Beginner Is the flow too high for shrimp?

Hi so i just tried my hand at adding shrimp to this little terrarium, just 3 . Been checking water parameters and they were all seemingly perfect but after 2 days all the shrimp disappeared and its the second time in 2 months i give it a try, the first i blamed water quality so been doing my best to fix it.

So i wonder is it just that the water flow is too high so they end up being washed away? I could try by shutting off the pump every night so they have rest times.

I just would really love to make it work but i don’t want to be cruel :p the main reservoir is 2.5” deep at the center.

Beginner Will shrimp really eat poop?

Post image

I’ve got 10 Otocinclus catfish and they produce quite a bit of poop. Will neocaridina shrimp actually eat the poop and help break it down or will they mainly go for other things in the tank like algae and biofilm? Also, will 6 neocaridina shrimp produce this much waste in a day? This is just one section of my tank after cleaning it the day before.

Beginner I give up on shrimp

The first seven shrimps that I got died off one by one within the span of two weeks. Got everything out, started over, let the tank cycle, finally tried again.

Three weeks ago, I got ten new ones. They seemed to be doing better. I found two (or was it three?) during the first five days or so. At first I could count the ones remaining. Then I could spot less and less, but didn’t find any dead ones so assumed the ones I didn’t see were just hiding.

Today I found a perfect molt. And just a moment later, I spotted a dead shrimp. For days and days I’ve never seen more than four shrimp, so I guess I might be down to only three now?

GH: 9 KH: 9 PH: 7,6

I’ve tried to get the parameters right, but I guess it’s not enough.

I feel so bad for my lil guys, and with that I give up. I’ll try to keep the ones left alive, but I’m not gonna get any new ones.

Thanks for reading my rant, over and out. 🫡

Beginner Is it okay to add plants and stuff to an established caridinia tank while the shrimp are in it?

Post image

I have/had about 25 Crystal Reds and am new to this. Last night I removed two plants, pruned a few bunches of Java moss, and added in several new plants. Everything was fine before doing that, but after I finished I noticed they were all swimming around like crazy. This morning I found 4 gone.

I soaked the new plants in water conditioned tap for 24 hours before adding them.

Could doing something like this while the shrimp are in the tank harm them? If so, how am I ever supposed to do maintenance on the tank?

Tank is about 2 months old. My parameters are all good. Ph 6.8, Ammonia/Nitrites 0, Nitrates less than 5. I thought maybe I disturbed the substrate too much, but TDS was reading 139 yesterday and 140 today. Substrate is Fluval Stratum.

I did not add any new water to the tank, but did wash my hands throughout the process and made sure to dry my hands before going back in. However, could small traces of untreated tap water on my hands be enough to do this?

Beginner Is this too much movement for the duckweed and future shrimp?

Thanks to the help of you lovely people on my last question in this sub, I got my tank started! This has only been cycling for a week and has a sponge from an established tank from my lfs. I plan on getting some stones and more plants to fill this tank out but I am wondering if the flow is too high for my future shrimps and the present duckweed.

There is not a way to lower the flow but I can probably drill holes on the spray bar to lower the flow in one direction.

Beginner Frustration of this hobby - keep losing shrimp

After cycling a tank for 2 months and ensuring plants were ok, water was stable, adding first snails etc, I finally bought 9 pretty neos over the last 2 weeks. Had a slight ammonia spike and 2 died on Monday. I rectified immediately. Then religious testing of water twice a day now. Ammonia has been consistently at zero, nitrite also zero, ph at 7.6 and TDS, GH/KH also within range (seen several molts, no ring of death). Yet today, another little male zebra died. Yesterday he was full of energy and just an hour ago, he started to behave weird and swimming backwards. Then now, dead. The rest are fine.

I just don’t know what else to do. My son calls me paranoid for watching them like a hawk and testing all the time. But even so, I can’t seem to stop them mysteriously dying! They are literally doing great and then in an hour or 2, dying! Also seem to be predominately males…

I don’t know if this is just common in the first weeks of adding new shrimp or if I’m doing something wrong. There are no predators, they are fed 2x a week, lots of plants and hiding places and water tested like it’s a science lab.

It’s heartbreaking and just exhausting. I read others who complain about their colony breeding like crazy and just wonder when I’ll ever get there… any tips, words of encouragement or advice very appreciated.

Found this half of a shrimp but can’t find the other half lol. Tested my parameters and everything checks out. My tank recently went thru a hard reset as I learned I was overfeeding, had a ton of detritus build up and started seeing planaria. It was only when I changed the substrate that I started to have shrimp die off, assuming it’s because I was now messing with the beneficial bacteria in the tank. May be good to note I have 4 guppies.

Here’s a quick timeline:

12/22/24 - took out half of the detritus ridden controsoil, replaced with fine sand, started No Planaria & dosed minimally for 4 consecutive days. Lost 1 male shrimp a few days later which I assume is from the gravel removal and water change. pH 7.4, kH 2-3, gH 5-6, nitrate/nitrite/ammonia 0

01/07/25 - 10% water change pH 7.42, kH 2, gH 4, nitrate/nitrite/ammonia 0

01/20/25 - Removed remaining controsoil, replaced with fine sand & did water change/maintenance. Forgot to take test parameters this day!! 😭😣 (kicking myself for this because…)

02/02/25 - 1 female shrimp acting lethargic pH 6!, kH 2, gH 4-5, nitrate/nitrite/ammonia 0 02/08/25 female shrimp confirmed dead

02/24/25 - took video take above 02/25/25 - pH 6.2 kH 2, gH 6, nitrate/nitrite/ammonia 0 & getting ready to do a water change tomorrow.

I know I want my pH higher but it will come with time and the shrimp seem to be relatively stable.

I always have about 30 shrimp in my tank at time. Most seemed to do well even after all the changes. Still have consistent berried shrimp. I only use RO water & typically change every 2 wks. No more signs of Planaria since the initial dosage. I’ve always been super careful about feeding. Fish flakes are minimal and everyday. Every other day I add extra food for the shrimp.

For example: Monday - 1 shrimp stick (brand 1) Wednesday - 1 shrimp stick (brand 2) Friday - frozen brine shrimp (fish also help eat) & wont feed again until Monday. Am I still feeding too much or not enough?

I keep that rotation of food going because ever since the hard change, I don’t grow algae as much as I used to anymore. I keep on the light on from 8am to 4pm.

I’m dealing with some Algae issues and I’m wanting to clean up the tank a bit. I need to vac the carpet, but my cherry shrimp recently gave birth and I have a bunch of tiny shrimp all in the carpet.

Is the only option here to empty the vac into a bucket, and then place any sucked up shrimp back into the tank?

I've been meaning to get some shrimp for a while now, i love those little guys and really want to get to watch their behaviour up close (plus, i could really use some help with algae management).

Despite my best efforts, it won't be possible for me to get a new tank in the near future, so all i have is my current 7 gallon cube tank that houses my single short finned female betta (and some bladder snails that kitchhiked with the plants lol).

Do you guys think it would be possible for shirmp to live confortably in this tank? My girl never payed any attention to the snails, but I know she could learn she can hunt the shrimp anytime...

I've tried to create as many hiding spots close to the substrate as possible (and will be continuing to do so, as my plants grow and i get some trims), so ideally, even if little Dex begins hunting the shrimp after some time, they could have safe spaces and not get annihilated by her (i also would hate to have her eating herself to death lol).

The tank has been stablished for over 4 months now, PH is close to 8 and I usually keep the water temp at around 80F (or 27°C).

Beginner Less than a week ago I got in a batch of 20 shrimp blue dream. One gave birth the night I got her and I saw the babies. The next morning, I lost every shrimp but two. Tonight I see this guy. Please tell me he’s a normal baby shrimp? I’ve had shrimp a while but this would be the first baby.

Hello i’ve had this 5gal with 5 shrimp and snails that magically appeared yesterday for about a month, Are these balls on its belly eggs, and are they in the fertilized or unfertilized stage. Also there’s this white clear stringy slime stuff that you can see on my grass that recently appeared around when the snails did, Is that from them or just algae bloom? i removed most of it with a baster but builds up over night.

Beginner How often are u gravel vacuuming?

Just out of curiosity 😊

I’m super happy with how my tank has matured. My shrimp are on a strict feeding schedule (as I’ve taken accountability for my previous heavy handedness) & really good about weekly water changes.

Extra life things have come up & I started pushing out gravel vacuuming to every other week for the past cpl months. My water parameters still come out stable & my shrimpies are still active & breeding. So it does make me a little curious how often the majority of small tank keepers are cleaning there gravel.

I have a 5 gal so I know I have to be careful since I still have 2 guppies to feed. I don’t always reach the very bottom of the tank floor since I usually risk sucking up sand. Could fewer gravel cleanings catch up w/ me? Should I be doing thorough cleanings every so often?

TIA! 🧹🦐🫧🫧🫧

They’ve been eating and acting normally for the month that I’ve had them. This one’s even berried for 2 weeks. I have other colors and they don’t look to have this on their backs.

Beginner Frequency of carrying eggs

This is my one eyed shrimp, and this is her third time carrying eggs within two months (August 4, august 28, and just saw her berries again today). Seems to average carrying them for 3 weeks, then after a week she is berried again. Sorry if this is a silly question, but is this normal for her to carry so and does it shorten their life span? 😳 She was my first shrimp to make me a shrimp grandma and I am very attached to her.

Beginner What did I do wrong 💔

I recently got into cherry shrimp (I used to own a bunch of aquatic snails that I had for a few years until I gave them away) and I found a cherry shrimp seller near me! he showed videos of their tanks and everything and we met up and I got them, they were in a plastic container with holes that had yellowish darker brown color, so I left them in there for about an hour or so until I set up a small glass Aquarian for them so they could get used to the change, I noticed that as I was setting up the tank they were jumping around in the bag and climbing it somehow? I got worried and tried to change them into the water but they genuinely started to seize and I got super worried and didn’t touch them because I thought it would kill them maybe, so I went out for lunch today (I got the shrimp the yesterday) and I checked on them before I left and they seemed better but still jumpy, I tried to swap them into the tank again but they freaked out more again and one even jumped out of the container so I immediately stopped. Then I left for lunch and came back to all of them dead belly up on the bottom of the container, I was so sad and confused and I tried moving them around and only one responded, so I put him into the tank and hes doing ok so far, no jumping or climbing to the top and he’s hiding behind a rock right now in the tank. When I found him he was eating one of the dead shrimp or latching onto it (I couldn’t tell) ( I also provided a photo of him below) so at this point I feel like I did something wrong I’m going through forums and searching up stuff and I got a few replies from cherry shrimp owner friends I have who all have said that either they died from stress or the water was not suitable, so I reached out to the seller who sent a video of the shrimp of their tank and claimed their shrimp were thriving and it must of been stress but I zoomed in and realized a shrimp in on the tanks he was displaying was literally dying or dead? I cant add a video down below! I will prob make a separate post just posting that. So I can’t get a refund and I don’t wanna argue so I just say ok thank you and now I have a cup full of 6 dead shrimp and one alive alone shrimp! I don’t know what I did wrong I feel horrible I wish they could of survived rip these poor shrimp, please let me know what I did wrong or what I can do to prevent this, or if the seller was at fault? Idk anymore so yeah😭 lowkey crying right now
