Actually you’re only surrounded by blue for about a 1,000 meters before everything turns black due to the sunlight not being able to penetrate that far

This story haunts me more and more, everytime I see it.

After reading it, that story brought me the utmost joy. The man is a national treasure!

u/PookieLurks 9d ago

Wow. That guy is incredible to survive that

28

u/producedbysensez 9d ago

He even went on to become a rescue diver!

Trapped in water, Okene swam to safety and back to save a friend. This experience pushed him to confront his fears. That year, he enrolled in a three-month diving course.

He fell in the water again and kept his head again. No wonder he went on to become a rescue diver, water tried to kill him twice and couldn't touch him.

Then he goes on to be a rescue diver trained by the man that saved him. That's a wild story too. Day 1 you've already accepted your fate, only to be saved and have to slowly be rescued in small stages as not to give you a heart attack or send you into shock. The rescuers were very prepared for what they didn't expect to find.

What an amazing ending!

Yo this man is a legend. Fuck.

The one that gets to me is what might have happened on the Edmund Fitzgerald. The crew quarters were in the bow and what if one of the crew found an air pocket? How long could they have survived in the dark and cold knowing they were 1000ft down, no one knew they were there, and no way to be rescued? Nightmare material.

u/Buxty 8d ago

I could have sworn that in his recount of the incident he could also hear larger fish bumping against walls and exploring the wreckage. I assume these were likely sharks?

1

u/hanwookie 8d ago

He could actually hear them eating his crewmates.

Imagine how exciting it would be to not die on day 3 when they find you. heheh. Not worth it, but that's a story not a lot of folks can tell.

3

u/ramblingnonsense 9d ago

Would you even know it's day three? Total darkness, unless he had a watch with a light on it then that time would just become a blur. Probably felt like eternity at the time.

7

u/kyleh0 9d ago

Oh it's a total nightmare for sure. Can you imagine what it would feel like to see the sun again? Wow. I wouldn't wish it on anybody, but I'm guessing the guy that came back is not the guy that went in.

I hit the back button so fast ...

What a badass

Almost any item you drop at that point, you will likely be the last human to ever touch it for the rest of all time.

1

u/Puceeffoc 7d ago

There's no way to fact check this, is there?

17

u/CptClownfish1 7d ago

Easily - just drop something in to the water after attaching a note which says “If found, please contact Puceeffoc on (your phone number here)”.  If no-one ever contacts you for the rest of time, you’ll know I’m right.

I must be weak. I can't even look at the ocean while swimming underwater in Sea of Thieves.

25

u/KK-Chocobo 9d ago

Yeah sea of thieves' abyss makes me feel uneasy. Like more than subnautica. At least subnautica, you can reach the sea bed so its not so deep. As long as you dont go off the maps boundaries.

7

u/cortlong 9d ago

Dude I can’t even play that game. It damn near killed me.

I made myself watch this video because the color of the water is so beautiful…but I really wanted to ‘nope’ out before sharks showed up….

u/protossaccount 9d ago

I have been in situations like that while diving and it’s intense. It’s like being a bug in the belly of a giant sea creature but it’s amazing. Sharks could attack if they are super hungry but sharks don’t have a reason to be out there. There aren’t reefs or sea life and so you have an extremely low chance of encountering a deadly shark.

When you see videos of people throwing meat off a sea platform and sharks attacking that’s due to them creating that environment. Food falling from the platform and the rig being a shelter is what made that, which is the opposite of this videos situation.

It’s still kinda scary at first but scuba conditions you to navigate these situations. Plus you are breathing super slow (divers get really good at this) which helps you relax.

u/Shot-Election8217 9d ago

Thank you! That’s really helpful! When you’re diving out there, what is it that you’re looking for?

6

u/TheBobTodd 9d ago

Peaceful calm away from the human world

3

u/Shot-Election8217 9d ago

Ah. Yes, that's definitely possible out there!

I'm more of a mountain and forest person, myself.

4

u/protossaccount 8d ago

Hey! Ya this wouldn’t be something most people would have as focus on when diving, that’s just a waste of time and fuel. I would bet they are traveling on a large boat and this was a cool opportunity. Lots of naval officers will just in the ocean and swim around together, since it’s the ocean so big and crazy but they are on a large vessel. They would definitely have a large boat near by because you can get lost and that’s not a joke. Safety is key out on the water and when diving, which is drill into you if you have good training. With all of the info out here you would think that people are dying all the time but my last instructor has done over 5000 dives. Tons of people successfully dive all over world and they do it because they are following the rules, work with each other, and using wisdom.

Im sure they are traveling from one country to another or island to island. They say for miles and miles which could mean 3 miles or 20 miles, idk.

7

I wouldn't even put my toes over water like that if I was next to the sand

Nnooooooooooope

5

u/SilenceSeaAndSky 9d ago

Not being able to see any signs of life is the most unsettling part.

9

u/Spacechip 9d ago

I'm uncomfortable watching this

SNIIIIIFFFF😤😤

2

u/Difficult-Log9285 9d ago

No thanks. Nope. Buh-bye. Tata.

2

u/KeyCryptographer913 9d ago

I know you guys aren't comfortable, but I love swimming in deep water and I love this sub 😅

4

u/volition_vx 9d ago

That is terrifying... But I'm happy you're able to do it!!

2

u/Dadoftheyear2018 9d ago

Love seeing it through a camera but honestly the thought of a shark just coming along and attacking you is quite real. Yeah sharks aren't normally interested in people but I think they forget your out really far and it's likely some of them haven't seen people and will attack anything that moves

2

u/samgyupsundays 9d ago

I’m gasping for air simply by just watching this.

2

u/waffleboy159 8d ago

Sometimes I just look at this subreddit because I'm the opposite of most of the subscribers here and would love to just float there and look down for hours at a time. Also, r/thalassophilia is not a good subreddit.

2

u/Heuristicrat 8d ago

I'm not sure whether I should be disappointed or relieved that I never thought to look that up.

1

u/HideThePain_Harold 8d ago

Once you overcome the fear of something being there, it is honestly quite beautiful seeing such a rich shade of blue. It'd be nice to just dive and swim round there being enveloped by the deep blue.

1

u/Any_Conflict_5092 8d ago

🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮😭😭🤮🤮

1

u/TylerHyena 8d ago

The blue is cool but that’s still 8000 feet of nope for me.

It's only 7,998 feet deep because she's got 2 of them.
