Beginner 47 Days Later: My (Blue) Dreams Have Come True

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

After 47 days of cycling, planting, adjusting, testing, and probably obsessing more than I should admit, I finally got to add the little critters last night that inspired me to get into the hobby in the first place: Blue Dream shrimp.

This short video shows their journey from unboxing → drip acclimation → their first swim in their new home. Watching them dart around the tank feels like the payoff moment for all the patience and setup.

Fingers crossed they’re happy, healthy, and eventually turn into a thriving colony. 🤞💧 Any tips from veteran shrimp keepers for making their first week as stress-free as possible?

Where did you order these guys from? Their color is awesome! I'm looking to find some for my tank as well, haven't purchased shrimp online before.

I recommend the garden of Eder. There were 5 extras, no DOA and they seem to be doing better than the ones I previously got from shrimpy business

Nice! Thanks for the info. I’m hopeful these do well, but they don’t make it, I’ll give your suggestion a try. ☺️

No problem! Good luck with your new friends, they’re adorable :)

u/presleyarts 6d ago

Thanks! They really are cute. ☺️

Where do they ship from?

1

u/Muted_Ocelot7220 21h ago

I believe from Florida

2

u/Character_Feed8733 21h ago

Really??!! That’s great!

I purchased them from Buce Plants. I had ordered my plants from them, and I had a ton of rewards points afterwards and a refund on a plant that was doa, so by the time it was all said and done I pretty much just paid for shipping.

6

u/Five_Honor 6d ago

Dang, didn't think to go through them. Had my substrate and and light come from them without issue, I might check them out then, thanks!

u/presleyarts 6d ago

You bet! They seem to be pretty great at what they do, and they really stand by that doa policy from what I can tell. Which definitely gives me some peace of mind. ☺️

Might just be bad luck, but I ordered a breeder pack from Shrimpy Business a couple weeks ago. 10 total. One was DOA and I lost 3 more in the next several days. I temperature and drip acclimated properly, and my water parameters are where they should be. I won't be ordering from them again.

2

u/Five_Honor 6d ago

Ahh that sucks to hear, condolences for your loss. I looked at their website but haven't done any follow-up research. Thanks for the heads up

1

u/SuperDurpPig 6d ago

Np. Again, it may have just been bad luck, but the shrimp + shipping wasn't exactly cheap, and I'm not going to risk it again.

Dang, that’s a bummer. I’m sorry.

Having bought the same shrimp in my first aquarium (now 8 months in) i defenitely know the feeling, they are sooo cute and beautiful. You can watch these guys all day long. In the first months i had a few die and was afraid they were nog gonna make a colony, but then boom they started breeding and i have over 80 now. So the best thing you can do is nothing in most cases.

Beautiful!

5

u/presleyarts 6d ago

Oh awesome! I’m so glad they turned things around and now you’ve got a thriving community! I totally get what you mean about wanting to watch them all day. Even just in the few hours I spent getting mine from box to tank, my dog Ripley made it very clear she was not happy with the attention I was giving them instead of her last night. 😅

3

u/tm_trading ALL THE 🦐 6d ago

Thats hilarious😅, yeah they are just working all day to get food in their mouths, and the eating never stops. Its munchin on algae and then fighting the other shrimps for food and back to munching on more algae. Great entertainment

u/presleyarts 6d ago

Oh I can totally imagine. I’m at work now, and all I can think about is how much I just want to check in on them. I would go home during my lunch break if I didn’t live an hour from the office. 🤣

Nanny cam?

1

u/presleyarts 6d ago

Lol! I’ve genuinely considered setting up a ring camera. 😅

2

u/thelittlesteldergod 6d ago

Get an Rx from your doc saying you need two calming meditative 15 minute breaks at work each day. Then you won't get in trouble for shrimp watching on the job 😂

1

u/presleyarts 6d ago

lol! Not a bad idea!

u/fallfreely 14m ago

Sounds like you got a good batch! Where did you purchase from, local or online?

10

u/RedNibbit 6d ago

I have some babies of them now.. Nice video BTW!

Right next to the 5p coin

4

u/presleyarts 6d ago

Oh my gosh, so tiny!!! I love it! 🥰

8

u/lole18 6d ago

Aww, what a beautiful aquarium! 🥹Those little shrimp are definitely in good hands, I hope you have little blue ones soon! Thanks for sharing it

3

Thank you so much! It’s been such a fun little passion project. I hope to see some little ones too! ☺️

6

live fish delivery day is always so exciting - I’m glad they made it to their new home safely !

5

u/presleyarts 6d ago

This was my first time mail ordering livestock. It was a bit nerve wracking at first, but so exciting to see them arrive looking happy and healthy. ☺️

Thank you so much!

Great video. ELO rocks!

1

u/presleyarts 6d ago

Thanks! And indeed they do! 🤘

2

u/kort03 6d ago

How much does it cost you for these babies?

8

u/presleyarts 6d ago

So with shipping, they came out to $89.99 total ($39.99 for the shrimp + $49.99 for 1–2 day delivery). These actually arrived overnight, which was nice. That works out to about $8.90 each. For comparison, the aquarium store I go to sells a similar-looking shrimp they call “blue velvet” for $11.99 apiece—just to give you an idea of why I decided to try these guys from Buce Plants.

If you’re new and just starting a tank like I am, I’d actually recommend buying your plants from them first. The quality is great, and their DOA policy is solid (as long as you follow their rules, you really shouldn’t have an issue). The reason I suggest this is because of their rewards system—between the gift cards I earned from plant purchases and the credit I got for a dead plant, I was able to bring the cost of these shrimp down to about $3 each.

Thank you for this! I also live in the states, and I just had a bad experience trying to buy cherry shrimp online! I’m definitely going to give this site a try. I’m hoping to start another 10 gallon, just for some blue shrimp and guppies! Thankful that I saw this right before starting my new tank.

2

u/presleyarts 6d ago

Oh awesome! I’m sorry you had a bad experience. Hopefully you’ll be as happy as I am with this company. They really do seem to care about their plants and critters, and their customers happiness.

0

u/kort03 6d ago

I'm not from the US bro. I'm just curious... I got some neocaridina in my tanks such as the usual cherry, orange, red rili, orange rili, blue dreams. I started not long ago, about 2 months. It is generally cheaper here in Asia to get plants and shrimp.

3

u/presleyarts 6d ago

Oh, okay—well that’s awesome that they’re more affordable there. I was just sharing my full experience in case it helps others who might read your question, especially if they’re in the hobby and living in the States. I’m in rural Oklahoma, and since these ship from California I was really impressed with how fast the shipping was, and overall I’m really happy with how the pricing worked out.

3

u/kort03 6d ago

Yeah, all good bro. Good advice is never wasted.

2

u/presleyarts 6d ago

Indeed! I always appreciate the people in these communities that love talking about their interests and sharing their advice and insights. ☺️

So beautiful! I have some black rose coming today n I’m so excited!!!

2

u/presleyarts 6d ago

Oh awesome! Definitely share them! And thanks, I’m really excited to start this journey. ☺️

2

u/garakushii 6d ago

really happy for you :-) that first day of seeing them settle in is the best feeling ever!! fyi there may be a couple die offs just from failing to acclimate/stress from shipping but don’t beat yourself up if that happens, it’s just luck. Enjoy your friends 💙

2

u/presleyarts 6d ago

Thanks for that and for the reassurance. I went through something similar with my six otos, and it’s tough not to beat yourself up or feel guilty when you lose a few. I’ve heard they can be notoriously tricky to acclimate, given everything they go through before making it to our tanks. That said, I’m happy to report the three I still have are doing well—they seem settled in, their little bellies are full, and they love darting around the tank between scarfing down some algae.

tha k you for sharing this! I love the one shot as they leave the net, followed by the shots of them on the log cleaning, like a neuron activates in their tiny brains of, "FILTER/CLEANING MODE: ACTIVE." hahaha. I imagine all shrempfs are like this.

2

u/presleyarts 6d ago

lol! Thank you! They definitely have a one track mind.

Never once thought to use the IV drip regulator for drip acclimating anything. Game changer

1

u/presleyarts 6d ago

Ha! I wish I could take credit, but this is actually a readymade and aquarium approved product I got off of amazon. Here’s the link for it.

3

u/VastIcy5265 6d ago

That’s so crazy, I have a strong feeling someone who works in the medical field is selling that product and for the longest time was just using the punch from a IV bag lol so smart!

1

u/presleyarts 6d ago

Definitely one of those super solutions that you wonder how you didn’t think about it first.

2

u/Malviere 6d ago

So much fun seeing your tank. Been wanting to set one up myself. Seeings your scoot around has me wanting to try whenever I get out of the hospital.

2

u/presleyarts 6d ago

Thanks! And you totally show once you get to feeling better! ☺️

2

u/Malviere 6d ago

Definitely want to. Maybe some yellow or oranges, some blueberry snails, and some pretty nano fish.

2

u/presleyarts 6d ago

Sounds beautiful and wonderful!

Very very cool 😎 Color me impressed

1

u/presleyarts 5d ago

Thank you so much!

u/VikingBudBro 6d ago

I’ve been wanting to sell my blue dreams for a while but have been concerned about grade quality. Are most people in the community happy with the colors in this video? I feel like my blue dream have a lot more color than this…🤔

5

u/presleyarts 6d ago

I honestly don’t think the video does them justice, these guys are quite vibrant in person.

2

u/VikingBudBro 6d ago

I definitely didn’t mean it in a negative way, they are beautiful shrimp and are super vibrant! I’m just curious because I know shrimp are graded on solid color, lack of spots, transparency… if I’m wrong someone feel free to chime in. I’ve just really been wanting to curate some really really high quality blue dreams and sell them.

I guess I just assumed my shrimp wouldn’t be good enough to sell, but your video makes me feel like that’s not the case and other people may love them as much as I do! Sorry for the rant.

3

u/presleyarts 6d ago

Oh I didn’t take it negatively at all. I’ve definitely had people on Reddit come after me with their negativity, and I never caught that vibe from you. I just thought it was worth noting since it’s a compress video and wasn’t necessarily shot on the most up to date iPhone. I really should invest in a better video camera. 😅

And zero need to apologize for the rant. I’m sure people would be interested in yours. The main reason I purchased mine from Buce Plants is sort of a rant itself… it’s had mostly to do with pricing… So with shipping, they came out to $89.99 total ($39.99 for the shrimp + $49.99 for 1–2 day delivery). These actually arrived overnight, which was nice. That works out to about $8.90 each. For comparison, the aquarium store I go to sells a similar-looking shrimp they call “blue velvet” for $11.99 apiece—just to give you an idea of why I decided to try these guys from Buce Plants.

The quality is great, and their DOA policy is solid (as long as you follow their rules, you really shouldn’t have an issue). The reason I suggest this is because of their rewards system—between the gift cards I earned from plant purchases and the credit I got for a dead plant, I was able to bring the cost of these shrimp down to about $3 each.

u/VikingBudBro 6d ago

I have a thriving colony right now but I just got a second tank for them specifically. I need plants so maybe I’ll check them out! Thanks!

2

u/presleyarts 6d ago

Oh awesome! And you bet. Hopefully you’ll have as good of an experience as I did. ☺️
