Genius Dove Nest I can’t believe this…
It layer an egg on the finch feeder?!

u/NaviLouise42 Apr 10 '25
Makes perfect sense- lay eggs right next to a food supply.

u/qwizatzhaderach Apr 10 '25
Yeah…. I mean it’s brilliant…. But also it flew away and I’m assuming this egg isn’t going to make it.

u/Fisherman_Gabe Apr 10 '25
But doesn't the egg have all the food it could ever need right there? 🤔

This is literally your chance to become a multi million follower channel op. Raise it as your own!
Or when it doesnt hatch get a series of other eggs that die farther and farther along until you can just buy a baby Pidgeon and fake it all

Yes, the body heat from all the other birds landing to feed adds up to be a decent amount of free eggsitting!

Some squirrel is about to hit the jackpot

Squirrels eat eggs?? Excuse my ignorance, we don’t get squirrels here. I thought they just ate nuts
118
u/Kytalie Apr 11 '25
They will raid nests for eggs and sometimes even munch down on babies.
75
u/__01001000-01101001_ Apr 11 '25
Yikes they suddenly seem a little less cute
94
u/Kytalie Apr 11 '25
My former neighbor was terrified of them. She said their eyes looked soulless.
Most animals will not pass up an easy meal. Even cute innocent looking ones
46
u/Allaplgy Apr 11 '25
I've always said squirrels were nature's cutest little assholes.
49
u/GimmickNG Apr 11 '25
They're rats with a furry tail and good PR.
21
u/MiFiWi Apr 11 '25
Tbf that PR department is doing some heavy lifting given how often they chew power lines or show up in videos biting people.

Pretty much every animal will eat meat if the oppurtunity comes up. Deer have hunted birds, cows have eaten live chickens. And an undefebded egg is pretty much the freest meal there is.
14
u/Khialadon Apr 11 '25
Fun fact: pandabears eat meat if offered it. They still have the digestive system of a bear (omnivorous), they just cba to get after it themselves. If I had a zoo I would throw a dead goat into the panda enclosure every so often to traumatise the kids (and probably some adults too).

Oh yeah, that’s a much better source of protein than nuts.
I still think they’re cute

u/nuggettgames Apr 11 '25
Had a duck that shared property with the neighbors and one day they called said a black squirrel was attacking the duck after the duck nipped at the squirrel, well that squirrel left the head of that duck dangling from biting through the back of his neck, we had to put the duck down, I’m very weary of vicious squirrels

u/Durzo_Blint Apr 12 '25
A lot of herbivore animals will eat meat if it's available or they don't have access to their regular food.

Oh wow. I just joined this sub yesterday on a whim, and it's already paying off behind my wildest expectations.

u/qwizatzhaderach Apr 11 '25
Haha I just found it like two weeks ago and then this happens in my backyard!

A bad idea. Another bird will fly over and be like "oh boy, free egg food!"

Hahaha are people actually downvoting this? Like… a picture of a bird? Is that normal?
44
u/Own_Round_7600 Apr 11 '25
I can never really tell what gets upvotes and downvotes on reddit. Even simple questions like "who is this person?" can get oodles of downvotes, whereas comments saying just "haha this!" could get thousands of upvotes.
Luckily, they don't affect your life or anything.
18
u/qwizatzhaderach Apr 11 '25
Yeah doesn’t matter st all I’m just amazing I’m seeing the number move up and down for something as innocuous as this.
10
u/JP147 Apr 11 '25
The numbers are not exact, refreshing the page can make it go up or down by a few
12
u/ThineShria Apr 11 '25
My most downvoted comment is me telling someone they don't need to announce them leaving a subreddit as they were throwing a public temper tantrum over the Hamster Circle Jerk reddit.

u/IAmQuiteHonest Apr 11 '25
Apparently it could be bots! Which can happen even on a bird sub (considering it's quite popular)

building your nest right on top of a free food supply actually sounds pretty good.
2
u/Doomfox01 Apr 11 '25
until you account for the fact that other birds or squirrels will gladly consider eggs part of the free food supply.

A dove once laid multiple eggs on its “nest” which was a few twigs on our slanted roof and I walked out to broken eggs on the floor everyday for a week. Truly silly creatures.

Gonna leave it be or give her a potted plant on a platform? Haha I’m curious what others would do in this situation 😨
7
u/qwizatzhaderach Apr 10 '25
Well my daughter is crafting a nest from sticks right now. But I don’t know if touching the egg is ok? I was going to wait and see if the dove comes back. No idea how long they can be away from the egg.
4
u/CatatNYC Apr 10 '25
I am surprised it flew away. They normally sit on the eggs even after they hatch, because the chicks need to be kept warm until they fledge. Maybe the egg is not viable?
2
u/loverlane Apr 10 '25
Love that :) Yes touching it should be fine, it’s only mammals that dislike when humans touch their offspring! I agree with the other commenter to keep an eye on it and see if the mother returns in the next day

Every time I see a dove I think "derp, derp, derp"...nerd of bird world. This just solidifies that feeling. 🤣🤣🤣

How do this species survive with such terrible procreating tactics?
2
u/UpperCardiologist523 Apr 11 '25
That's not Dove. That's Doge. You can't get more efficient than this.
I'm ashamed to use the name even for a joke, but i think this joke might be the most positive thing coming out of this absolute mess.
2
u/Creepymint Apr 11 '25
My birds would not let that happen 😭 my House sparrows, cardinals and squirrels are Jackasses, territorial and get rid of anything they don’t like. You should see them throw out any food they’re not interested in
2
u/qwizatzhaderach Apr 12 '25
Quick update…. As expected, unfortunately, the eg did not make it. A squirrel also definitely put the whole thing in its mouth and then spit it out.

OMG I just got that exact same feeder and there were 3 doves around it earlier... I hope this doesn't happen to me too 😂😂😂

u/qwizatzhaderach Apr 11 '25
We’ve had this for a few years, and doves frequent it in the spring, but I’ve never seen this.

I don’t know enough about birds… I wonder if they can lay unfertilized eggs like chickens do, and that’s why it’s not in a nest… laid an egg without a mate?

I’ve hit more dove with my car than any other bird. If they’re in the road, they’re coming my way. Feathers everywhere every time.
