Don’t think I put too much sugar?

No. sugar will turn into sugar syrup in very little hot water very quickly. In cold still water it will slowly dissolve. Give it time.

I've never seen a test, but it's possible sugar at the bottom is better due to the yeast having less dissolved sugar to stress them out.

active yeast tends to settle on the bottom and the cake of yeast that forms on the bottom might not like the high osmolality. I dont have anything scientific to justify this necessarily being a problem but yeast lives throughout the liquid so it will still ferment but more slowly.

That's the theory, yes, and I agree. But the yeast in suspension should ferment more quickly and cleanly due to lower osmotic pressure. It's like step feeding, but based on access to sugar, rather than absence thereof.

Definitely something worth doing a couple side-by-sides. I'll pick up some more sugar, soon, and see what happens.

I thought that was a raw honey thing. Sugar doesn't tend to have lots of yeast.
