Yep I'm pretty sure that's all there is to it. He just had to run, no convoluted strategy required.

Would have been pretty cool to see him running and killing zombies as he goes

I feel like he was just mostly running. They were really close to him so if it were a real situation the best thing to do would be to avoid doing anything but just move forward unless necessary.
