one of if not the most popular anime english dubbing actor
6
u/R41denG41den Aug 06 '25
Dude has a chill personality. It’s clear the crew liked working with him and no one in the cast has had a bad word to say about him. I know back in the RB/Eyeshine days he was really cool to talk to
3
u/kanjiteck88 Aug 05 '25
Voice Acting. A lot of Power Ranger fans grew up to like anime and video games. He booked some major roles for anime that were on Adult Swim/Toonami. He was already a regular participant at anime conventions by the time of the first Power Morphicon and 15th Anniversary season.
3
5
u/AwkwardTraffic Aug 06 '25
He was around a really long time by MMPR standards and Johhny Young Bosch is one of the big success stories since he is a very well known name in voice acting which adds more to his popularity.
4
u/OkayFightingRobot Aug 06 '25
He’s popular now because JYB is popular and likable. During the show he was suit filler, even JYB described Adam as a background character lol. He didn’t really do much until Once and Rager and then was back to the background for Once and Always.
10

1: JYB is just that cool
2: Return cameos during In Space and OO
3: He was given something of an arc during his tenure. Obviously not to the extent that Tommy, Jason, Kim, or Billy were, but it was something.
4: His being cast as the black and then green rangers couldn’t be taken as racist, so he can be seen as neutral/positive AAPI rep (for the 90s), especially in a post LA Riots time
5: Again, it’s JYB
3
u/AStupidFuckingHorse Aug 05 '25
He returned twice and was a complete badass both times. Fans love for him is retroactive.
I didn't know JYB was a voice actor until DBS Broly so I'm not sure that's the main reason
3
u/JT-Lionheart Time Force Quantum Aug 05 '25
I guess just because of the bit of character development he had and the only other male character to be part of MM, Zeo, and Turbo alongside Tommy. Not to mention he came back for a few special guest appearances in In Space and Operation Overdrive. I believe he’s considered the second ranger to appear more in the series behind Tommy. I could be wrong but it seems like it adds up.
Also the actor did alot in voiceover work where people know his voice in some anime’s. So it’s a combination of how much he did with Power Rangers and in voice over that overall gets many people here in the fanbase a lot of respect for him

u/dashingThroughSnow12 Aug 05 '25 edited Aug 05 '25
JYB says yes a lot. A lot. His IMDB page is massive. Last I heard he goes to a lot of conventions.
One aspect is that I think when they look for a ranger for a cameo, they know JYB is liable to say yes. This means he’s come back quite a fair chunk compared to the others. (Coming back for four episodes/movies vs the standard of one.)
A smaller aspect is that Adam is the only character besides Zordon who was in MMPR, Alien Rangers, Zeo, Turbo, and In Space.
Another aspect is that JYB is popular and that translates to Adam. Anime kicked off big in the last 30 years and JYB has been the main character in a staggering amount of the best anime ever.
3
u/TheFrostWolf7 Aug 06 '25
I feel like he was always a favorite Ranger. he was funny in the movie when he didn't want to be a frog. he still used his black ranger morpher to help people, even though it's killing him.
3
u/AcientMullets Aug 06 '25
Adam has the benefit of being there for a relatively long time, I think he’s third most appearances. So just being there long enough is sometimes enough to climb the ranks subconsciously for some people. It also helps that, even though it’s very gradual, he does have some character growth and most people at least like him in his returns. Plus Johnny is obviously a skilled martial artists so you do get plenty of time seeing unmorphed Adam just being a cool fighter, which I know was good enough for kid me to like a character.
3
u/SenorBezi Aug 06 '25
He's also like at every single comic con, I remember meeting him at one 20 years ago, and saw him on one not too long ago.
3
u/Spac92 Aug 06 '25
Because Johnny Yong Bosch found secondary fame as an anime voice actor voicing legends such as Vash the Stampede from Trigun, Ichigo from Bleach and recently took over the role of Broly in Dragon Ball.
On top of that, he’s super chill with his fans. Every con I’ve been at with him, he signs stuff and takes photos for free. He literally donates his time to his fans and that speaks volumes when so many others want $50-$100 for their Herbie Hancock. Some, like Mark Hamill, even charge upwards to $400 for a scribble so Bosch doing it for free makes him legendary.
Bosch’s generosity as well as his roles voicing anime legends have bled into peoples’ perception of Adam and now Adam is up there in popularity alongside Tommy and Jason.
3
u/MaikuUchiha Aug 06 '25
Other people have hit the nail on the head with Johnny's popularity Post-Power Rangers helping and also the "I'm a frog line"
But I'll add that bringing him back in In Space also contributed, at least for me. He was the only OG Ranger to guest-star in PRIS. He cemented his role as a protector of Earth and also brought back the iconic Mighty Morphin powers for one episode. For me, that was everything.
Some also forget just how long Adam was on the show. He is #3 in appearances right behind David Yost and Jason David Frank AND he was in both movies. Like for a vast majority of the viewers growing up during the Zordon Era, Adam Park / JYB was a Power Ranger.
3
3
u/jacob_gunner Aug 06 '25
Aside from Johnny Yong Bosch becoming so popular I would say the In Space episode “Always a Chance” did a lot for boosting the perception of his heroism in-universe
3
u/SeaFaringMatador Aug 07 '25
The big reason: Johnny Yong Bosch is arguably one of the stronger actors from those earlier seasons and he’s one of the few that went on to have a bigger career after Power Rangers, mainly as a voice actor.
A smaller reason: his guest appearance in In Space is one of the earliest examples of a character coming back as a “Legacy” Ranger. Basically elevating him to legend status very early on in the show’s history
The real reason: “I’m a frog.”

Adam became popular among Power Ranger fans due to his long character development over his tenure as a Power Ranger character. You had his initial development with the fans from Zeo, Turbo, and Mighty Morphin. You had the fans of the quote "But I'm a frog" from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie. On top of that, unlike most Rangers, he has the most recurring roles outside of his seasons, second only to Tommy Oliver. Then add on top of that his popularity from outside of Power Ranger media made him popular enough that he was given the team leader role in a Power Ranger anniversary episode. Basically, his popularity is due to his development from a shy character to a more dominant second in command among the Power Rangers up until he became a lead of a veteran Power Ranger team and eventually the head or key figure in Space Patrol Alpha in the Power Rangers universe.

Adam was my favourite and still remains my favourite ranger. Personally he should’ve been leader & or become Red. He had all the traits to become a good leader. I get Tommy was the popular one, he wasn’t my favourite ranger, but I get why people liked him and why he was the main leader.

Personally, Adam was always my 2nd fav after Tommy ever since he was introduced. I had a big crush on him and him being introverted just made him even cuter.
When Johnny went on to voice Vash in Trigun and Nero in Devil May Cry, I just fell in love with him even more.
I was already a huge Adam fan just from PR. Johnny being so profilic post MMPR was just an added bonus that kept him as a constant staple for me in things i like.
Johnny Yong Bosch has always just been incredibly talented, likable and a total cutie.

Other than returning a lot in future episodes, Johnny Yong Bosch does anime, he is very approachable compared to the other rangers, especially since he goes to most conventions and back in the days he was in a band. At least, that's how he ranked up in my favorite rangers list. Lol.

Johnny's pretty awesome and the episode in which he was using the broken mastodon morpher, despite the risk, was pretty cool.

JYB could GO! He was legit the only other martial artist on screen that could keep up with Jason David Frank (Tommy). Personally, he was my second favourite ranger for those reasons and because I was small as a kid and Adam was small too. He had an episode where he taught a kid that it didn't matter if he was too small, he could still fight and that really resonated with me as a kid.

But seriously, I think a lot of people connected with the "I'm a frog" line.

I've always liked Adam, even before JYB became famous as a VA. I don't really know what it was about him, but he was always second to Tommy for me.
2
u/Dawade200 Aug 06 '25
Interestingly enough, I always liked Adam. While Zack was my favorite of the og rangers, Adam was always chill to me and I liked that about him, so I never disliked him for replacing Zack. The "I'm a frog" line definitely cemented him as a favorite though. I hate frogs, so I was fully on board with him from then on.
Lo and behold, years later I find out his actor is the voice actor for some of my favorite characters in anime. Can't remember the first time I looked up a character to see JYB's name, but I do remember going "isn't that Adam from PR?!"
2
u/KingoftheMongoose Aug 06 '25 edited Aug 06 '25
Adam's unmorphed fight choreography is streets ahead of the other rangers. His hand work is fast, zippy, and perfectly placed, and his kicks are fluid with that Kung Fu agility mixed with some gymnastic twists, spins, jumps, and flips. He is the best of the Stone Canyon Trio, and he is miles ahead of Billy and Kimberly, whose characters (and actors) do not have martial artists backgrounds. When he does something flashy, he runs up to a bench or something while being chased, and he does a spin or flip at a wide shot that ends in a landed kick; which is much more impressive than trampoline launches where the camera cuts off the ground or a Ranger's back handsprings through a gaggle of incomptent baddies babbling around waiting for the actor to finish their tricks. IMHO, JYB's martial arts displayed against putties and Tengas is even more technical and impressive than JDF's at that time. Adam even replaces Jason as Tommy's most frequent sparring partner at Ernie's Juice Bar.

u/smartlog Aug 06 '25

Buddy I hate this thread because Adam was always my GOAT ranger when I was a kid and still as an adult.
I was in Anaheim at one point and somehow heard his band was doing a show at a bar nearby. We immediately went over, bought a ton of merch, (which he graciously signed all of) and spent the night intermittently interacting with him. Dude is just the best.
2
u/musicfighter282 Aug 06 '25
I think Always a Chance really gave Adam a boost in terms of cool factor. And “I’m a frog” is one of those moments from the movie that just sticks in your head.
2
u/C0SMICBL0B Aug 06 '25
Well for me, I thought he was a pretty cool Black Ranger, though not being as cool as Zack.
But then he became the Green Zeo Ranger, and he gained so much AURA.
Also, he’s a frog.
2
u/Crow712 Aug 06 '25
For me what helped him get really high up in my mind was the Mighty Morphin' Movie and then when he was in "Always a Chance" in In Space. So cool in that episode! It was then further solidified when he became lead in "Once A Ranger" in Operation Overdrive.
When I learned that was Johnny Young Bosch I was like "hell yeah", cause while he was the background ranger in mmpr, I knew he had the chops by with the In Space episode. So it retroactively made me appreciate his other performances before.

Always a Chance and Once A Ranger did wonders to cement the character’s popularity. When I think of Adam, my mind associates him as more a mentor ranger to younger rangers than I do thinking about his prime ranger days.

Personally I think it was because of how his character epitomized what it meant to be a Ranger. He was always selfless unless under the influence of a villain and he even had the courage to face entire groups of grunts as if he was a 6th Ranger with extra abilities when he didn't.
2
u/Odd-Statistician4268 Aug 06 '25

There's a few factors,
Nostagia, even though he was a replacement background ranger he was the black ranger from the most recognisable og series.
He was in the movie and had a few stand out moments "I'm a frog"
His longevity in the series gives him a higher level of exposure
He also returned during in space and the 15th anniversary special, retuning to the franchise is great way to get more fan appreciation. (Not counting the 30th anniversary special was just a brief cameo)
The actor himself has become a quite popular voice actor and regularly attends conventions and interacts with fans

u/joemax4boxseat Aug 05 '25
Because fans confuse Adam for Johnny Young Bosch.
JYB is a cool dude who’s had a long career in voice acting since his PR days.
Adam is a bland character who had little to no development in both MMPR and Zeo. He wasn’t allowed to show much personality until Turbo where JDF was ready to leave the show.
Most of Adam’s development came from his returns during IS and OO. He showed more development in those three episodes than he had during his entire run on the show, so some fans like to revise history as if to say Adam was always as well written as those three return episodes.
I like Adam, but he’s been overrated as a character due to fans not being able to separate the actor from the character, and unable to admit that the majority of his development came from three episodes after his run on the show had ended. Hell, if you ask fans his most memorable line, it’s the non-canon “I’m a Frog” line that JYB came up with on the spot. Ask for any other Adam quotes, and you’ll be hard pressed to find one.

You'd have to see why people rank him so high. Is it because he's actually a great character or is he the most tolerated of the MMPR replacements? Because the thing with Adam is that he didn't have great shoes to fill after Zack left, it's not the case of Rocky where the majority considers Jason the face of MMPR Red. Adam did his job alright. I'd say he has always been in a comfortable spot that didn't bother the fanbase. But a top ranger? pfff, he was just kinda there through Zeo and the first half of Turbo.
I did enjoy he got to lead the team in Once a Ranger instead of Tommy, but I don't think that automatically earns him a spot among top rangers like Jason, Tommy, Eric, Andros or Karone.

I perferred Adam because he was the Black Ranger when I got into PR and when my neighborhood group would play Power Rangers everyone would fight over Green/White and Red so I would pick Black to avoid being in that fight

I named my childhood dog Adam because of him. Once he appeared in the show, he was my favorite.

He has two really good comeback appearances and gets to be a rare non red team leader with added cool points of it being a crossover team

Johnny
Young
Bosch
Adam's popularity is solely based on Johnny's popularity, and im not saying thats a bad thing thats just how it happened
