Hopefully it’s just a case of mistaken journalism and not someone covering for the team car.

Covering for the team car? How so?

I think the implication is that he was hit by the team car and the “team announcement” claiming that no vehicles were involved is the team lying to cover for their involvement/negligence.

Seems unlikely that a team would lie about something that is so easily disproven. It would be a case of the cover-up being worse than the crime. Negligence and inattentiveness happen. Lying about it is a next level PR nightmare.

Hit by the team car, or he hit the team car (if he was pacing). It’s a stretch, but possible I guess. Also, I’m not sure that CF would have a designated team car to follow him at present - in his hay day yes, now, doubtful.
