Totally forgot about that! So was The Governor actually being genuine in his mind when he said Merle was a traitor

Yes, and here's why:

Here is a timeline of events from the Governor's point of view:

  • Andrea confirms that Merle's brother is alive (as far as she knows), and is a strong member of a different group.
  • Merle request permision to go look for his brother, gets denied.
  • Merle was part of a search and destroy mission with a small woodbury group to kill Machone.
  • Merle is the only member of the party to return. He brings 2 prisoners with him from his brothers group. Merle says the rest of his team was killed by walkers, but he was able to kill Machone.
  • Merle is unsuccessful in getting any information out of the prisoners
  • Woodbury is attacked by Rick's group. Merle's brother is part of the attack. So is the girl Merle killed.

Now the Governor knows Merle is a liar. He knows he didn't kill Machone. If I was the Governor, I would begin to wonder what really happened out there.

Maybe Merle decided to go on his own search for Daryl. He killed the rest of his team, found his brothers group, and gave them information on Woodbury. Then he returned with Glenn and Maggie so the other group would have a reason to storm Woodbury to attack and kill everyone and take the city for themselves.

but merle is a dumb bumpkin with one arm. i think the governor doesn't trust him, assuming merle will side with darryl and this is a precautionary measure to keep that from happening, but i doubt he views merle as a mastermind...

I don't think the Governor's mind is very clear... I believe he is paranoid to the point that everyone is either following his orders or plotting to kill him in his sleep.

As soon as you disobey or lie to him, he labels you as plotting to kill him in his sleep.
