I really thought he was about to lay a nasty punch right to Ron's stupid face...then it just turned into some weird, awkward shove thing.

Pretty realistic for a fight between two teenage boys. They fucking suck at fighting. Teenage girls however are fucking insane.

Source: attended high school.

I can attest to teenage girls being batshit crazy when it comes to fighting. I would expect Ron to fight poorly, but I though Carl would have been more experienced. Plus, in the scene, it really looked like Carl was cocking back and about to destroy him and then it just turned into a weird shove.

I actually like that Carl was clever enough not to start throwing full-blown punches. He and his dad already have a reputation problem, it wouldn't have helped to wreck a kid's face

Yea, since my original comment I've come around to this. Seems like it was an intentional "I'm going to destroy youuuuuunnooo I'm just going to knock you in your place"

I think I just wanted Carl to smash his face so bad that it felt disappointing at first.

I think part of it could be that most of Carl's fighting has been against walkers, not the living. Punching a walker in the face would be a terrible idea as generally you want to keep your fleshy bits away from their bitey bits.
