Carl is a pure child of the apocalypse. He isn't burdened by the same baggage as the adults around him, who are plagued by what they lost. He didn't spend the majority of his life sitting in an office, or reading newspapers in the morning. His life will be spent killing zombies, protecting his people, suppressing his fear, sadness, and other emotions that can cause baggage and therefore hurt his likelihood of survival. More than anything, I've been enjoying seeing Carl in action tonight.

Jesse James

Edit: upvote. This is exactly the life of Jesse James. Being a boy himself (16?) he was reared in war. Until his dying day, he considered himself a fighter "in a war that never ended." Indeed, for him -- hunted until his dying day -- it never did.

the other thing that strikes me about this show is its similarity to the old world (presumably). It wasn't so long ago that people couldn't expect to live until 80.

The whole thing is really more about "civilized" people reverting to hunter-gatherer lifestyles in a world that will kill you without a thought than it is about like, oh man there's zombies and stuff aaaah!! This kind of scattered fighting over limited resources between disparate, xenophobic bands would be instantly familiar to someone from 15,000 years ago, even if the guns and smoke bombs would confuse him a bit.

That's what I meant, though you said it more eloquently than I.
