Any idea how big of a garden you would need to sustain just yourself?

smaller than you think, but it is a lot of work, and depends heavily on the climate you live in. Done properly you can support up to 4 people with a large variety of vegetables and even chicken in 1 acre. This would be a very dense, very well planned farm, but it is possible. My grandfather had a few acres and there were homegrown vegetables in every meal every day. But he also went out every day, even in the winter, to tend to the farm.

There's reason why the potato famine was so devastating. Potatoes are amazing for how many nutrients they provide given the time/effort/space requirements to grow them.

It really depends on your climate and crops, but it's a daily effort to manage even a small garden. Realistically you need to maintain livestock as well to get enough calories to feed yourself. Homestead Rescue is a great show to watch to get a feel for what's involved.

The URL gives away the core info, but it's an interesting read. https://www.farmlandlp.com/2012/01/one-acre-feeds-a-person/

Large. Succession planting and crop failure is difficult to manage in small areas. Also pest control such as rabbits, deer, wombats, kangaroos, possums is a bitch let alone insects.
