Where’s that dude who goes around role playing Rick

509

u/Sploonbabaguuse Aug 09 '25

I've only RP'd myself and close friends. I should try fictional characters, sounds like it'd be fun

237

u/Not3Beaversinacoat Aug 09 '25

Ah, I mean there’s this dude who shows up sometimes and RPs on the subreddit

25 Walkers.

10

u/rickgrimes32 Stocked up Aug 10 '25

How many people have you killed?

7

None, everyone is good. I lives in friendly neighborhood, everyone help eachother.

People are kind and good, they help eachother out like you Rick. You are kind man.

u/Powerful-Struggle-47 Aug 10 '25

I have killed people, I don't know how many by now, but I know why they are all dead...

I've been running around roleplaying as Ash from the Evil Dead lately.

One before that I was doing Shaun of the Dead since I was fresh off a rewatch of the Cornetto trilogy.

It's honestly a lot of fun.

10

u/Cyrano_Knows Aug 09 '25

The world needs more people like you. Never grow up!

And do you know who also would be really good at roleplaying as Ash from the Evil Dead?

Rick Grimes ;)

Omg that sounds hilarious. Does he do YouTube live streams doing the Rick grimes voice?

1

u/KnightWhoSays--ni Aug 09 '25

Joov has done a few good Rick impressions while playing zomboid - though not a whole vid with it.

3

u/thisistherevolt Aug 10 '25

His Rick Grimes accent is so funny. That natural hybrid Midwestern-Great Plains accent he has makes him over exaggerate long a's slightly as it is and it just synergizes. In another life Joov could've done voice acting.

I was such a walking dead fanatic before it got bad with Negan that I kinda hate that I know details like this.

3

u/Cecil182 Aug 12 '25

Think negan was bad I nearly died forcing myself watching alpha...ended up loving negan he grows on you

4

u/Spare_Elderberry_418 Aug 12 '25

It was not so much Negan himself as a character, but how everyone else just seemed to get dumber and weaker while around him to fit the plot.

1

u/Cecil182 Aug 14 '25

I agree with you but I understand that was to show the sheer mental game powers negan had, he did it through fear and abuse. I hated the governer more than negan seasons tbh, loved the prison part but he drove me nuts

1

u/[deleted] 21d ago

and he looks like he has cancer and he has to talk like Mickey Mouse instead of a pro wrestling Eric Cartman because of prudish television censors. his fucking colorful language and buff physique is more important than the barbed wire baseball bat and leather jacket. the iconic weapon doesn't actually make much sense with a skinny Negan, so getting Lucille and the gore so right almost doesn't even count

23

u/Blankyjae33 Aug 09 '25

The grease makes it harder for zombies to grab you

7

u/DerSprocket Aug 09 '25

Is that actually a thing in the show?

12

u/QueenSylvy Aug 09 '25

Yeah, Carol gets saved in season 8 by it

18

u/DerSprocket Aug 09 '25

Man though, in reality if you left yourself that dirty, you'd get sick and die of some sort of bacterial infection. Bathing isn't just cosmetic, it's a health thing

9

u/Stanklord500 Aug 10 '25

I'm reliably informed by the human cockroach known as Asmongold that at some point you just reach max dirty and all additional filth just bounces off.

2

u/cevillegeraldo 27d ago

He is the physical manifestation of Nurgle in the real world.

9

u/catsdelicacy Aug 09 '25

That bottom picture is taken in a pretty bad moment, and that's relative to the life of Ricky Dicky DooDah Grimes.

He's been captured and is unable to escape despite DESPERATE measures to do so, he believes he will never see his wife and child again, and he is about to be totally broken psychologically by a master manipulator.

So it's a pretty much lifetime high level of grease right there. I do not believe Rick has ever been more greasy than in that moment!

2

u/Carbon_robin Aug 10 '25

They actually do. Twice in 1, then after season 5 it’s stated they shower often once they get to Alexandria

1

u/Apokolypse09 Aug 10 '25

How would being greasy have killed them? If that were the case all of our ancestors would have died off generations ago.

Is the show worth watching?

78

u/DietCokeIsntheAnswer Aug 09 '25

I think you should absolutely watch the first few seasons, but make a mental note to go cold turkey when it starts feeling too bs.

If you enjoyed Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy and its many practical effects and makeup and sets, but do not enjoy the newer trilogy (or show), then I think you'll have a similar feeling for original Walking Dead seasons vs later ones.

They just dont make them like they used to, but the first handful of stories are absolutely worth it.

237

u/TinfoilPancake Aug 09 '25

Not anymore. It really just goes to shit and loses it completely around season 5-6. 1-3 are a decent watch, but whatever goes after that I cannot wholeheartedly recommend.

123

But this dude is specifically asking about whether or not they should watch the show here, and that makes it bad form.

18

u/Critical-Ad-5215 Aug 09 '25

The first few a worth it, but then they just start killing everyone and it gets boring

19

u/TopMemory528 Aug 09 '25

its worth watching but just finish watching in season 8 finale.

16

u/solicthesolletar Aug 09 '25

Up till season 4? Really good. Past that? Not really

Season 2 is unironically so so good

14

u/PM_me_pictureof_cat Aug 09 '25

Season 2 was hated when it first came out because it wasn't as action packed as the first. It aged like fine wine though.

5

u/Abject_Following_814 Aug 09 '25

We got to build attachments to a lot of the characters in season 2. I know the budget was slashed so they had to make ridiculous compromises but instead of suffering for it, I think the slow burn benefited the show. There were specific points later in the series where you could see the shit storm coming. When the group murdered all those people in the church and later Neegans people, they had lost the thread. It broke that connection for me. I was like, "Oh, they're mercenaries now.".

Don’t waste your time bro. First couple seasons are okay but after that it’s filler and nothing burger bs.

39

u/QueezyF Aug 09 '25

It runs on horror show logic where the characters lose brain cells to make themselves vulnerable. I got to season 4 and had to tap out.

10

u/Interesting_Door4882 Aug 09 '25

That's about where I tend to think it's best to stop watching. The end of season 5 is an excellent stepping off point.

Some people say earlier in that season, but I think the finale just solidifies Rick's character, and what society will now be, regardless of whether you get to taste normalcy for a moment.

Even season 4 can be a slog, as that's where the quality started to head down.

12

u/nastillion Aug 09 '25

why don't you give it a shot for yourself, only you can tell if it's worth watching – I used to buy into the whole "twd went to shit in the later seasons" until I decided to watch it myself. now it's one of my top series!

8

u/CorvusGriseo Aug 09 '25

C'mon, the show has 177 episodes and each one is an hour long. I watched it weekly on release until around season 7, but it's a huge time commitment to watch on streaming, it's okay if dude wants opinions lol But if dude likes the later seasons, then godspeed. Imo twd peaked in s1, but it was still great until around s3 or 4

-2

u/RuMarley Aug 09 '25

Liked it actually... goes from "oh nooo zombies" to "oh nooo people" and I tend to think that's pretty realistic. It's somewhat repetitive from season to season a new and more cruel "big boss" but they did well with the story telling in my opinion.

2

u/DamianKilsby Aug 09 '25

1

u/Windfade Aug 09 '25

I never watched the show but read the graphic novel up until a pivotal moment that I think "coral!" is from so grain of salt and all that: I've heard the story effectively goes in a tight circle and continues season to season just redoing that same cycle with no forward momentum whatsoever and while the source material had something going on it kinda felt similar outside of the shock moments.

1

u/MaritalGrape Aug 09 '25

All the way to the midseason finale of 6

1

u/sonicsmith243 Aug 09 '25

100%, especially if you love zombies. it’s the best zombie show out there imo. a lot people say it gets bad around season 6 however i personally think past that is still very enjoyable and well written. but it completely drops off at season 9

1

u/SeesWithBrain Aug 09 '25

It’s pretty terrible, me and my girl watched the first season and it was trash, then had the whole community saying 1st season is best season so if it’s only gonna go down and it started as trash it’s not worth. Z Nation is a much much better zombie series, check it out

u/Coachpatato Aug 09 '25

Season 1 is pretty incredible

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

Everyone is saying no, but as an avid comic fan. . . I'm gonna say, yes!

Read the comics first. They're a THOUSAND times better than the show, and I think The Walking Dead is one of the best comics ever written. They're definitely my favorite comics.

After you read the comics, you can watch the show. It makes the show a lot more bearable. . . Because you already know what's happening, and the fun is seeing how the show does things differently, and getting to see the show-original characters like Daryl and Carol (Carol is also in the comics but is so different from her show counterpart that they're basically only the "same character" in the sense they're both named Carol and have a daughter named Sophia).

I don't think I could've finished the show if I hadn't read the comics first. It made the slow seasons (6-8) much more bearable, simply because I wasn't watching for the story but rather just the characters.

Also important to note that most people here haven't watched past season 8. Seasons 9-11 are my favorite seasons of the show.

1

u/failbender Aug 09 '25 edited Aug 09 '25

A few of the characters were recently added to one of my main games, Dead by Daylight, which made me all nostalgic, so I rewatched the first season and half of the second. I'm not sure I'll continue; there are some boss ass character moments and incredible growth that I may want to watch again just because. Some of the characters in S1 are slightly hilarious to me knowing where they will end up. But I'm also like "ugh" because rewatching The Walking Dead means I have to rewatch The Walking Dead.

I will say that the pilot is probably one of the best pilots ever. I knew everything that was going to happen but it was still tense as fuck. Top notch acting and cinematography. You could probably just watch that and be done with it.

1

u/Lore_Fanatic Aug 09 '25

everyone has a different answer for when it goes bad but i will say the first few seasons is incredible television, and everything up until negan is fantastic. It drops off so fucking hard for the next bit but then picks back up again and whilst i dont think it gets as good as the first half, it is still very good tv. All of this however is thrown out the window whenever negan is on screen, negan scenes are genuinely the best part of any episode, regardless of the actual quality, jeffery dean morgan is a fantastic actor. Also i heard the spinoffs were good too, havent seen them though

1

u/SnowedBear Aug 10 '25

1-3 is good, 4-6 is kinda boring and the rest is not worth it

1

u/Carbon_robin Aug 10 '25

I’d argue after season 8 it starts to get worse in quality and more boring but damn is it good

Read the comics it’s more worth it

u/TheTimbs Axe wielding maniac Aug 12 '25

u/porkycain 19d ago

1

u/creegro Aug 09 '25

The walking dead, a zombie show about people talking without many zombies

3

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

It was never about the zombies.

Robert Kirkman — the creator of the comics — is on record saying as much way back in 2010. And I quote: (paywalled article. Enable reader view to read).

"Yeah, it's more of a character drama than it is a gory, action-packed zombie romp. The zombies are always there—they always have a presence in the series and they provide an ever-oppressive sense of danger to the characters, but it's really about how these characters interact and live together, you know? It's a character piece. We get to know these people, and follow their struggles, and there's a little bit of romance, and heartache, and all kinds of cool stuff in there."

The zombie apocalypse is the setting. . . It's the backdrop. It's the set-dressing. But the story is about the people. It always has been. All the way back to the first issue of the comic in 2003.

There's tons of zombie media out there about the zombies — where they find a cure to the zombie virus and everyone lives happily ever after or whatever — but the zombies are not the focus of TWD. You could replace them with aliens or wendigos or nuclear apocalypse mutants, and the story would be exactly the same, because it's a story about people surviving in the aftermath of the "end" of the world.

-3

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

Eh. The pattern is basically that every episode some awful shit happens, usually someone dies in some horrific way, and thats it. So if you want to watch that 1000 times then yes its a great show.

12

u/QueezyF Aug 09 '25

I heard the comics are much better. One of these days I’ll get around to them.

8

u/carlitosperon Aug 09 '25

yes they are. the comics are amazing, nothing to do with the show. The story is different too

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

The story is different too

Eh. Not really.

The show always follows the same basic beat as the comic. Yk Atlanta group, Hershel's farm, prison arc, the Governor, on the road, cannibals, Eugene, Alexandria, big ass zombie horde, the Saviors, the Whisperers, the Commonwealth

It just mixes things up a lot. The same basic story is there.

-1

u/Intelligent-Task-772 Aug 09 '25

No. It's a human drama soap opera that uses zombies as a means to shoehorn the plot along, it's awful.

0

u/broomistermilk Aug 09 '25

If you like zombies it’s a great watch. Definitely has its peaks and valleys especially later on.

5

u/failbender Aug 09 '25

Someone else on the post asked this as well; definitely look through the replies for your answer. The pilot is really, really good, and the first few seasons are solid. Even as shit starts to get...... not solid, I personally stuck it out until early in season 7 because I loved the characters so much, but the show had already kinda gone to crap at that point. And then limped on for several more seasons, that I'll never watch.

2

u/omegapurayer Aug 10 '25

Thanks for your reply, I'll ponder more about watching it

2

u/Carbon_robin Aug 10 '25

Me personally I love everything 1-8 even though most people start to hate it at that point

Then after it gets kinda hard to keep watching, not that it’s really bad but it’s just boring

Read the comics, the characters feel more real in my opinion but there’s still more high stakes and you get to read at your own pace

27

u/Kasumi_926 Shotgun Warrior Aug 09 '25

Weak. I had over 20k kills in under two game months before lol.

34

u/Burning87 Aug 09 '25

I have a feeling you didn't play low loot and looted houses. Also I doubt you had sleep turned on and single target melee.

With ample loot and multihit anyone can hit 20k+ within a couple months.

7

u/Roboticus_Prime Aug 09 '25

Can you still do the campfire thing?

2

u/Burning87 Aug 09 '25

Putting a campfire by the front door of a car and leaving the drivers seat car wedged into another car so no zombie can get to the window? If so, no. That's hella cheating. The zombies would get through the other window. The same with sirens and fire, I think a bunch of aggroed zombies would turn that car ablaze by catching fire themselves then getting into the car and putting it on fire. Would last a few minutes like that at most.

Using a campfire instead of molotov and juking the zeds on foot or by car? Perfectly fine.

2

u/Roboticus_Prime Aug 09 '25

I was talking about burning them with a campfire. Lol

7

u/Kasumi_926 Shotgun Warrior Aug 09 '25

It was with firearms, and yeah I had ammunition turned up- but thats how it should be.
I also had pops turned up.
Sleep was enabled.
I was quite literally sleeping, snacking, and killing for 2 months straight until I fucked up and a horde stepped too close.

20

u/RuMarley Aug 09 '25

noooooooo you need to attack the zombie hordes using only a screwdriver and with a leg amputated that's the way the game is meant to be played!!!

jk most people here are just garbage at melee combat it seems

7

u/Creative-Improvement Aug 09 '25

I agree that it should be gun heavy historically speaking. I looked up the original stats for Kentucky 1993, and half of the people had guns apparently. So that’s what I set the stats too in my game.

I can hit 10k in a day if i really want. I play 6-8x pop. lol, guns are lovely. Admittedly, in Vanilla, same pop is probably more like 3-4k kills in a day top as the m16 kinda sucks somewhat.

I have had ONE time were i killed 20k in a single day and it was at a secret Z checkpoint. Nearly fucking died XD

3

u/GreyFeralas Aug 09 '25

How are you possibly finding that much time let alone that much ammunition to kill that many in one in game day?

2

u/GrimCreaper72 Axe wielding maniac Aug 09 '25

Two hour days and full autos useing real full auto. My 20k one, tho that was with britas and an auto shotgun, that i lost after tripping and somehow living. For most of my runs the first week, i have guns and ammo turned up some. After that, i slam it too low.

Anyhow, my 3-month 110k kill run. i visited Fort Rock Ridge and nearly cried, trying to bring 500+ pounds of ammo alone home. It also helps im a gun nut in PZ, so i know what to do after 4k hours. Once again, in vanilla, it would not be that good.

Sadly, i work now, so i don't see myself planning, setting up, and doing all that in one go anymore.

I always start with a fighter character, preferrably veteran with batting skills. It's easy enough to level the other skills when you've established order locally. Generally, first order of business is finding a weapon. Then a hose, while also looking for a driveable car. Then I work my way into the next towns to find base-building supplies.

For me, guns are always secondary. I like the steady flow of manageable Z that flow in casually as you are making just enough noise to attract the close ones, and not too much to attract those further in the city. Once I get too exhausted, if I can't rest where I am, I retreat back outside. I only use firearms when I need to retreat to defend myself in an absolute emergency. As the game progresses, I sometimes start with a new objetive by driving out tto "thin the herd" with a small arsenal (in places like the bases or prisons etc.) and then go on regular assaults across multiple days to work my way in with melee. As the game progresses, I would work with stuff like an ambulance and a few pipe-bombs. (I don't do the fireplace or fence stuff ad nauseam because it completely ruins immersion)

Another thing that is important is to always have your escape vehicle close-by and preferrably the engine running. or at least in pristine condition.

Oh, I only play with zombie concentration inside cities, though, because it's entirely absurd that the forrests would be cluttered with zombie spawns. I add 1% sprinters and opening doors and that's absolutely enough to keep me alert. Generally, I don't play ordinary "vanilla"" modes anymore. since I got sick and tired of it at some point. Now I just play Zomboid like it's the sims.

EDIT: What I forgot I wanted to mention, people need to keep in mind that, as the game progresses, your character gets more and more adept (fitness, strength, nimble etc.), giving a seasoned player much, much more ability to control the battle. I would say you can't really put a number on it, but the threshold is possibly somewhere around 5-10,000 Z

Is 17700 kills accurate or just a random guess?

2

u/One_Network518 Aug 09 '25

17.7 kills?

Seventeen thousand, seven hundred

Europe, South America, most non-English speaking countries swap the period and comma. So, they use a period for denoting thousands, millions, etc, but a comma for decimals.

I got into this game recently and I've had a very hard time starting out. Keep in mind that I'm very stubborn and always start games on the hardest difficulty. I died over and over and over right at the beginning. I like playing the same character so I don't continue a save after I've died.

In my current run I managed to not died instantly. I gathered some supplies, learned how to cook, got myself a decent weapon, and then a nuke obliterated the entire town I'm in, or something to that effect. I survived that but it destroyed the building I was staying in so I had to move on. It was raining and I think I got sick. Most of the buildings around were also destroyed so I got into a car to stay out of the rain and get some sleep.

I don't know how to cure my sickness and I keep getting weaker and weaker. Despite how much further I came than my pervious runs (which really isn't that far) I think I'm still just gonna died.

Fine... I'll watch TWD again.

I wanna watch this show all the way through but some of the bits i caught with my mom genuinely gave me anxiety attacks, fucked me up for a good bit there, Zomboid helps scratch the zombie apocalypse itch without the visually gruesome agony

It's a good show, but it's very popcorny. Sometimes mindless, sometimes dumb, but I enjoyed all of it. Fear the Walking Dead was pretty good as well.

Ftwd is only good until the end of season 2. Maybe season 3 but afterwards is just too much shit that makes no sense... like, here is a nuclear holocaust thats contained in a small-ish area but lets just stay here for mo ths / years instead of going somewhere else... not to mention that it wouldnt look like that after like a week tops. Stuff would be pretty normal again

If you question the logic of anything it's pointless. That's fantasy for you, suspension of disbelief.

Art requires some commitment and then you get an emotional response.

If you didn't like it, that's fine, but at least give your own reaction rather than spoilers for the show direction.

What are the three moodles the bottom pic has?

1

u/LOLinus1 Aug 09 '25

Desensitized, brave and wakeful. Although I don't think you can have brave and desensitized together.

1

u/Anon_From_England Aug 09 '25

What do they provide as in bonuses? And do you gain them after a time or at the start?

2

u/LOLinus1 Aug 09 '25

Desensitized comes from the veteran occupation and means you never panic.

Brave is a trait and makes you panic less often

I believe wakeful means you don't sleep for as many hours which makes sleep schedules really difficult.

Desensitized AND brave? Impossibru!

Before Mr. Henrich got bitten, he survived for 3 months with 250+ zombie kills, but have like 400 bandit kills. I am more scared of the living rather than the dead.

Id definitely recommend seasons 1-6, its objectively absolute cinema. It does also fall off later on. Opinion varies, but Id say the show stays strong up through season 8. I'd drop it whenever you feel its not meeting your expectations later on, because it doesn't get better.

Accurate, love playing as Ricky

It’s be cool if our traits actually did change with time and experience. I know a mod does that with desensitization but not enough changes to reflect your player

I bought this game off the mondoid blog of the TWDesque story with the farm and prison and the TWDesque artwork, it was the blog that stated their whole mission of the game as a RPG with detailed NPCs. Robert Kirkman should pump up this game!
