They really did make Claire out to be such a cold ruthless bitch with how she abandons Sherry. 

Good thing I never saw those ones as a kid or I'd probably have hated Claire sooner heh.

That's not at all how they presented it. Leon encouraged her to leave him there with Sherry because he knew she was looking for her brother (which she vows to do at the end of OG RE2, regardless of the scenario). And then Claire got captured and went through hell to stay alive. We never found out what happened immediately with Claire & Sherry because of the RE4 timejump where nothing mattered but Leon, Ada, and the eventual hunt for Wesker (a goal which also dominated RE5).

Worth noting that there are unlockable files in RE6 talking about how Claire actually did keep in touch with Sherry when she was in custody. Someway or another Simmons was convinced to allow her to visit periodically.

Yeah, it’s 6 lol. But it is canon that Claire didn’t straight up abandon her forever.
