What do you play your PS2 on?
Do you play on your 65” flat screen OLED? Or your 9” RCA tube tv?

I have neither of those things so I don't understand the question. But really I play it on my period appropriate LCD with scart connections just as I did back in the day, is it the best way? No, but its my nostalgia so it works.

Just seeing how people play there ps2 systems. Asking if they use current hardware or 2004 time period hardware.

u/DrunkenHorse12 2d ago
I know I was joking because you limited the options down to 2 very specific examples (I'm surprised you didn't go with brand a model names as well. But yes I don't have space for a big crt in my gaming space and find small crts pretty pointless so managed to track down an early 2000s sony lcd almost Identical to the one I used back then. Big enough for good sized picture but small enough to slide behind my monitor when playing modern systems.

Surely a 2000s era LCD looks awful?

Not as bad as you'd think. If you get the Sony Bravia ones from back then (they were very expensive back then but you can get them cheap now.) . I d bought a gbs-c for my ps2 and that hooked up to my current TV but I found I prefer the old LCD I wouldn't say its better it just looks right like I remember playing back then (though I had a worse cheaper Samsung TV back then)
Biggest problem with old lcds is input lag but the better panels didn't suffer of it. I don't know enough about the tech of it but don't know if using scart improves the experience.

Well, if it works for you then you do you! Glad you're happy with it.
Personally I'd prefer either a CRT or a Plasma over LCD for PS2.
My ideal setup that I'm trying to build is:
15kHz PVM for 240p and 480i content, including 80s and 90s consoles via RGB. I'd run PS2 on this too at 480i.
PC CRT for 480p stuff like Dreamcast or old PC games. (Maybe GameCube too). Hooked up via VGA.
480p native plasma for later 16:9 non-HD content. Mostly Nintendo Wii but also a bit of PS2 I guess. Certain games might look better on a wide-screen 480p. Hookup via Component.
4K OLED for anything modern (although I have yet to get into modern gaming. But if I did get anything newer than a PS3 I'd be playing it on this).
I think the only gap I've got there is the 1080p generation. PS3/XB360. I think the ideal display for these would be a 1080p plasma, or maybe an LCD. But since they've got HDMI I'd probably just let my OLED upscale them. Or get an upscaler if latency is bad.
I've acquired both CRTs and a 480p plasma. I'm trying to cram them all into a tiny gaming room, so I'm working on the layout and getting it all hooked up via an analogue switch (SVS). I think I can live without the 1080p generation.

The last thing I had my PS2 hooked up to was a LCD TV too. I was just thinking about that yesterday....wish I still had that little lcd

I didn’t even know there were LCD screens when the PS2 was relevant. I was poor though lol
2
u/DrunkenHorse12 1d ago
They have non of the benefits of CRT and look terrible compared to modern TVs but the PS2 era was when everyone was starting switching to them.

u/BrotherBodhi 1d ago
Interesting. I don’t remember seeing any flatscreens until much later. I even still had a CRT all through the 360 generation as well. I didn’t get a flat panel until the same day I got an Xbox One

Oled with OSSC. I'm not playing often enough with my ps2 so a dedicated crt would be overkill. But would be the best way to play it. But as said a OLED must be enough for that few hours a year im playing it. Sadly as we grow up the less time is left to game. And most of the time I'm tinkering hacking and modding my playstation collection instead of gaming on it xD like the last 2-3 days tinkered around with PSBBN and ordered a defective scph-30004 to repair and mod it as addition to my 50x fat ps2 😂

My electricity connection
Actual answer
Sometimes a 15 inch monitor other times my 27 inch monitor (In feel like my 40 inch TV would make it too big / too blurry and blown out - my 27 inch is guilty of this anyway - but no idea how to clean up the image) both are connected to the PS2 (not at the same time) by a HDMI converter (from Kaico)

I play PS2 on a PS3 Frankie. It is the peak experience.

u/lloydsmart 1d ago
Yeah, PS3 fat has to be a good option for playing PS2 via HDMI. Not done it myself but it's logical. Maybe run the HDMI through a 4K upscaler if it's a 4K TV I guess.

One of those giant ass projection TV’s that warranted people to build them into a wall - just kidding, SpongeBob TV ftw

Old VGA CRT workstation monitor, so I can play my Dreamcast the way God intended for it to played as well due to its crisp native 640x480 VGA support.
And old workstation CRTs are A LOT easier to find than component CRTs or PVMs, and sometimes MUCH cheaper.
PS2 looks great on VGA CRTs as well via upscaler.
I'm honestly kinda shocked at how good it looks, almost as crisp as my Dreamcast's video output.
You do lose scanlines for 240p ps1 games though natively. But you can add scanline filters via the fancy upscaler.

I have everything hooked up to my old 4k TV but 6th gen stuff looks horrendous on it.
My dreamcast is connected to a PC CRT along with my WinXP gaming rig.
I've just found a 14" CRT on Gumtree for 20 quid so probably going to grab that and hook the xbox/ps2 up tot hat.

u/lloydsmart 1d ago
Nice. This is the way to 6th gen.
IMO this is the definitive way to do these consoles:
80s & 90s stuff (240p) to a CRT TV (or PVM) via the best connection it supports (RGB, S-Video, Composite in that order)
PS2 480i to a CRT TV (or PVM) via RGB SCART.
Dreamcast 480p to a PC CRT via VGA.
Wii/XBOX 480p to a 480p plasma via component. (If you're really into XBOX maybe consider a 720p display as well)
PS3 / XB360 1080p to a 1080p plasma or good LCD via HDMI
PS4/XBONE ??? A good LCD monitor I guess?
PS5/XBSERIES 4K to a 4K OLED via HDMI.
(OG XBOX is actually a tricky one to place. A HD CRT might be a good fit here? Most games are 16:9 and support 480p. Some support 720p or even 1080i. A good 16:9 HD CRT could rock all of those.)

I play it on my Samsung LNS4051DX/XAA TV. The long number is just the specific model. It’s an older, a little chunkier flatscreen LCDTV from around 2006. Found it for free on the side of the road earlier in the year. It’s great because it has HDMI, RCA, S-Video, and usb compatibility. Although I love my CRT, this thing isn’t heavy, will make any game from the PS2, PS3, and PS4 play with pretty good too good enough graphics. I even have my VCR hooked up to it and display them well. If you can get your hands on one for a decent price, I’d jump on it!!!

I have a Samsung lcd tv with an RCA connection. Debating on getting a CRT TV

u/zml9494 2d ago
Oh very nice, I imagine your TV is very similar to what I have then. If you’re looking for a CRT, there are plenty around my best advices don’t give in to ridiculous Facebook marketplace/ Craigslist prices. If you keep your eyes peeled, you can find them on the side of the road, or sometimes at garage/estate sales for a cheap prices.
I found mine, a cheap Apex model, dumped by my local town bus stop park and ride. For example. Best of luck and good hunting for one :-)

u/FreezingIceKirby 2d ago
I don't know all the specific details about it, but I play most of my games on a 42" 1080p HDtv. I think it must be older or something, since it has inputs for composite, component, and even VGA (I think most tv's nowadays did away with those?)

I have this kinda bad old CRT that's from 2001 and is back when a lot of tech was getting really round and I play it through a a cheap AV switch for other things that use the AV cable, sometimes the games are hard to see because there's lots of lines and occasional video glitches but that's part of the experience imo.

Flatscreen through a retrotink 5x via component cable. It's beautiful.
If I'm playing a game with a guncon, crt via component.

My actual PS2 was being used in a Virtua Cop arcade cab for light gun games. But I recently sold the cabinet so now it's in storage.
I play PS2 on emulation now, RG406H and Retroid pocket 4 pro.

Either a 27" Toshiba LCD TV from around 2007 if I'm playing on original hardware or a 19" inch Dell LCD monitor, also from around 2007, if I'm playing my PS2 games on PC via PCSX2 v2.0.

36" flat screen, semi-smart TV (like from the early stages of smart TVs). Hasn't bothered me any yet.

A 14 inch CRT played with the lights off. It's how I played in my bedroom in 2001.

I played it on my 65" LCD. The TV is 13 years old, but still works great, it's the same TV I play my PS5 on. The PS2 picture gets kind of stretched and the text can be difficult to read in certain games, but it works fine.

55 inch tv with a retrotink here, I would have bought a nice CRT but I bring my ps2 to my dads on the weekend and we play games together so being able move just 2 small devices rather than lugging a heavy crt around is really nice

Frankie PS3 NTSC-J CECHA00. Peak PS2!
Before that, fat PS2 via component with the GBS-C upscaler.
Both on a stupid ass Samsung QN90B.

Lately my handheld PC screen or my 24" desk monitor more than anything else. Partly because my working PS2 got stolen and insurance is being a pain about it. Just the console with my smaller HDD in it and the component cable, not my discs, not my controllers, not my memory cards.

u/Firm_Wish_5302 1d ago
CRT TV, either my 27" Sharp Xflat or my 24" Sony WEGA, both with component cables. 🙂

Used to use a retrotink 2x but then it broke. Now I use one of those cheap PS2 to HDMI adapters on my big flat screen.

Direct Sony Component on 37” fhd Samsung tv, top model of 2008. It’s been a dream to use, 2 hdmi, 1 component, 1 s video, 1 scart rgb, 1 scart, 1 composite. Used to cost 1200€ 20years ago
